NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 1275:1995 ‘Double-pitch precision roller chains andsprockets for transmission and conveyors’ issued by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of theTransmission Devices Sectional Committee and approval of the Medical Instruments, General andProduction Engineering Division Council.

The text of the ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standardwithout deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should beread as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard while in IndianStandards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.

CROSS REFERENCES

In the adopted standard reference appears to certain International Standards for which IndianStandards also exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their placeare listed below along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:

DOUBLE-PITCH PRECISION ROLLER CHAINS ANDSPROCKETS FOR TRANSMISSION AND

CONVEYORS-

1 Scope

This International Standard specifies requirements fordouble-pitch precision roller chains suitable for themechanical transmission of power and for conveyors, together with those for their associated sprockets. Itcovers dimensions, tolerances, length measurement, proof testing and minimum tensile strengths.

These double-pitch chains have been derived fromsome of the short-pitch transmission precision rollerchains covered by ISO 606 having certain commondimensions but of double the pitch.

The chains are intended for use under less onerousconditions with respect to speed and power trans-mitted than are the base chains from which they arederived.

2 Normative references

The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisionsof this International Standard. At the time of publi-

cation, the editions indicated were valid. All standardsare subject to revision, and perties to agreementsbased on this International Standard are encouragedto investigate the possibility of applying the most re-cent edhions of the standards indicated below.Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of cur-rently valid International Standards.

3.2 Designation

Double-pitch transmission precision roller chains shallbe designated by the standard ISO chain numbersgiven in table 1. These chain numbers have been ob-tained by taking the ISO chain number for the basechain, given in ISO 606, and addhg the prefix 2.

EXAMPLE 1

ChainISO 1275-2(MB

3.3 Dimensions

Chains shall conform to the dimensions shown in fig-ure 3 and given in table 1. Maximum and minimumdimensions are specified to ensure interchangeabilityof links produced by different makers of chain. Theyrepresent limits for interchangeability, but are not themanufacturing tolerances.

For the purposes of this International Standard, di-mensions for the double-pitch simplex chains only areshown.

3.4 Tensile testing

3.4.1 The minimum tensile strength is that valuewhich shall be exceeded when a tensile force is ap-plied to a sample which is tested to destruction asdefined in 3.4.2. This minimum tensile strength is nota working force. It is intended primarily as acomparative figure between chains of various con-structions. For application information, the manufac-turers or their published data should be consulted.

3.4.2 A tensile force, not less than that specified intable 1, shall be applied slowly to the ends of a chainlength, containing at least five free pitches, by meansof shackles permitting free movement on both sidesof the chain centreline, in the normal plane of articu-lation.

Failure shall be considered to have occurred at thefirst point where increasing extension is no longeraccompanied by increasing force, i.e. the summit ofthe force/extension diagram.

Tests in which failures occur adjacent to the shacklesshall be disregarded.

3.4.3 The tensile test shall be considered a destruc-tive test. Even though a chain may not visibly failwhen subjected to a force equivalent to the minimumtensile strength, it will have been stressed beyond theyield point and will be unfit for service.

3.5 Proof testing

It is recommended that all chains should be prooftested by applying a tensile force equivalent to one-third of the minimum tensile strength given intable 1.

3.6 Length accuracy

Finished chains shall be measured after proof testingbut before lubricating.

The standard length for measurement shall be aminimum of

a) 610 mm for ISO chain numbers 208A to 21OB in-clusive,

b) 1220 mm for ISO chain numbers 212A to 232Binclusive,

and the chain shall terminate with an inner link at eachend.

The chain shall be suppofied throughout its entirelength, and the measuring force given in table 1 shallbe applied.

The measured length shall be the nominal lengthsubject to a tolerance of ‘:15 ‘Yo.

The length accuracy of chains which have to work inparallel shall be within the above limits but matchedby agreement with the manufacturer.

3.7 Marking

The chains shall be marked with the manufacturer’sname or trademark.

It is recommended that the chains should be markedwith the ISO chain number quoted in table 1.

4 Conveyor chains

4.1 General

Except where otherwise stated, the shapes, dimen-sions and test details for the chain and sprockets shallconform to clauses 3 and 5, respectively, substitutingreference to table 2 in place of table 1 where appro-priate.

It is usual for chains used for conveyor purposes tohave straight-edged (not waisted) side plates. Ad-

ditionally, an alternative large roller of diameter d, maybe adopted. These features are ,illustrated in figure 4.

4.2 Nomenclature

The nomenclature of figure 2 is also applicable toconveyor chains. Figures 2 and 4 do not define theactual form of the chain plates.

Figure 4 — Conveyorchainwith largerollers

4.3 Designation

Double-pitch precision roller chains suitable for con-veyor purposes are designated additionally with theprefix C when the straight-edged chain plates(figure 4) are used, and with a suffix L when the al-ternative large size roller (d7) k adopted. Whennecessary for the purpose of distinguishing betweenthe chain roller sizes adopted, an optional suffix S maybe applied to chains with the small roller.

4.4 Dimensions

When the large roller size is adopted, dimension d,shall be replaced by d, in wheel formulae. Dimensionsshall be in accordance with table 2.

4.5 Length accuracy

The length of plain chain shall be the nominal length‘0”5 ‘%0.subject to the tolerance o

The length of the chain with attachments shall be thenominal length subject to the tolerance ~$~~ ?10.

4.6 Marking

The chains shall be marked with the manufacturer’sname or trademark. It is recommended that thechains should be marked with the ISO chain numberquoted in table 2.

4.7 Attachments

4.7.1 General

Except when otherwise stated, the dimensions andtest details for the chain with attachments shall con-form to clause 3.

4.7.2 Designation

Two types of attachment are given, with the commondimensional basis .as given in table 3; their designationand distinguishing features are as follows:

K1: with one attachment hole centrally located ineach platform,

K2: with two attachment holes longitudinally lo-cated,

as shown in figure 5.

4.7.3 Dimensions

Attachments shall conform to the dimensions givenin table 3.

4.7.4 Manufacture

The actual form of the K attachment plates is left tothe discretion of the manufacturer, but the attach-ments are normally of integral construction, wherebythe chain plates are extended and bent over to makethe platform, as shown in figure 5.

The length of the attachment plate is also left to thediscretion of the manufacturer, but it should be suf-ficient to accommodate the attachment holeslongitudinally in the case of type K2, and not interferewith the working of the adjoining links. A commonlength is normally adopted for both types KI and K2.

4.7.5 Marking

The marking shall be the same as would be shownon the chain plates replaced by an integral con-struction attachment.

5.2.2.4 Measurement over pins (Seefi9ure7)

For an even rwmber of teeth:

MR = d + dR min.

For an odd number of teeth and single-cut sprockets:

&fR= d COS90”~ + dR min.

For an odd number of teeth and double-cut sprockets:

oMR=dcos~ + dfl min.

The measurement over pins of sprockets with aneven number of teeth shall be carried out over pinsinserted in opposite tooth gaps.

The measurement over pins of sprockets with an oddnumber of teeth shall be carried out over pins in thetooth gaps most nearly opposite.

The limits of tolerance for measurement over pins areidentical to those for the corresponding root diam-eters.

NOTE 1 Sprockets for double-pitch chains may be pro-vided with either one set of teeth having a number of teethequal to z or with two sets of teeth, the locationof the toothspaces of the second set being midway between those ofthe first. In this case, the total number of teeth of thewheels will be z, = 22.

In the case of a single set of teeth, z will be an integer. Inthe case of double-cut sprockets, z, will be an integer, butz will be fractional if z, is an odd number.

Short-pitchbase chains should not be used with double-cutsprockets made for extended-pitch chains and viceversa

It should be noted that ~ max. and ~ min. can beapplied arbitrarily both to the minimum and maximumtooth gap forms, subject to the limitations imposedby the cutter on the maximum diameter.

To facilitate the construction of the tooth gap form toa large scale on a drawing board, the tooth heightabove the pitch polygon can be obtained from thefollowing formulae:

( )~ max. =p 0,3125 + ~ - 0,5dT

( )~ min. =p 0,25 + ~ - 0,5d1

Note that ~ max. is related to ~ max. and & min. tod, min.

5.2.3 Tooth gapform

The actual tooth gap form which is provided by cuttingor by an equivalent method shall have tooth flanks ofa form lying within the minimum and maximum flankradii and blending smoothly with the roller seatingcurve subtending the respective angles.

5.3 Radialrun-out

Radial run-out, measured on one complete turn of thesprocket, with reference to the bore and root diame-ter, shall not exceed a total indicator reading greaterthan the larger of the two following values:

0,000 ~ + 0,08 mm, or 0,15 mm, up to a maxi-mum of 0,76 mm.

5.4 Axialrun-out (wobble)

Axial run-out, measured on one complete turn of thesprocket with reference to the bore and the flat partof the side face of the teeth, shall not exceed a totalindicator reading of

0,000 ~ + 0,08 mm, up to a maximum of1,14 mm.

For fabricated (welded) sprockets, a minimum of0,25 mm may be accepted if the above formula givessmaller values.

5.5 Pfichacouracyof sprocketteeth

Pitch accuracy of sprocket teeth is important andchain manufacturers should be consulted for details.

5.6 Preferredrangeof teeth

This International Standard primarily applies to a rangeof teeth from 5 to 75 inclusive (with interrndatenumbers of teeth 5 1/2 to 74 1/2 inclusive).

The preferred range of numbers of teeth is 7, 9, 10,11, 13, 19, 27, 38 and 57.
