System Recommendations
The Iron Comp software is not platform specific. It is designed to run on all operating systems that support FileMaker.
From a hardware perspective, it is recommended that you have a laptop or computer with the following features;
Processor: I7 or I5, at typical speeds are sufficient to run the system
Graphics: Important, Full HD (1920 X 1080) or better
Screen: laptop – 15 or 17 inch recommended
Operating System: Windows 10 or OS X
This will ensure optimum performance of the software and the best screen resolution when projecting on a screen
during the meet.
Before the Meet Starts
Initial Startup of Iron Comp If you get any error message when opening Iron Comp, do not just ignore it. Connect the computer to the internet.
Close Iron Comp and reopen. It should then download any additional required components. Failure to resolve this issue
will disable the ability to export meet results to Excel or Word at the end of the meet.
Setting Up Your Printer Go to ‘Print Options’ and select ‘Print Setup’.
This will open the ‘Print Setup’ window. Select the page orientation
(either Portrait or Landscape) and then ‘OK’.

If other information is available, such as rack heights, these fields may be imported in a similar fashion. It is not
recommended to import 1st attempts as these should be written in pencil on the cards due to frequent changes.
4
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Here is an example of a spreadsheet formatted for upload. Please note if someone is entering multiple events or doing
crossover for comp class, you will need to include both values in the cell. The values will need to entered as multiple
rows in the cell. To enter multiple rows within an Excel cell: After entering the first event, hit the alt key and the enter
key to create a new row.
Save the file when you are done formatting. We recommend you save the file to indicate the data is before weigh‐in.
Example – File name “TestMeetFile_BeforeWeighIn”.
Importing Data for Weigh‐in and Scorecards Once you have a spreadsheet prepared, you are ready to import the data. You will need to import the pre‐weigh‐in data
to create scorecards. Open the Iron Comp folder and go to Iron Comp. Double click to open the program.
5
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
This will open the application. You will open in run meet mode and see data from the previous meet.
To load your weigh‐in data, you will need to go to the ‘Before
Session Start’ tab. Select ‘Enter weigh‐in data’.
This will bring you
to the screen
where you enter
weigh‐in data. You
will need to clear
the data from the
previous meet
before importing
new data.
6
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
To clear previous meet data, go to ‘Weigh‐in Files’ and select ‘Save this weigh‐in and empty file’. The system will always
prompt you to save a file before emptying data.
You will be asked to create a
name for your saved file and
then ‘Save’. If you are deleting
old data and do not wish to
save a copy, select ‘Cancel’
rather than ‘Save’.
If you have selected ‘Cancel’, you will receive the following message.
Select ‘Continue’.
7
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
This will remove the old
data from the system. You
will now be ready to
import new data to create
your scorecards and enter
weigh‐in data.
To import the new data, go to ‘Weigh‐in Files’
and select ‘Import Weigh‐in Data’.
This will open a window asking you to

This will open a window for you to match the fields on your spreadsheet to the files in the system. You will see below
that not all fields are a match. You will need to match the fields before importing the data. To start the process, select
‘matching names’ from the drop down.
9
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
You can see in the example below, ‘T‐Shirt Size’ is not correctly matched. To fix this you will need to place your mouse
over the double triangles and drag the ‘T_shirt_size’ field on the right to match the one on the left.
10
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Once you have matched the fields, you will need to click the line between the fields to change it to an arrow. The arrow
indicates that the field will be imported into the system.
11
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Once all the fields are correctly matched, select ‘Add new
records’. Make sure ‘Don’t import first record (contains
field names)’ is selected so the system does not import
the titles of your columns on the spreadsheet. Select
‘Import’.
This will import your data into the system and let you
know if any fields were skipped due to data formatting
errors in the Excel file. If errors are indicated, the
offending data must be found and corrected before
proceeding.
Go to ‘View Layout #1’ to review the data and look for
missing fields.
12
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
In this example, the Comp Class is missing for John Smith. You can add this information here, or change it on your
upload spreadsheet and then reload it. Remember if you want to reimport, you will need to remove the existing data.
Jr has been added as the correct Comp Class for John Smith.
Once you have a clean import, you will see the data in the form where you can enter ‘Weigh‐in Data’.
13
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Medal Count and Best Lifter Categories This feature will give an estimate on how many medals and Best lifter awards you will need for the meet. Keep in mind
this is just an estimate and can change if people miss their registered weight class at weigh‐ins. It is always
recommended to order a few extra medals.
To run Medal Count and Best Lifter
Categories, go to Weigh‐in Data,
and select Medal Count and
Bestlifter Categories.
This will give you the estimated total for medals and your Best Lifter awards. The Best Lifter categories are listed at the
bottom. In the example below you would need Best Lifter awards for Women’s Open Raw Full Power and Men’s Open
Raw Full Power.
14

Preview Scorecards
We recommend you take a look at the scorecards before printing or saving them to a file. To do this, go to Weigh‐in
Data and select ‘Preview Scorecards’.
This will open the scorecards for you to review. For our test file, we have 9 lifters. You can review records by using the
arrows on the left side of the screen to review the cards, or by using the ‘Find’ function on the right.
15
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
If you select ‘Find’, this will allow you to enter a search term in any of the boxes.
Printing Scorecards
After importing and reviewing your data, you will be ready to print scorecards. Go to ‘Print Options’ and select ‘Print
Scorecards’.
16
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
This will create scorecards for you. The default sorting will be sorting by Name which is useful at the weigh‐in. If you
would prefer to have your scorecards sorted differently (by Flight for example), you will need to change the sorting. To
change sorting, select ‘Clear All’.
You will then need to select how you want the
scorecards sorted. Find the field you want to sort by and
then select ‘Move’. This will move the field to the ‘Sort
Order’. After adding fields to the ‘Sort Order’, you may
rearrange the fields by dragging to the desired location.
17
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Once you have selected your ‘Sort Order’ fields,
select ‘Sort’.
This will open an option to print your scorecards.
Select the printer you want to use for printing. It is
recommended to print to a PDF file first and then print
the PDF file. The printed area of printers varies which
can cause a printer to print only one scorecard per
page. Printing the PDF file allows one to scale the
output to the printed area ensuring two scorecards per
page.

Entering Weigh‐in Data
After weigh‐in and equipment check is completed, you will need to enter the weigh‐in data into Iron Comp. To do this,
go to ‘Enter Weigh‐in Data’.
This will open up a screen where you will enter in weigh‐in data. You will enter the lifter’s body weight (Kilos) measured
during the weigh‐in, opening attempts for each lift, squat rack set, bench rack set, and whether any of the opening
attempts are record attempts. Areas where you will enter data are highlighted in green and blue below. The green
highlights will need to be entered for each lifter. You will only enter information in the blue highlighted areas if the
opener is a record attempt. Other data should be checked against the card to ensure no changes are warranted from the
weigh‐in.
19
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
See the example below for Michael Miller. His weight at weigh‐in was 98.4 kilos. His opening attempts are 137.5 for
squat, 110.0 for bench, and 150.0 for DL. All attempts are entered in kilos. His squat set is 15 and his bench set is 15‐9.
If one of Michael’s opening attempts is a record attempt, you would select the appropriate record flag from the drop
down.
Record Label Definition
S State records
N National or American record
W World or International record
20
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Once you have entered all the weigh‐in data, you should perform a final data check. The final data check identifies
anyone that has missing data. Iron Comp will check to confirm every lifter has an event, comp class, and equipment
class selected and that their age matches their comp class.
To run this, select ‘Weigh‐in Data’ and then ‘Make
final data checks’. If discrepancies are found at
any step, the process pauses. To continue to the
next check, you must select ‘continue’. The screen
will indicate checks are complete after the last
check.
After you have confirmed weigh‐in data entry is
complete, you will need to save a file with the
weigh‐in data. This will provide you with a backup
in the event you accidentally delete data or need to
reload. To do this select ‘Weigh‐in Files’ and then
‘Save this weigh‐in as….”.
21
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
This will open a window where you will name your file and decide where to save it. We recommend you save the weigh‐
in data with the meet name and designate it is the file after weigh‐in. Example: TestFile_AfterWeighin. Select ‘Save’
once you have finishing naming your file.
Separating Lifter Data for Multiple Platforms When running a two platform meet, one copy of Iron Comp is required for each platform. Because all lifters in a session
generally attend the same weigh‐in, the data for multiple platforms will need to be split at the end of weigh‐ins and
transferred to the respective computers on each platform.
This example is for a session that has a ‘Red’ platform and a ‘Blue’ platform. To accomplish the sharing of data, copy the
‘both platform after weigh‐in’ file to a thumb drive for transport. The second computer operator should use the thumb
drive to load Iron Comp with the same data as the first computer. When done properly, both computer will now have
the weigh‐in data window loaded with identical data for both platforms. Select ‘layout 1’.
22
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Then select ‘Find’ in the grey menu bar. The Red platform should enter ‘Blue’ in the platform field while the Blue
platform should enter ‘Red’. The ‘Delete found data’ option should now be selected from the enter weigh‐in data menu
on both computers. This will leave the Red data for the Red platform and the Blue data for the Blue platform. Both
computers are now ready to load their meet data.
Separating Lifter Data for Multiple Day Meets
23
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Separating the data for multi‐day meets works in the same way. In this example the meet has two days, Saturday,
1/4/2020, and Sunday, 1/5/2020. Data for both days is loaded in Iron Comp. To remove the data for Sunday’s lifters,
select Go to Layout/Layout #1. You will see data for both Saturday and Sunday. Select ‘Find’.
Enter the date for Sunday, 1/5/2020.
This will give you records for Sunday, 1/5/2020. Select ‘Delete Found Records’ to remove Sunday’s lifters.
Save a copy of the file with just Saturday’s lifters. Example ‐ TestMeetSatBeforeWeighin
24
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
When you are ready to enter weigh‐ins for Sunday’s lifters, you will need to follow the same process. Load the full file,
Go to Layout/Layout #1, search for Saturday’s date, and Delete Found Records. You will then have a file for Sunday’s
lifters.
Loading Meet Data
Once the weigh‐in data is entered and verified, you are ready to load data to run the meet.
To do this select ‘Weigh‐in Files’ and then ‘Return to
Meet Window’.
This will bring you to the screen where the meet is run. You will see the data from the previous meet in the system. You
will need to load your weigh‐in data in preparation for running a new meet.
25
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
To do this select ‘Before Session Start’ and then
‘Load a new Session’.
A window will open asking you to enter a password.
26
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Enter ‘why me’ as the password. It is all lowercase and select
‘Yes’.
\
The system will ask if you want to save a copy of the current data. If
so, choose the location to save, give the file a name, and select ‘Save’.
If you do not need to save a copy, select ‘Cancel’.
If you are not saving a copy, you will receive the message below.
Select ‘Continue’.
Iron Comp will then create your new meet session with your weigh‐in data. It will open to show the details of the first
lifter on the top of the screen and the other lifters in order below.

Use the flight and logo1 fields to identify the corresponding logos to be displayed. To insert a new logo into the logo1
field, right click in the logo1 field. This will display ‘Insert logo’. Select ‘Insert logo’. Find the desired logo file in the
directory where it is stored. Double click the new logo to complete selection. Close the logo window when finished.
31
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Managing Available Plates
Prior to the start of the meet, you will need to tell the software what you have for available plates. This will allow the
software to correctly display the loading information for your spotter/loaders.
Go to ‘Before Session Start’ and select ‘Manage Plates Available’.
This will open a window for you to specify the plates you
have available for use during the meet.
You will enter the number of plates available in the ‘NUM‐
PLA’ column. In the example below, the meet director has
only 12 Red plates available.
32
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Once you have entered your available plates, select
‘Continue’. The software will take a few moments to
refresh. This is normal.
Confirming Bar/Collar Weight
To confirm the Bar/Collar weight, scroll to the right in the top section. You will see the bar/collar for squat is set at 25
kilos. This is where you would change the bar/collar weight if using a 30 kilo squat bar/collar set. If using a 30 kilo squat
bar/collar, the system will automatically switch back to a 25 kilo bar/collar for bench and deadlifts. A short delay will be
experienced while the system recalculates the load chart for the lighter set up.
To return to the Run Meet view, go to ‘Run Meet’ and then select ‘Main Meet Windows’.
Incorrect Plate Load If you are ready to start the meet and see an incorrect plate load, please reference the “Managing Plates Available”
section of this instruction manual and confirm the plates are correct.
33

Running the Meet
Entering Attempt Results You will enter the result after each lift on the top section of the screen. Select ‘Good Lift’ for successful attempts and
‘No Lift’ for unsuccessful attempts. Caution: Do not double click when selecting ‘No Lift’ or ‘Good Lift’. If you double
click, the selected result will also be applied to the on‐deck lifter.
Once you have entered the lift status, the screen will advance to the next lifter. In this example, Meredith was
successful in her attempt and Jennifer is the next lifter. You will now see Jennifer’s data on the top of the screen and on
the bottom window of the screen, you will see Meredith is now at the bottom of the flight with ‘9999’ in the Weight
column. This is where you will enter Meredith’s next attempt once you receive it from the expeditor. You will also see
her first squat on the right side of the screen. Successful lifts will show in green with an S before the weight.
Unsuccessful lifts will show in red with an 'U' before the weight.
34
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Upon receiving the next attempt from the expeditor, enter the next attempt weight in the cell where ‘9999’ shows. In
the example, Meredith’s next attempt is 70.0 kilos. You will see her Total and Wilks score show at the right of the
screen.
Follow the same process for each lifter.
35
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
As each lifter completes their final squat, the lifters will move to the very bottom of the screen after the remaining squat
flights. You will see BP1 next to the lifter name. Their next attempt weight will show their opening bench attempt.
Changing Bench Press or Deadlift Openers, Rack Heights, or Record Flags Find the lifter of interest in the bottom window and select a field in their row.
36
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
After you select the lifter, go to ‘Run Meet’, and then select
the option to Change Bench Press Opener/Rack Height or
Change Deadlift Opener. The option will open a window for
you to make the change.
Select ‘OK’ after making the change to save.
Correcting a Changed Call
If a lift was recorded incorrectly or the referees change the call, you will need to update this in the results. To do this,
find your lifter in the list at the bottom and go to the attempt on the right side of the screen that needs correction. In
this example Jeni Creary’s second benchpress lift was recorded incorrectly.
37
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Click in the cell with the incorrect lift. In this example we are changing the unsuccessful lift at 70 kilos to a successful lift
at 70 kilos. To do this, you will change the ‘U’ next to the kilo amount (70) to an ‘S’.
Jeni’s lift is now showing a successful lift in the results.
Repeating a Lift and Awarding an Attempt at the End of the Flight
If a lifter needs to repeat a lift at the end of the flight, you will need to change the next attempt and next attempt
weights to set this up. Find your lifter at the bottom of the screen and go to the next attempt shown for the lifter that
will be taking the re‐attempt. In this example, Seth will be given a second attempt at his second benchpress. You will
see that Seth’s record is already showing his third benchpress attempt (BP3) as his next lift.
To give Seth a new attempt, you will click in the BP3 cell and change this back to BP2. In the next attempt weight cell
enter the correct kilo weight preceded by a ‘9’ as the weight to keep him at the end of the flight.
38
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
You will need to erase the ‘9’ when the lifter reaches the upper window.
Passing an Attempt
If a lifter decides to pass the next attempt, you will need to record this in the system. To do this, find your lifter in the
list at the bottom, select a field in their row, and then go to ‘Run Meet’. Select ‘Pass Selected Attempt. This will record
an unsuccessful attempt with no weight to that lifter for the indicated attempt.
39
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
A passed attempt is shown below.
Removing a Lifter from the Meet If a lifter bombs and does not wish to continue as a guest lifter or a lifter needs to be withdrawn from the meet due to
injury or other pressing concern, find the lifter of interest in the bottom window and select a field in their row.
Go to ‘Run Meet’. Choose ‘Selected lifter bombs or withdraws’. This will
assign an unsuccessful attempt with no weight to that lifter for all their
remaining attempts. A lifter should not be deleted if they started the meet.
Awarding a 4th Attempt If a lifter needs to be granted a 4th attempt to break a record, you will need to make a modification to allow this. In the
example below, Alexis Diaz was successful on his 3rd attempt and will need a 4th attempt on the National Record.
Find your lifter in the bottom section. You will see the system already has the opening benchpress weight for Alexis.
40
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
Click in the cell with BP1 and enter SQ4. This will give Alexis a 4th squat attempt. Next enter the kilo weight of his 4th
attempt. 225 kilos is used in this example. You will then need to select the appropriate record flag.
This will bring Alexis back up to the current flight for his 4th attempt.
If you are using a squat bar with bar/collar weight of 30kg, the system will automatically calculate back to 25kg after
your last lifter. You will receive the ‘Speno 4th Attempt Warning’. This will notify you to change the bar/collars back to
30kg if you have a 4th attempt.
Correcting When Wrong Lifter Took Lift
If a lifter goes out of order, you will need to make changes to correct the results and bring the next lifter to the top of
the screen. In this example, Meredith lifted out of order and successfully completed a deadlift at 80 kilos. You will see
41
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
this lift is showing as Jennifer’s lift. To bring Jennifer back to the top of the screen, you will enter in DL1 with her
requested weight of 75 and remove the S 75 from the results. This will bring her to the top of the screen as the next
lifter.
You will need to correct Meredith’s record. If she decides to keep the successful attempt at the wrong weight of 75
kilos, enter S 75 in the results for DL1. If she elects to take a new attempt at her original weight, enter DL1 and put a 9 in
front of the attempt weight. Example – the Lifter will do 75 kilos for the attempt. Enter 975. This will place the lifter at
the end of the flight for the retake of DL1. You will need to remove the 9 from her attempt weight when she reaches to
top window.
42

Adding a Lifter
If you need to add a lifter after the meet data is loaded, go to ‘Run Meet’ and select ‘Add One Lifter’.
43
USPA Confidential & Proprietary‐version 3.0 ©Iron Comp 2020
This will open a screen for you to enter the lifter information. Hit ‘Return’ after entering all information and your new
lifter will be added.
Deleting a Lifter
If you need to delete a lifter, find your lifter in the list on the bottom of the screen. Go to ‘Run Meet’ and select ‘Delete
Single Selected Lifter’. This should be used when a lifter is not at the meet. In cases where a lifter starts, but fails to
finish, such as bombing out or withdrawing due to injury, use the withdraws option in the run meet menu.

Drug Testing
Meet Directors have the option of testing only those candidates that are displayed in the list generated from the Iron
Comp Software under Drug Testing>Mandatory Tests, or selecting candidates from both the Mandatory Tests and the
Optional Tests, in which case you will substitute the athlete with the lowest Wilks score shown on the Mandatory Tests
report with the athlete showing the highest Wilks score shown on the Optional Tests report.
To generate your list, go to Drug Tested and select Mandatory Tests or Option Tests to generate a list. You will also need
to add the lifters who were drug tested to your meet results.
