PASTORAL LETTER

Dear Fellow Traveller

A well-known metaphor is to consider the spiritual life as a journey and, in fact Christianity was originally known as the Way. The metaphor has leaked into other areas of life. For example, contestants on reality shows like Strictly often describe their time on the show, and the subsequent transformation that takes place, as “a journey”.

While covering a considerable number of miles on the motorway over Christmas, I had time to ponder how

elements of motorway driving have things to teach and remind us about the spiritual life: both its challenges and its joys.

For example, the process of joining the motorway can be just like joining a new group or church. The inside lane can be clear of traffic and a smooth integration is achieved; or the lane can be busy enough to require the grace and kindness of someone already there to welcome you into the lane; or maybe it’s just so busy that you have to push your way in; or you arrive at the point of merger as one lorry is overtaking another and you just run out of slip road, this is a very uncomfortable and vulnerable moment! All these things can happen when we start something new: it can be very easy, or it can be really hard work and a bit scary. But when we have made up our minds to get to our chosen destination, we find a way of coping with the beginning. And equally it’s important for those of us, already on the motorway, to remember that sometimes someone new needs us to be kind and gracious to welcome them in.

There is a great sense of freedom and openness when the motorway is quiet and flowing freely: your journey proceeds unimpeded. The miles fly by, the music gets turned up , the singing becomes more flamboyant (in the privacy of my car, I really can do all the harmonies on Bohemian Rhapsody!). This is similar to when our spiritual life is going well, we feel close to God and God feels close to us. We feel in the flow of life and peak experiences abound. These times are to be treasured and stored in our hearts so they can encourage us when things are more challenging.

On the motorway, challenges can include the traffic slowing or, even more annoyingly, coming to a complete stop. Sometimes the gantry signs helpfully explain why: other times it remains a mystery. We can get stuck behind a lorry, which is frustrating because maybe they are going a little slower than you’d like, or maybe the frustration is because you don’t have a clear view of what is ahead. All these challenges can happen in our spiritual lives.

Sometimes it does feel like things have stalled or slowed down and we just don’t know why. Other times we can’t see what is ahead. Patience and resilience are required at these times: both on the motorway and in our spiritual lives.

There are as many reasons for travelling on the motorway as there are people. Sometimes those reasons are mundane and routine, and at other times they are highly charged, exciting and life changing. Some people are even travelling in the opposite direction to us! This mirrors the reasons that people become aware of their spiritual journey. We are all so different and how we become aware of our relationship with God is unique to our life circumstances and events. Can we push the metaphor further by considering the different vehicles we travel in as representing our different life circumstances?

Driving often provides me much needed time to pray. Physically being between points A and B, often creates a spiritual in between-ness, a liminal space where awareness of God is heightened for me. A time to think and reflect.

What is common to all our journeys is that they have a beginning, a middle and an end. As do our lives: the reality is that we are travelling from birth to death. But travelling the motorway of life isn’t just about moving between those points, the journey itself can be enjoyed, cherished and savoured, as well being frustrating, heart breaking and challenging. An awareness of our spiritual nature, of God in our lives, enriches and deepens our life experiences so that the travelling becomes all the more meaningful.

Happy and Safe Travelling to you all!

Jacky

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love for us revealed in your Son, Jesus Christ. You call us to make your love known to others in this parish and neighbourhood. Help each of us to respond to this challenge and as visits are

made, go before us, show us how to best use our opportunities, help us to speak a word in season, and in all we say and do, may we commend our Lord and further

his kingdom, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Would anyone like to join the team?

ASTON ROWANT FAMILY SERVICE

Every first Sunday of the month at 10am, Aston Rowant church has a family service.  This is children focussed with a breakfast to start, held in the side isle served at tables.  A short service is held after breakfast around the tables.  Max and Molly, our puppets help with the service.  We have a different theme each month.   The service is designed for all ages.

Sunday 2nd February - we will look at the story of the baby Jesus being taken to the Temple by His parents where the prophet Simeon says He is the light of the world.  Everyone has a candle to celebrate.

Sunday 1st March - we will concentrate on pancakes since Shove Tuesday is that week.  Needless to say, there will be pancakes for breakfast, amongst other things.

For further information, contact either Des or Brian

SOUL SPACE

Why not come to Soul Space on the 3rd Saturday of each month? A time of quiet, music and prayer in the beautiful church of

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Crowell.

This month’s Soul Space is on 15th February at 5.30pm

+++++++++++++++++++

We all want quiet. We all want beauty …. We all need space.

Unless we have it, we cannot reach that sense of quiet in which whispers of better things come to us gently.

Ash Wednesday26th February 2020

Services 11am St Andrew’s7pm St Andrew’s

After the pancakes of Shrove Tuesday comes Ash Wednesday!Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and it is the Church’s invitation to you to observe Lent and prepare for Easter. Traditionally Lent practices include prayer, fasting and self-denial, alongside reading and meditating on God’s holy word. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the placing of repentance ashes on the foreheads of participants. This is not a mark of holiness but a reminder that we are all in need of God’s grace, love and forgiveness. Do join us at either 11.00am or 7.00pm at St Andrew’s Church, Chinnor on Ash Wednesday when the Imposition of Ashes will be incorporated within both these services of Holy Communion.

Lent Appeal 2020 – Yeldall Manor

I hope you will want to join with the Mission Committee in supporting our exciting Lent Appeal for 2020, which is for a very inspiring organisation. I first came across the work of Yeldall Manor (near Reading) when Des and I lived in the neighbouring community of Twyford. In Yeldall’s own words:

“For over 40 years, Yeldall Manor have been helping men to overcome serious drug or alcohol addictions and return to society to live new lives, drug, alcohol and crime free. We believe that recovery is possible and that recovery is not just abstinence. It involves learning to live comfortably as a sober, productive member of the community. It involves learning how to work, develop personal relationships, strengthen family ties, and enjoy positive leisure activities – all without the need for drugs or alcohol. We are a Christian organisation and all our staff and volunteers have a Christian faith. We believe that the best means of achieving true freedom is through a relationship with Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.” Yeldall’s programme not only includes residential rehabilitation but also a comprehensive programme of support to rehouse and reintegrate men into their local community. Amongst future plans they hope to extend parts of their service to women, whose need is often as great.

Both Des and I have heard moving testimonies from men whose lives have been “turned around” by Yeldall, and who have found a firm faith in Jesus through the programme. We are privileged, on Sunday 23rd February to be able to share their stories, when Yeldall Manor “graduates” will speak at our Sunday service at Chinnor (they may have a second person who can speak at Aston – tbc).

We will also be holding a Bring and Share meal at the home of Rosemary Carter, Chapels End, Sydenham Rd, Sydenham OX30 4NE at 7 p.m. on Saturday 7th March as part of the Appeal - we will be asking for donations this year and a food contribution. Please do support this event – those who have attended our events in the past two years have enjoyed a really good evening, with lots of fellowship and chat. Please let me know if you would like to attend.

Look out for more details on your noticeboards and in next month’s magazine.

Lent CourseThis year’s Lent course will use the film The Greatest Showman as the basis of our discussions.

During Lent, the group will run at Crowell, on each Wednesday of Lent between 2.30-4pm.

If there is enough interest, we will also run an evening group. Please let us know if you are interested in attending either session – it won’t mean you have to come, but it will help our planning if we have a rough idea of numbers.

Please contact either:The Rev’d Jacky 07769 825 305 or email

The Greatest Showman is the 2018 Golden Globe-nominated movie starring Hugh Jackman, about the founder and stars of the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

It is ideal for a Lenten study of the Christian themes of hope, redemption and new life. The five-week course offers discussion points, biblical reflections and prayers based on short excerpts from the film.

PLEASE NOTE: The film will be shown in its entirety on Sunday 1st March at St Peter and St Paul’s in Aston Rowant at 2.30pm.Everyone is welcome, even if you are not going to come to the Lent Course, just bring your own popcorn (and some for Jacky!)

A UNITED ALTERNATIVE MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE

3.00pm on Sunday 22nd MarchThe Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Crowell

This service focuses on the people who have been unable to have children of their own or who have lost their own children. For those who have adopted children. For those who have lost their own mother’s or have had difficult maternal relationships

to overcome.

A gentle service that contains hymns, prayer, readings and reflection followed by a time of lamentation during which music is played. The stones given at the beginning of the service to hold are taken to the altar, at this time, and placed into a basket at the foot of the cross. A symbol of handing over any unhappy burdens to the Lord.

Following an affirmation of faith, each person is anointed with perfumed oil (if they wish).

The service ends with a hymn and a blessing.

Do come and join us for this service at The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Crowell

The aim of the courses is to increase both the accuracy and frequency of butterfly and moth recording in the Upper Thames Region. It is hoped attendees will consider helping with butterfly transects in the three counties, either on BBOWT reserves or elsewhere in the three counties such as your own sites. The local Butterfly Conservation Branch and BBOWT co-ordinate over 60 butterfly monitoring transects and are always on the lookout for new volunteers. If you would like to attend one of these days please email [email protected] – all places are free and open to non-members of UTB/BC but are subject to availability. Field Studies Council courses Most of us know which tree is which in summer, but how about learning to do it in winter? Without their leaves and flowers, identifying deciduous trees in winter can be very challenging, but once you understand what to look for, it all becomes quite accessible. If all the winter trees look the same to you, then come on this course, where we will look closely at features of buds and twigs, using a hand lens, in order to identify the more common species, even when they are winter-bare. We will be working from the FSC AIDGAP: Winter tree identification guide, a copy of which will be provided, and which is yours to keep (RRP £7.00). This is a practical, hands-on course which is suitable for complete beginners: dress warmly, as we will be working outside for part of the day, no matter what the weather!

Please bring a packed lunch with you.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER*“Rise! Take your mat and walk”

Women, men and children of all ages are called to join the day of prayer that takes place all around the world on Friday 6th March 2020.

World Day of prayer is a women led, global, ecumenical movement and the service this year has been prepared by Christian women in Zimbabwe. They encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. They encourage us to ‘Rise, take your mat and walk’ with them as they continue their, often turbulent, journey towards full reconciliation.

World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. The preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans. Finally, at a church near you on Friday 6th March 2020, people will gather to celebrate the service prepared the women of Zimbabwe.

The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world…. through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in American Samoa more than 36 hours later.

Everyone is welcome so please come and join us

on Friday 6th March

at St Andrews Church, Church Road at 10.30am and again at 7.30pm.

and please stay afterwards for refreshments and a chat; we look forward to seeing you.

Within this service we are asked to commit to supporting our community with actions of love, peace and reconciliation. Then on Friday 20th March there will be a World Day of Prayer coffee morning between 10.30am-12noon at St Andrews church when we invite you to drop in and spend time with us in prayer and reflection as we “Revisit our commitments”.

Chinnor Passion Play Correspondence Address:

54 The AvenueChinnor

Oxon OX39 4PE07957813104

In 2017 Chinnor embarked on a Passion Play at which approx. 700 people heard and saw the Gospel over 2 performances. Mill Lane School and St Andrew’s School were both involved and dancers from the youth of Chinnor Community Church opened the play. Actors, backstage crew, musicians and many more worked together to ensure that the play was performed to a high standard. We are, under the Lord’s direction planning to do this again next year on 25th April 2020. I am writing to you as we need help. The following are areas where your people’s help would be valued and most needed.

1. Prayer Support – to pray for all the planning, people involved, and most importantly that those who ‘see’ and ‘hear’ the Gospel will respond positively to it.

2. People Support – both in attendance and participation. People who will act (no experience required, but a desire to be involved), musicians, back-stage crew and much more. We are looking for those who want to be part of this remarkable event to contact us.

3. Financial Support – It goes without saying that it costs to put on such an event and details can be found about financial support on the web site.

4. Publicity – Could we please ask if you would make this known via your website and/or face-book pages.

We would like as many people as possible to be involved, to get the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ out to Chinnor. Photographs are attached and a leaflet about the next one. If you need more’ of anything’ please do let me know.

REinspired with Year 5, St Andrew’s CofE Primary School

The theme of January’s REinspired session at St. Andrew’s primary school was Faith In Action – providing an opportunity to share a relaxed and interactive afternoon with the Year 5’s (ages 9/10). Volunteers from The Children’s Society, Fair Trade and Hearing Dogs represented these important charities, along with Chinnor Churches Go Wild! The children were attentive and engaged with the social issues discussed and asked thoughtful and challenging questions. Jo and Lauretta shared on a ‘mind map’ some of the things we do, creation care, caring for the environment and helping to preserve local habitats in our churchyards. We can announce the arrival of hedgehog nesting boxes, thanks to A Rocha funding - to be used in Chinnor and at Aston Rowant Church.  Also, local caretaker and craftsman Terry Castle has kindly made some sturdy and attractive Swift nesting boxes, which can be obtained from us, for a donation, and attached under a roof, so long as there is an overhang. Our next meeting is at St. Andrew’s Church at 4pm on Monday 3rd February, to which you are welcome if you’d like to find out more or get involved. Jo Whitfield

ChooseDay Church Christingle

On a dark January afternoon, Chooseday Church children and adults took part in a beautiful Christingle service. A lovely coming together for our first session back of the New Year. Thanks to Barbara, our local Children’s Society representative, for coming to talk about the origins of the tradition and bringing along her giant Christingle. Margaret for leading and John for playing the piano for us. A magical and atmospheric start to the new term.

TEA WITH THE BISHOP

Sunday 6th January saw Bishop Colin, Bishop of Dorchester, visit Aston Rowant for an evening communion service.  The event started with tea and cakes with lots of chance for the whole parish to meet the Bishop and chat with friends.

It was lovely to see the church so full, the choirs from the other churches helped our singing and the Bishop preached on inclusivity.  Bishop Colin said it was lovely to see the kitchen and meeting area being used so effectively; he reminded us that seven years ago he had dedicated the space.

Many thanks to all involved for their time in preparing teas and delicious cakes, not forgetting the bell-ringers and the many ‘behind the scenes’ helpers.
