0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institit-tion on 11 December 1967, after the draft finalized by the Hospital Equip-ment Sectional Committee had been approved by the Consumer ProductsDivision Council.
0.2 The formulation of Indian Standards on hospital equipment has beentaken up at the instance of Advisory Committee for the Developmentof Surgical Instruments, Equipment and Appliances, Government ofIndia.
0.3 This standard is one of a series of Indian Stardards on hospitalfurniture. Other standards in the series are:

0.4 In preparing this standard, assistance has been derived fromB.S. 1895 : 1952 ‘ Specification for metal-framed wheeled screens for usein hospitals ’ published by British Standards Institution.
0.5 In some of the clauses of this standard, reference has been made toIS : 4033* and IS : 4034-t which are under preparation. Until these stan-dards are published, the requirements in such clauses shall be subject toagreement between the concerned parties.
0.6 Suggestions relating to curtains for the screens are given inAppendix A.

0.7 This standard contains a clause 3.1 which calls for agreement betwe&the purchaser and the manufacturer.
0.8 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thi#standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express@&,the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-196W.The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value shouldbe the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard specifies the requirements of metal-framed bedsidescreens used in hospitals and other similar institutions.
2. MATERIAL+4-
2.1 Framework - shall conform to 2.1 of IS : 4033 - 1968
2.2 castors - shall conform to IS : 4034
3. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS
3.1 The framework of the screen shall comprise 3 or 4 panels as requiredby the purchaser, each panel being 610 mm wide in case of4-panel screen;the middle panel being 1 220 mm and the two side panels 610 mm widein case of 3-panel screen.
3.1.1 The tube used for the panels shall have outside diameter 19.05 mmand thickness 0.91 mm.1 525 mm.
The height of the panels shall be approximatelyThe panels shall be mounted on castors attached to tubular
supports or extreme vertical tubes as shown in Fig. 1 and 2, giving anoverall height of 1 675 mm.
4. MANUFACTURE
4.1 Framework -Each panel of the framework shall consist of twostraight tubes and two bends. The framework shall be so constructed thateach panel folds flat on its neighbour. For supporting the curtains, eachpanel shall be fitted with hooks and expanding wires.

4.2 Hinges -Each pair of adjacent panels forming a screen shall beconnected by two hinges or a continuous hinge. In case two hinges areused, these shall provide the following features:

Smooth unrestricted rotation of panels;Parallelism, within a tolerance of 2”, between the adjacent tubesof the hinged panels;A maximum gap of 3 mm between the adjacent tubes of thehinged panels ( preferably no gap ); andSufficiently robust construction to minimize the effects of stressesencountered in normal use, such as those imposed by overturningthe screen or by wheeling the screen along uneven ground.

4.3 Castors -The screen shall be supplied on not less than six castors,50 mm dia. The castors shall be of swivel type, rubber-tread and shallbe so arranged that when the screen is folded, these do not collide andwhen the screen is open, it is stable. 5.1 The finish shall conform to 5 of IS : 4033 -1968’*.
6. MARKING
6.1 The marking shall be as specified in 7 of IS : 4033.1968,.

7.1 The packing shall be as specified in 8 of IS : 4033 -1968*

CURTAINS FOR BEDSIDE SCREENS
A-I. Ko requirements for curtains have been included in this standard asit isconsidered that the choice of material for curtains of the screen shouldrest with the purchaser. It is, however, desirable that the material shouldbe opaque, light in weight, durable and suitable for frequent laundering.
