  • IRISH CONCRETE SOCIETY

INTRODUCTIONOn behalf of the Irish Concrete Society, I am delighted to welcome you to our 35th Awards evening and to the publication of the illustrated catalogue of entries to this year’s celebration of excellence in design and construction in concrete, the 35th Irish Concrete Society Awards Competition.

The Irish Concrete Society was established in 1973 to promote excellence in concrete design and construction. We do this, in part, by offering industry formal education, technical seminars, technical guidance/support and by offering recognition of achievements through our awards scheme.

Each year, the Society recognises the contribution that our third level institutions make to education and research in Concrete Technology. The Annual Student Award, which commemorates the late Professor Seán de Courcy, an inspirational lecturer of engineering at UCD and former chairman of the Irish Concrete Society, will be presented this evening to a student for the most impressive research project at Master’s degree level.

The main awards comprise three categories, from which one overall winner is selected. These categories are: Building, Infrastructural, and Elemental. The winners of the Building and Infrastructural categories are eligible to enter the biennial European Concrete Society Network Awards. Again this year, we have our special International Award category, now in its 5th year. Sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, this award is made in recognition of the vital contribution that our export sector makes to the creation and support of employment in the Concrete Industry.

While the industry has come through some turbulent times, there are now positive signs that the construction industry has stabilised and that employment opportunities are opening up for those at all levels throughout the design and construction chain. While we welcome new people into our industry we must not lose sight that achieving excellence requires a workforce with skill and knowledge.

Last year we announced a major training initiative that the Society was preparing called the Concrete Ticket. The “Concrete Ticket” course, aimed at the level of concrete operative is the first of its kind on this island to address the well recognised requirement for a qualification for site operatives. The course provides essential information on ordering, handling, curing and finishing, to name but a few skills and needs.

Those who are successful in the test receive a photo base id card which is valid for 5 years. Since its introduction in November 2016, over 120 people have taken the course in various locations throughout the country and we have had a successful launch in February last with Damien English, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Renewal. With the Fundamentals of Concrete Technology course, designed for supervisors, and the Concrete Ticket, designed for operatives, the Society now has a formal education programme that we believe will help secure the technical skill within our industry. The official launch of this was earlier this year and was a great success.

On behalf of the Council of the Society, I wish to thank the jury members who gave up their time voluntarily to adjudicate:-

The main awards jury - Frank Lee, Peter Dudley, Eden Keane,The international Award - Ken Aherne, Joe Kennedy, Robert Geraghty,The student award - Robert Laird, Gerry Donnelly and Pauraic Matthews.

The Society acknowledges the support of our members and persons for this evening’s event which we are holding here in Croke Park. The new location is an acknowledgement both of the success of the Society and its award’s evening and of the increased confidence in the industry after many lean and difficult years.

I congratulate all the entrants in the various categories and acknowledge their inspiration, creativity and ability to bring together the skills necessary to deliver excellence in the art and science of Concrete Technology. The Society salutes the leadership and pioneering approach of all involved, Clients, Designers, Contractors, Specialist Suppliers and Sub-Contractors in setting high standards for others to follow.

I thank you for your continued support and I wish you all a most enjoyable evening.

    Jim Mansfield Chartered EngineerChairman

    Main Awards

The Irish Concrete Society will again make an award for excellence in design or construction of a completed building, structure or concrete element, irrespective of type, scale or complexity, in concrete.

The Award Scheme is organised to enable the Society to acknowledge construction achievements in which concrete, in any form contributes significantly to the built environment. Entries relating to the contribution made by concrete to any aspect of building, civil engineering, architecture, art or landscaping will be accepted by the Society.

Entries are subdivided into three categories:

    • Building

    • Infrastructure

    • Element (Housing or small projects e.g. walls, stairs, paving)

There will be one overall winner chosen, with category winners in the other sections, depending on the level and quality of entries.

    International Award

The jury will judge entries on the basis of the following criteria:

    • Technical excellence in the use of concrete displayed by the Irish entrant company

    • The entry should represent a significant achievement for the Irish entrant company illustrating ambition in both business and technical aspects.

    • Marks will be awarded for the use or development of an innovative solution to overcome a technical challenge.
