Indian Standard SPECIFICATION FOR

GAS CARTRIDGES FOR USE IN FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

( Second Revision )

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( Second Revision ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 23 September 1985, after the draft finalized by the Fire Fighting Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civii Engineering Division Council.

0.2 Since the capacity of the gas cartridge is less thanWQ ml, the same does not come under the purview of gas cylinder rules. Therefore, a separate Indian Standard has been formulated SO a3 io ensure a high standard of manufacture in the interest of safety since &ese are used in the form of highly pressurized container for operating stored pressure type fire extinguishers in the form of refill.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1968 and revised in 1977. The principal modifications made in this revision are provision of rationalized capacities, modification in the specification for the material based on the indigenous availability and standardizing the fixing arrangement with fire extinguishers.

0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accord- ance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the requirements in respect of material, construction, fixing arrangement, capacities and performance require- ments of gas cartridges used for fire extinguishers.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). 3

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

2.1 The gas cartridge consists of a cylindrical body, an outlet connection with sealing device ( disc or frangible ) according to arrangement shown in Fig. 1.

3. MATERIAL

3.1 The steel used for the body shall satisfy the following properties:

a) Chemical Composition

i) Carbon ii) Silicon

iii) Sulphur

iv) Phosphorus :

v) Manganese :

b) Physical Properties

i) Tensile strength :

ii) Yield stress :

iii) Percentage elongation :

3.2 The outlet connection and the sealing device and other fittings shall either be of non-ferrous metal or of stainless steei according to the requirements given in IS : 3224- 1979’.

4. CONSTRUCTION

4.1 The gas cartridge shall be manufactured from seamless or welded steel tube or by deep drawing from flat plate. The end shall be closed .such that, the minimum material thickness is not less than the thickness of the parallel portion. When welded tubes are used or hole in the bottom is welded, it shall be designed so as to allow higher strength ( see 6.2 ). The general shape of the body and essential dimensions are

given in Fig. 1. The shell of the cylindrical portion shall not vary from the cylinderical form by more than 2 percent of the nominal outside diameter at the point measured. The deparature from circularity shall be gradual. The outlet connection shall be permanently attached to the body after tightening the threaded portion by soldering.

5. CAPACITY AND CONTENTS

5.1 The gas cartridge shall have maximum filling ratio ofO.667, which is the ratio of mass of carbondioxide ( see IS : 307-1966t ) charged in the container to the mass of water required to fill the container at 27°C.

*Specification for valve fittings for compressed gas cylinders excluding liquefied petroleum gas ( LPG ) cylinders ( second revision ).

@pecification for carbon dioxide ( second rcuision ).

The water capacity of the container shall be adequate to fill maximum quantity permissible within the prescribed filling ratio.

6. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

6.1 Each gas cartridge shall be subjected to internal hydraulic pressure of 250 bar for a minimum period of one minute before filling. Any leakage deformation, bulging and permanent stretch exceeding 10 percent shall constitute failure. 6.2 In case of ultimate failure test, it shall be tested in a well protected test rig, subjected to internal proof pressure equal to 550 bars for seamless body and 650 bars for the other types ( see 4.1). The bursting ( structural failure ) shall nqt occur. The pressure shall then be raised until the gas cartridge bursts. The bursting shall not cause fragmentation of the gas cartridge and the main tear shall not be a brittle type, that is, the edges of, the fracture shall not be radial but shall be sloped in relation to the diametral plane.

6.3 Each cartridge shall be subjected to leakage test and for this purpose the cartridge shall be charged and stored in the container mixed with the extinguishing media for 21 days. The cartridge shall not show any sign of internal or external corrosion as well as loss in weight equal to a maximum of 10 percent.

6.3.1 Alternatively the cartridge after being covered by inverted glass/ transparent jar shall be dipped in a suitable water tank filled with water, the level of which is sufficiently higher than height of cartridges for 30 h. There shall not be any collection of even a single bubble on the inside top

of the inverted glass after elapse of 30 h. ( The air bubbles collected in first 6 h shall be neglected. )

6.4 The sealing device shall be so designed that the gas cartridge shall automatically discharge the content if the temperature inside the gas cartridge reaches is 75°C or 90 percent of the minimum pressure mentioned in 6.2 whichever is occurs first ( see 6.2 ).

7. FINISH

7.1 The inside and outside surface shall be smooth and the material section shall be uniform. The external surface shall be properly cleaned and treated with anti-corrosion treatment of lead tin alloy ( tin not less than 10 percent ) or zinc coating with minimum coating thickness of 20 microns.

8. MARKING

8.1 Each cartridge shall be clearly and permanently marked with the following information by embossing or punching, near its neck:

a) Name of the manufacturer or his trade-mark,

b) Type of construction, realing device and capacitry,

c) Gross mass of the charged cartridge,

d) Mass of the empty cartridge, and

e) Year of manufacture.

8.1.1 The cartridge may also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act, and the Rules and Regu- lations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to compIy with the require- ments of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer. IS1 marked products are also continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions, under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, mav be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

9. SAMPLING AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

9.1 Lot - All gas. cartridges of the same type an3 capacity produced by the same manufacturer shall be grouped together to constitute a lot.

9.2 For ascertaining the conformity each lot shall be considered individu- ally for the purpose of evaluation of quality in accordance with this specification.

9.3 The number of samples to be taken from a lot shall depend on the sizes of the lot and shall be according to Table 1 which shall be selected at random from a lot.

The lot shall be considered to be in conformity with this requirement if all the samples pass the relevant requirements.

9.5 In respect of ultimate failure test ( SCG 6.2 ) and sealing disc ( see 6.4 ) the manufacturer shall issue a certificate with the lot to the effect that this test had been performed and found satisfactory in respect of the type of gas cartridge presented in the lot. Alternatively one sample shall be tested from the lot and shall meet the requirements given in this clause in the lot to be considered satisfactory in respect of requirements.

9.6 In the absence of a certificate from a manufacturer that all the component parts and fittings are conforming to the requirement of this specification, from a sample gas cartridge one item each of all the component parts and fittings shall be taken separately and examined individually in respect of the relevant requirements laid down in 3. The

I lot shall be considered satisfactory in respect of component parts and fittings if the sample meets the relevant requirements.
