A Prayer to St. Jude

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church

honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hope. Please intercede on my

behalf. Make use of that particular privilege given to you to bring hope, comfort

and help where they are needed most.

Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and

help of heaven as I work with my challenges, particularly

(here make your request). I praise God with you and all the saints forever.

I promise, blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor

you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to

you.

Amen.

Bells

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands!

Psalm 100: 1, RSV

Bells, within the context of the Church, are meant to be a reminder for prayer.

St. Paulinus, bishop of Nola, introduced small hand bells to the early missionaries

as a means to call the monks to prayer. In the 7

th

century, bells were approved by

Pope Sabinianus for use in the monasteries.

By the 13

th

century, outdoor tower bells were rung at the Sanctus during Mass.

This alerted those outside the church that the Consecration was taking place.

Eventually, a small set of hand bells replaced the tower bells for the Sanctus. The

altar server rang these during the elevation of the Eucharist at the consecration.

The Angelus originated in the 11

th

century as an evening bell to call the monks to

pray 3 Hail Marys and to meditate on the Incarnation. The devotion expanded,

with the bell being rung for the prayers in the evening, in the morning and finally at

midday. It was not long before parish churches followed the monasteries in ringing

bells at 6AM, 12 noon and 6PM. The faithful in the area would stop and pray

either the Angelus prayer or 3 Our Fathers.

In 1964, Pope Paul VI prayed the Angelus publicly each week at St. Peter’s,

followed by a short homily. Subsequent popes have continued this devotion.

Today, we can still hear many church bells throughout cities calling parishioners

to prayer and to Mass. Several churches still ring the bells at 6AM, 12 noon and

6PM for the Angelus, and many use the Sanctus bells during Mass.

Lord, as we hear the church bells, may we become more aware of your presence

in the world. There are people who receive Communion every morning and carry

you out to others. There are those who hear your Word and share it with others.

Let the bells be a reminder for us to go and do the same…to pray and to preach

and to be your example to the people we encounter.

STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship Prayer (The Ascension of the Lord) “I am praying for them…

” JOHN 17: 9 Prayer is the foundation of our Faith and the foundation of

Stewardship. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first and best

option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and family and for

those that don’t treat you very well. Pray to give praise, to thank and to ask God

for help. Pray to see what God wants you to do with the gifts He has given you.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

It is so strange that some people believe that they

are not going to see or experience God until they die!

Don’t we hear the echo of Jesus:

“I am with you always to the end of the world!”

Fr. Bob Colaresi, O. Carm.

THIS IS OUR FAITH

The Sacred Environment

From the Latin word votum, meaning “a wish or a vow,” votive candles are

normally long votives or pillar candles placed near a statue of a saint. These

candles stay lit until they burn out completely. Candles have always played a

significant role in the Liturgy and prayer of Christians. In the beginning, before the

4

th

century, candles were lit in the catacombs. After Constantine’s recognition of

the Church, candles served an even more grand role, being placed around the

altar. The progression of lighting a candle in honor of or petition to a saint became

a more common practice.

Prayer candles are used in the private prayer and petitions of an individual. We

can trust the saint we appeal to will carry our petitions and prayers to the altar of

God. Having the flames stay lit until it burns out completely is symbolic of prayer

and sacrifice.

“And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated

on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures

and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp,

and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.”

As I Sees It

My Deer Parishionerz of St. Padre Pio Parish,

It iz me! Batman, da rectory doggo. Since I iz only 2 years old, dere are tings dat I

haz never seen. I haz never seen my dog bowl not get refilled. I haz never seen

a doggo dat actz lik a catz or a catz act lik a doggo. I haz never seen foodz dat I

did not wantz 2 eatz. But in da life of our local Church in da Diocese of Camden,

dere haz never been a time dat the feast of da Ascension haz been moved 2 a

Sunday. Deez r strange times indeed! But just becauz tings r different doesn't

mean dat da message of da Ascension iz not da same. In da Ascension, Jesus,

both fully human and fully divine, carriez all of humanity wit Him, now freed from

da chainz of sin and death. It iz a reunion of joy, da reunion of God da Father and

His creation, us 4 da first time since da disobedience o Adam and Eve and from

da beginning of da world. Becauz of dis joy, da Holy Spirit comes into da world

and da Church and da work of evangelization begins wit all of us. So even dough

it iz not da normal day for da Ascension, da effects of da Ascension are still 2 be

experienced and lived. So how can we prepare 4 da coming of da Holy Spirit in

our lives? How can we prepare ourselz 2 spread da Gospel and da message of

da Resurrection? How can we make sure dat Batman doesn't run out of treatz? [I

don't know how dat last one got in dere ;) ]

May we celebrate da Ascension as da Easter season gets ready 2 come 2 a

close!

Be nice 2 ur petz and take dem 4 lotz of walkies (unless dey r catz. Catz don't go

4 walkies)!

Prayer for Priests

Father,

You have appointed your Son Jesus Christ eternal High Priest.

Guide those He has chosen to be ministers of word and sacrament and help

them to be faithful in fulfilling the ministry they have received.

Grant this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns

with you, and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Amen

O Jesus, through the immaculate heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers,
