Introduction by the Dutch Ambassador
It gives me great pleasure to welcome again representatives from the Dutch Agrofood industries to Iran. There is no doubt that now that part of the sanctions have been withdrawn, the Iranian market provides for ample opportunities in agriculture, horticulture and the food industries. While developing the market and getting into partnerships, you can build on already good existing historical trade and investment relations. Even when sanctions were in place, many in agriculture found ways to keep cooperating with Iranian partners.
The Iranian market, with its 77 million inhabitants, should provide for good opportunities. They want to improve their lives and are willing to pay for quality produce. The government will invest in the agricultural industry and in food innovations as part of the diversification of the economy and a strengthening of existing structures.
As a starting point: the Iranian food industry is well developed, and technical expertise is on a high level. Not in the least because educational levels in Iran are high and many people that you will encounter have studied at good technical and agricultural institutes, amongst others in the Netherlands.
Nonetheless, many parts of the Iranian economy still have to adapt to the new situation. The financial sector for example has been outside the international structures for a long time. It will take some time before all transactions will run smoothly again. Moreover, the Iranian government wants to build local production. This will no doubt lead to some protectionist calls.

But that provides for opportunities too, particularly for industries from a country like the Netherlands that are famous for integrated supply chain innovations and technologies.
Iran and the Netherlands share almost 400 years of bilateral relations. New partnerships can build on this. While you are active on the Iranian market, the Dutch government is willing to be part of your business development. My Embassy’s door is always open, and RVO, Atradius, and others provide for a range of financial and non-financial tools.
We hope this visit will further enhance the business ties between Iran and the Netherlands as well as personal Iranian – Dutch relations. Food is an essential part of people’s lives and a building bloc in partnerships. It is no coincidence that in business and in diplomacy, many good deals are reached over quality lunches and dinners. I wish you, the FME, and the NAFTC, all the best with your endeavors in Iran!

and Iran Food+Bev Tec fair, from 29 May to 2 June 2016 in
Teheran. Iam proud to present to you this delegation which
consists of many reputable global players as well as small and
medium sizes entrepreurs. Regardless of their size and
experience, all delegates have in common that they are
convinced of the great potential of the Iranian market and their
eagerness to engage in local partnerships. Therefore, the
Topsector Agri & Food has declared this trade mission as a
Strategic Trade Fair delegation and has provided financial

Expectations are that a few decades from now a formidable
proportion of the world’s population will be living in urban
conglomerates. Most of the new citizens left the country side
and farming for jobs in industry and services. We witness the
process in Europe. Iran is not likely to be an exception. In fact
everywhere in the world the urban setting is expanding rapidly
at the expense of its rural surroundings and generates fierce
competition for land. The growing number of consumers with
purchasing power, the rapid urbanization and the related
changing food habits offer a wide range of opportunities for
cooperation for the entire agriculture sector. A country with
such a potential due to its young and educated population, its
vast natural resources and access to a large consumer-market.

NAFTCThe Netherlands is one of the world’s leading countries in agriculture, horticulture, food processing and agro/food technology. Agricultural trade is one of the pillars of the Dutch economy. Our leading position needs a strong public/private network to maintain our 2nd position worldwide in agriculture exports. “Agro and Food” has been designated one of nine top priority sectors by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
China, India, Turkey and Vietnam are some of the most important agriculture production and food processing countries in the world. To tap the opportunities in these markets the former Ministry of Agriculture and GMV (the Dutch sector association for manufacturers of equipment for food processing, packaging and bio based systems) set up a public/private Netherlands Agro & Food Technology Centre in China in 2008. The China office has been copied in India (2011), Vietnam (2014) and Turkey (2016). The NAFTC offices fulfil the need for support of Dutch agro/food chain companies who are interested or active in the Chinese, Indian, Turkish or Vietnamese/SE Asian market, and the need for a local representative office of the Dutch agro-food & technology-related industry.

Sectors
The offices cover several sectors of the agro & food supply chain, offering an integrated approach for doing and developing business in China, India and Vietnam. Within the NAFTC, on demand of the members several sector centres are or will be established to facilitate specific clusters of companies and organize activities in the specific countries. There will be a special focus on the following sectors:

The strength of the local NAFTC offices is based on a joint commitment and Holland branding, as well as on offering an integrated chain approach in close co-operation with other Dutch initiatives and the Agriculture Department of the Embassy.
Membership
Interested Dutch companies and knowledge institutes can become ‘member’ of the Centre, and use the offices’ services. The offices support and promote businesses both individually and collectively. Membership is open to all Dutch or Netherlands-based/affiliated companies in the total food and agro-supply chain.
