Irony-a contrast between what is expected

and what actually happens

Verbal Irony

what is said is

different than what is

meant(Sarcasm)

Situational Irony

something that

happens that we

wouldn’t expect to

happen

Dramatic Irony

the reader knows

something that the

characters do not

Page 3: Irony pp

Example:

Someone says…

“This locker room smells great!”(The locker room really smells like

sweaty socks)

Someone says…

“Break a Leg!”(They really mean good luck)

Page 4: Irony pp

Example:

A fire station burning down.

You would not expect a fire station

to burn down.

A marriage counselor files for

divorce.

You would not expect a marriage

counselor to file for divorce.

(humor)

Dramatic Irony

the reader knows

something that the

characters do not

Examples…

•Two people are engaged to be

married but the audience knows

that the man is planning to run

away with another woman.

•In a scary movie, the character

walks into a house and the

audience knows the killer is in the

house.

(Suspense)

We know Juliet has married Romeo.

The Capulets and Paris do not.

This an example of dramatic irony.

Page 32: Irony pp

Romeo’s attempt to establish peace

between Mercutio and Tybalt leads

to Mercutio’s death.

This is an example of situational irony because

the reader expects the fighting to end

with Romeo’s attempts but instead it

causes death and more violence.

Page 33: Irony pp

The nurse weeps (for Tybalt), but at fist she

never openly states who she is weeping for.

Juliet misinterprets her and thinks that Romeo

has been killed (its actually Tybalt).

This is an example dramatic irony because we

as an audience know who has died and who

the nurse weeps for but the character Juliet

does not.

Page 34: Irony pp

After Romeo kills Tybalt and is

banished, Juliet tells her mother

how she wishes she could go to

Romeo that evening.

This is an example of verbal irony

because her mom thinks Juliet

wants to find Romeo and kill him.
