Hello PBL Members
Irrawang Public School Community are safe, responsible learners who
show respect in all settings
Sometimes our emotions and our reactions can force us to intentionally
harm others or leave a supervised area, making it unsafe for us.
Controlling our actions and emotions is an important tool in making sure
we do not physically harm others and that we remain safe. Our Aussie
5 rule “I can control what I do and say” reminds us to respect others but
also ourselves.
At times routines are suddenly changed or there may be a change of
personnel. As safe, responsible learners we need to respect these chang-
es. For some, especially children, coping with change is hard, resulting
in making poor choices. We all need to learn how to cope with changes
by making the right choice.

Library News
Congratulations to our fantastic Gold and Platinum Premier’s Reading Challenge award winners! These students have been successful in gaining their PRC certificate for 4 consecutive years to
achieve Gold, and for 7 years in a row to achieve Platinum … that’s every year including kindergarten!!!
What a glorious achievement! If they continue for just a couple more when at high school, they
will receive a very special medal. Now that’s something to aim for!
Scholastic Bookclub orders are due back next week. Thank you to everyone who supports our school Library by ordering from Bookclub.
I recently read about some new research conducted by Macquarie University in Sydney. Their early childhood lecturer, Dr Colliver, said that parents are often pressured to buy pricey apps
and educational toys thinking these things will boost their child’s brain power. Her work with 4 year olds found that children were more interested in what the adults around them were
doing; that they learn how the world works by watching and copying the people around them. The research suggests less time on the apps in favour of engaging children in regular household
chores. So here are a few things you can do to improve your child’s literacy and numeracy.
1. Write a letter or postcard …. e.g., to Nanna who lives in another town just to say hello, or a special one to Santa.
2. Make a shopping list …. This helps with problem solving, thinking about what food needs to be bought and in what quantities.
3. Set the table …. Think about how many people are eating. Will we need just forks , or knives too?
4. Cook …. How much food will people eat? What if an extra person is staying for dinner? 5. Send an email …. Talk about what you are writing, how you are spelling the words and sound
them out as you go. 6. Sort out the laundry …. Helps children identify patterns. 7. Stack the dishwasher … Helps with grouping items such as round bowls and flat plates.
The Library is now closed for the two last weeks of the year. This gives time to do stocktaking exercises and other administrative tasks that are required to maintain our Library in an efficiently organised state. Thank you for the return of lots of overdue books. Please continue searching for those still “hiding”. Thank you.
Happy reading everyone! Chris Berry, Teacher Librarian

Canteen Volunteers Needed
Providing nutritious food in our canteen is a vital step in helping kids set up healthy routines and habits for life. Our canteen is run with the help of a network of volunteers from our school community working together. If you can spare any time to join our network and help prepare and serve food at our canteen, we would very much appreciate a hand. Its easy and fun work with On-the-job training and you can dedicate as much or as little time as you like. Our time is from 8:15am-12.30pm if you are available. All volunteers’ efforts are rewarded with a healthy lunch and as much tea and coffee as you can drink. Just fill in the volunteers slip below and email or send it back to school. If you have any queries please feel free to contact me via phone, email or drop in to the canteen for a chat. Many thanks, Phyllipa Elvidge Canteen Supervisor 49872403 [email protected] ______________________________________________________________________________________________
