( IS0 Title: Textile Machinery and Accessories --Knitting Machines - Classification and Vocabulary )
Uational Foreword
This Indian Standard, which is identical with IS0 7839-l 984 ‘Textile machinery and accessories - (nitting machines - Classification and vocabulary’, issued by the International Organization for standardization t IS0 ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on the recommendation of the (nitting Machinery Sectional Committee and approval of the Textile Division Council.
Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they shall be read 3s ‘Indian Standard’.

1 Scope and field of application
This International Standard establishes a classification and list of equivalent terms in English, French and Russian, for knitting machines used in the textile industry. This International Standard applies to knitting machines in which fabric is formed by intermeshing of loops of yarn. It does not cover stitch forming machines used for-reinforcement of basic fabrics, already present in a sheet-like form, by intermeshing loops or stitches.

Definition
weft knitting mdchine : A machine
producing a knitted fabric by in-
termeshing of loops formed suc-
cessively across the width of the
fabric from a yarn fed substantially
crosswise to the lerigth of fabric.
warp khitting machine: A
machine in which the fabric forma-
tion occurs by interlacement of loops
formed simultaneously across the full
width of the fabric from a system of
yarns which are fed to the needles
substantially in the direction of the
length of fabric.
other loop forming and combined
technique machines : Machines
that form the fabric by the technique
of intermeshing of yarn loops but
which cannot be defined either as
weft or as warp knitting machines.
needles
independent needles : Needles
which can slide in the needle bed
and be moved individirally during the
stitch forming process.

can only be moved in unison during
the stitch forming process.
needle carrier: A part of the knit-
ting machine containing indepen-
dently moved needles in a needle
bed or united needles in a needle
bar. The needle carrier may be flat or
circular, cylindrical or dial-type.
face type
The basic type of construction of
fabrics produced on the respective
knitting machines.
single face fabric : Knitted on one
row of needles.
double face fabric : Knitted on two
rows of needles.
