President’s Message Tom Lepic, IQHRA President

With the 2012 Quarter Horse season behind us, we can all take a deep breath and reflect on the great accomplishments

of the IQHRA and Prairie Meadows. This was a season like no other. In the 27 days of racing we averaged 8.3 horses per

race and had a record 2,060 horses leave the gates at Prairie Meadows. This included another new record of 249

Quarter Horse races run during the 2012 season. Furthermore, Iowa-Bred horses won 22 open company races and 5

open company stakes as compared to 13 and 3 in 2011.

Our meet concluded with a very exciting Iowa Bred Championship night and the Bank of America Challenge

Championships. I want to express my sincere thank you to both the IQHRA and also Prairie Meadows for putting on what

both the AQHA and Track Magazine are calling one of the greatest weekends in the history of the American Quarter

Horse Association.

Furthermore, I want to thank Brenda Onstot for her tremendous work with AQHA and the success of this year’s National

Youth Days Experience, which was hosted during the championship week/weekend. Also, big thanks to Wyetta Hammer

and Polly Lepic, who teamed up and hosted a wonderful bus tour of the Des Moines Art Center, Downtown Sculpture

Gardens, and Botanical Center. This tour was sponsored by five IQHRA members: Chris and John Hovey, Bob and Sandy

Brown, Butch Bain, Butch and Wyetta Hammer, and Tom and Polly Lepic.

Looking to 2013, Quarter Horse racing at Prairie Meadows has never looked brighter. New owners and trainers from all

over the country are already making plans to attend our meet. The 2013 meet itself has been approved by the IRGC.

Opening night will be Saturday, August 17. The meet will last 9 weeks with Championship Night ending our season on

Saturday, October 12th. Our stakes races and purse structure will be announced early in 2013.

The Iowa-Bred program looks like it is going to continue to grow quickly. In 2012 we had an increase of Iowa-Bred foals

by nearly 34%. We know of over 30 mares, purchased at the Fall Mixed Sale at Heritage Place, that will be calling Iowa

their home. We are seeing a real increase in the value of owning and breeding Iowa-Breds. Again, a big Thank You to the

IQHRA and Prairie Meadows for everything they have done in the past few years to make this possible!

Finally, don’t forget our IQHRA Annual Membership Meeting and Stallion Service Auction on January 5th at the Ramada

Tropics Resort & Conference Center at 5000 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines, Iowa. With over 160 stallions, this will be

the largest and best stallion auction ever held in Iowa and maybe the entire country. Make your plans early so you don’t

miss this great event! The auction will start promptly at 10:00 AM.

Thanks again to the board and officers of the IQHRA for your continued hard work. I am proud to be your President!

Have a wonderful holiday season. See you in 2013!

Tom Lepic

Fourth Time The Charm For

Rylees Boy In Championship

Challenge

Prairie Meadows Shines In National Spotlight …

Challenge Championships Produce Betting Record

On Final Night Of Season

Local Campaigners Heroes Heart And Senor Fish

Also Win On October 27!

By Dan Johnson, Prairie Meadows Staff Writer

The 20th career victory for the accomplished veteran Rylees Boy was one of the sweetest for owner

Lorena Velazquez Rodriguez.

The 7-year-old won the $353,500 Bank of America Championship Challenge at Prairie Meadows, a

prize that had eluded him the previous three years. He left Rodriguez shaking in the winner's circle as she

talked about winning the Challenge after Rylees Boy had finished 2nd

the past two years and 3rd

in 2009.

"It's a great feeling. I'm really nervous," Rodriguez said through an interpreter. "I had a lot of faith in him

and how he was coming into this race. I knew he was ready. He's a great horse. Any place he goes, he will

try his best."

The Championship Challenge was the headline race of the Bank of America Challenge Championships, a

series of six quarter horse races worth more than $1 million combined.

It was the first national racing event held at Prairie Meadows and it drew record betting for a quarter

horse program, with $98,859 wagered on-track and $459,362 bet nationwide.

The night was capped by Rylees Boy adding another chapter to his storied career that had a humble

beginning. Rodriguez's family purchased Rylees Boy for $8,000 in 2009, and he not only became a

stakes winner, but evolved into the champion aged gelding of 2011. He won for the 20th time in 42 career

starts October 27 and the $161,000 winner's share pushed his career earnings to $946,166.

Llano Teller, the 6-5 favorite, broke fastest in the Championship Challenge, but Rylees Boy closed

strongly on the outside to win by a half-length under jockey Ramon Sanchez. He paid $8.40 to win.

In the other Challenge Championship races on the final night of live racing for 2012:

* All About Larry continued his dominance in distance races by setting a track record for 870 yards in

the $125,000 Red Cell Distance Challenge.

It was the seventh win in nine starts in races 870 yards or longer for All About Larry and his third track

record. He was much the best once again, pulling away in the stretch to win by an easy 5 1/4 lengths in

44.581 seconds.

Owner Diane Heath figured out All About Larry's future almost from the day he was born in 2007.

"It's always been a dream of mine to win an 870," Heath said. "And when this horse came out, he was

just a long-legged horse. I went, ‘O.K., I think this might be the 870 horse for me.'”

"He was too gangly and not mature at all as a 2-year-old. I thought, ‘I'm saving him until he's 3’ And

when he started coming on as a 4-year-old, we knew.'" But even Heath said she never envisioned All

About Larry turning into a champion distance horse. “It's beyond my wildest dreams, it really is," she

said. "I never anticipated to be here."

* Fredaville, the even-money favorite, won the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge for fillies and mares.

It was her third win in seven starts this year, and all three wins centered around the Distaff Challenge.

She won both the Remington and Los Alamitos regional Distaff Challenges before taking the finals.

Breaking from the outside post in the nine-horse field, she finished strongly to win by three-quarters of a

length for her 11th win in 35 career starts. Fredaville was ridden by G.R. Carter, who won his 10th

Challenge race, a record among jockeys.

* Ultimate Wave was the most inexperienced colt in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge, but also

the fastest. Making just his fifth career start, he streaked to his third straight win as the 6-5 favorite.

"From 2-year-old to 3-year-old, he just woke up and matured so much, it was amazing," trainer Jorge

Miranda said. "When we started working him as a 3-year-old, that's when he started coming around.

Mentally-wise, he matured. He was like a big kid as a 2-year-old." His time of 19.563 seconds for 400

yards was just off Spit Curl Diva's track record of 19.450.

* Heroes Heart rewarded owner Todd Horton's persistence by winning the $150,000 John Deere

Juvenile Challenge for 2-year-olds under leading rider Stormy Smith. Horton's Snow Burn won the

2008 Distaff Challenge, but his stable went into a slump, going 1-for-26 in 2010-11.

"It was unbelievable," Horton said. "Then there's nights like this that make it all worth it." Heroes Heart,

who won the Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge to qualify for the finals, ended her successful season by

reeling off wins in her last three starts.

* Senor Fish won a three-horse photo finish from JA Sundance and Zoomfection in the $75,000 Pfizer

Starter Allowance Challenge. It was his sixth win in eight starts in 2012.

IQHRA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING OCTOBER 13, 2012

Board members absent: Ken Denning, Mark Guy, Butch Wessels

The meeting was called to order by President Tom Lepic

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The September minutes were reviewed. Motion to

approve the minutes made by Butch Hammer, seconded by Butch Bain. Motion carried.

APPROVAL OF TREASURER’S REPORT: The treasurer’s report was reviewed.

Motion to approve made by Jim Harvey, seconded by Butch Bain. Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS: 2012 MEET UPDATE: The board is invited to an appreciation

dinner Thursday, October 25th

hosted by Prairie Meadows.

The association will be changing the mailing address in 2013 to Chris Hovey’s home

address in order to receive and respond to mail in a more timely fashion.

This year there have been the most quarter horse racing opportunities ever at Prairie

Meadows. The purses declined because of the number of races per day. The IRGC has

stipulated according to Iowa law that an IA-bred race must be written for the night of the

27th

, (Challenge night). Tom has met with the racing office and they have written a

stakes race for 2YOs that evening which meets the requirements.

Jill Paxton has received numerous calls from out of state owners interested in purchasing

IA-bred yearlings to race here in 2013. Rules pertaining to Ia. bred foals were reviewed.

Any surrogate mare must be in Iowa and in the Department of Agriculture program by

December 1. Mares carrying foals must be in Iowa and in the Department of Agriculture

program by December 31.

FALL SALE: The 2012 Fall Sale netted a profit of $5,021.89. 5 yearlings were

withdrawn before the sale, and 2 yearlings were sold to new owners. The ITBOA is

exploring the possibility of combining their sale with ours in 2013. Butch Hammer also

discussed the possibility of an IQHA sale during their Fall show and having a “race

horse” section. The board then discussed at length having a Fall Sale Futurity conjunction

with future Fall Sales. Motion to discontinue the Fall Sale Futurity after the 2013 year

made by John Lawless, seconded by Shirley Peiffer. Bob Urich voted to retain the Sale

Futurity and Butch Hammer abstained from voting. Motion carried. The current money

($37,500) designated for that futurity will be discussed at a later board meeting.

Page 15: IQHRA December 2012 Newsletter

YOUTH DAYS: Brenda has been busy coordinating the AQHA Challenge Youth

Experience with Prairie Meadows. The dates for IQHRA Youth Days 2013 will be

August 23-24. This change will hopefully alleviate some of the school conflicts

experienced this year.

2013 ELECTIONS: Request for 2013 board resume letters have been mailed to all

members. Ballots will be mailed out in November to members eligible to vote.

CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND: Tom and Brenda discussed the

schedule for the AQHA meetings and the special events planned for Friday and Saturday

nights, including a “headless horseman”, Raccoon River Riders drill team, and “Miss

Teen Rodeo Iowa” to present the colors during the National Anthem. AQHA is impressed

that the number of horses and races continues to improve at Prairie Meadows and

expressed an interest in having Prairie Meadows and the IQHRA again host the

Challenge Championships.

ANNUAL BANQUET/PICNIC: The 2013 Annual banquet, picnic, and All American

dates were discussed. The banquet date was decided to be held Sunday, September, 1.

There will be no picnic on the 2nd

but IQHRA will instead be hosting an “All American

Day” upstairs in the clubhouse for all members, trainers, backside employees and

families. Motion to approve the 2013 schedule and discontinue the picnic made by Bob

Brown, seconded by Brenda Onstot. Motion carried.

2013 BOARD MEETING DATES: The board decided that monthly meetings were not

necessary to conduct business. The following months were decided on: annual meeting

in January, other meetings in March, May, June, July, August, October, November. If

board members are needed to vote on a particular topic and no meeting is scheduled, the

secretary will call the individual board members and a “telephone vote” will be taken.

Motion to approve board meeting schedule for 2013 made by Leonard Reed, seconded by

Bob Brown. Motion carried.

IQHRA BUDGET: Tom will be meeting with Troi to work on a 2013 budget to present

at the November meeting. At the November meeting the board will also review the paid

employees’ past job performance and compensation for the upcoming year.

Currently, entries in the Double Gold futurity and derby are open for non members.

Motion to require owners of horses running in the 2013 and beyond, Double Gold

Futurity and Double Gold Derby to be members of IQHRA made by Butch Hammer,

seconded by Butch Bain. Motion carried.

The board also raised the possibility of increasing membership dues from $35 to $50.

After discussion it was determined to leave dues at $35. The IA- bred supplement was

also discussed. Iowa-breds are winning more open races and thus have pulled more

money from the supplement fund.

The board has received a letter from one of the stallion owners stating he wants more

money distributed to the stallion owners of those offspring winning and placing in the

Double Gold Futurity and Derby. Currently, the winning stallion owner receives $2,500

and if the winning mare owner breeding is purchased the day of the stallion auction the

mare owner also receives $2,500. The stallion owner wants money also distributed to the

2nd

place stallion owner. The discussion was tabled till the November board meeting.

Motion to adjourn made by Butch Bain, seconded by Butch Hammer. Meeting adjourned.

Chris Hovey - Secretary
