FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Agricultural Tractors and Power Tillers Sectional Committee, had been approved by the Food and Agriculture Division Council.

With the increasing emphasis on safety and comfort of the operators and bystanders, efforts are being made to reduce the noise level from agricultural tractors to an acceptable limit. Accordingly, at the ftrst instance the methodology for measuring the noise level has been specified in IS 12180 : 1987 ‘ Method for noise determination of agricultural tractors ‘. In order to guide the manufacturers regard- ing the workmanship of the silencers a need was felt to prepare this standard.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised )‘. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

4 CONSTRUCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Weld Specifications

Spot/Electric resistance weldmg performed on the silencer ‘will be acceptable if it meets the requirements given in 4.1.1 to 4.1.4.

4.1.1 The first and last spot weld of any group of spot welds shall not be defective.

4.1.2 A mimmum of 70 percent satisfactory, a maximum of 20 percent undersize and a maxi- mum of 10 percent defective welds shall be acceptable.

4.1.2.1 Satisfactory weld

A spot weld where the average diameter of fused nudget or pulled button equal to or greater than the value given in co1 A of Table 1.

4.1.2.2 Undersize weld

A spot weld where the average diameter of fused nudgets or pulled button is equal to or greater than the value shown in co1 B of Table 1 but smaller than the value given in co1 A of Table 1.

4.1.2.3 Defective weld

A spot weld where the average diameter of fused nudgets or pulled button is smaller than the value given in co1 B of Table 1.

4.1.2.4 A missing weld in a spot welds pattern shall also be considered as a ‘ Defective ’ weld.

4.1.2.5 Welds that are less than 50 percent or more than 150 percent of the design spacing as shown on product assembly drawings shall be considered as defective welds.

4.1.3 Contacting overlaps of sheet metals on joints while spot welding shall not be less than as given in Table 2.

4.2 Finish

4.2.1 Silicon Paint

Silencer shall be painted with silicon paint having heat stable black pigments suitable for h gh temperature applications. Paint thickness after baking or air drying shall be between 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm.

4.2.2 Vitreous Enamel

Silencer shall be coated with black vitreous enamel and the average thickness of this coating shall be between 0.35 to O-45 mm.

4.2.3 Silencer paint shall meet the requirements specified in 5.4.

5 SILENCER PERFORMANCE TESTS

5.1 General Requirements

5.1.1 Normal ambient air temperature during testing shall be 27 f 7°C.

5.1.2 )Atmospheric pressure shall not be less than 96.6 kPa.

5.1.3 Stable operating conditions shall have been attained before beginning the test measurements.

5.1.4 If an exhaust gas discharge device for test area is used, it shall not change the engine performance. For this free air circulation in the test chamber is to be ensured so as to simulate the working conditions of tractor as closely as possible.

5.2 Leakage Test

Muffler assembly shall not leak more than the declared value when subjected to an internal air pressure of 10.0 kPa. When the internal air pressure of 19 kPa is reached the air supply to exhaust silencers shall be shut off. The fall in pressure in the exhaust silencers shall not exceed 1 kPa after a period of 30 minutes.

5.3 Weld Pull Test

Spot welds shall pull a button equal in diameter to two times the thickness of the sheet welded. The number of weld required to pull metal shall be as follows.

5.3.1

a)

b)

Bafle to Shell

Four spot welds shall pull a button per baffle. Spot welds shall pull one button per quadrant formed by the major and minor axis of the oval.

5.3.2 Other Components

One spot weld per joint shall pull a button.

5.4 Paint Performance Test

A minimum of 72 hours after painting shall be allowed before carrying out the tests specified in 5.4.1 to 5.4.4.

5.4.1 Adhesion Test

It shall not show any signs of chipping or flaking.

5.4.2 Impact Resistance Test ( Vitreoas Enamel )

Silencer shall be subjected to an impact of 1.4 Nm and the paint shall be able to withstand this impact without showing any sign of peeling or flaking [ see IS 101 ( Part S/Set 3 ) : 1988 ] and also be subjected to scratch hardness test as given in IS 101 ( Part S/Set 3 ) : 1988.

5.4.3 Salt Spray Resistance Test

5.4.3.1 Aluminium coated steel

White corrosion products shall not be there after a minimum of 24 h of testing steel and after a minimum of 96 h of testing it shall not have rusted though white corrosion products are permitted after 96 h of testing. In areas where the aluminium coating has been destroyed in fabrication, for example welded areas, rust resistance for a minimum of 24 h of testing is permissible.

5.4.3.2 Non-coated steel

It shall not rust after a minimum of 24 h of testing.

5.4.4 Heat Resistance Test

It shall neither peel, blister nor any sign&ant surface deterioration shall occur after the following test.

Remove a 75.0 mm x 150.0 mm sample from the component and place it in a suitable furnace at a temperature less than 200°C and heat to commensurate with the maximum respective engine exhaust gas temperature, hold it at this temperature for 3 h an.d then allow it to cool down to room temperature.

Standard Mark The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian

Stanahis Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BJS for con- formity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details,of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
