International Webinar on “Gandhi and the Ethics of Nursing: A Pedagogy of Care in Times of Corona virus”
T he Department of Political Science, St. Aloysius Col-
lege (Autonomous) Mangaluru is collaborating with Neh-
ru Study Centre of Mangalore University the envisioned
project entitled ‘Multi ways of Imagining India’. This
project is a series of online academic presentations on a
set of 19th and the 20th century intellectual luminaries of
India. Prof. Vinay Lal, Historian and Gandhi Scholar at
the University of
California, Los An-
geles (UCLA), made
the first presenta-
tion under the
above series
through an interna-
tional webinar held
on Monday 05th Oc-
tober 2020.
Prof. Rajaram
Tolpadi, Director-in
-charge of Nehru
Study Centre
(NSC), in his wel-
come speech em-
phasized that the
aim of Nehru Study
Centre is not only
to conduct critical
study on Nehru, but
also to expand the horizon by discussing several other
Indian intellectual thinkers irrespective of their ideologi-
cal base.
Prof. P.S. Yadapadithaya, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore
University inaugurated the ‘Multi ways of Imagining
India’ by delivering the inaugural address and com-
mended the organizers for aptly choosing Mahatma Gan-
dhi as the principal thinker. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ,
the Principal of the College, welcomed the collaboration
between the College and Nehru Study Centre. He high-
lighted Mahatma’s life as inspiring people then and now
during covid 19 times. Dr Rose Veera D’Souza, Dean of
Arts Faculty & HOD of Political Science formally intro-
duced Prof. Vinay Lal through a rich, yet short, CV.
While delivering the talk on “Gandhi and the Ethics of
Nursing: A Pedagogy of Care in Times of Corona virus”
Prof. Vinay Lal walked the participants through Mahat-
ma Gandhi’s understanding and practice of ‘nursing’
from Gandhi’s childhood days to the time spent in South
Africa later in India. He focused his talk on two ques-
tions: how Gandhi would react to the present Pandemic
and how does one think of non-violence during this time.
Gandhi believed in self-reliance in the context of nursing
rather than on modern medicines and treatment while
not denying to others. Apart from mother, Putlibai Gan-
dhi, he was greatly influenced by Florence Nightingale
on nursing. His practice of ‘ahimsa’ and ‘satyagraha’
found him catering to the wounded or sickened during
the Second Boer War and Zulu Rebellion through the
establishment of Natal Indian Ambulance Corps, pneu-
monic plague (Johannesburg) etc. Gandhi’s work in Jo-
hannesburg was an important phase, says Lal.
He worked through the affected without any protective
gear/PPE. He was critical of the ‘third party’ in his Hind
Swaraj wherein he says a doctor comes between the pa-
tient and one’s own physical being. For Gandhi it was
nursing oneself and others.
Gandhi went through a transformation in 1906 wherein
he vowed chastity as care of children was inconsistent
with public work. While Gandhi would have stressed on
self-reliance, there is no saying that the present circum-
stances would demand some form of state intervention
while self-responsibility, self-discipline and restraint
were the need of the hour at the individual level. Prof.
Lal argued that Gandhi had deep suspicion of the state.
State intervention in corona virus times has been uti-
lized to suppress dissent in many parts of the world. The
current talk was based on his recent book that will be
published by Pan Macmillan this year: The Fury of
Covid-19: The Passions, Journeys, and Unrequited Love
of the Coronavirus.
The Q&A session saw very interesting questions on
nursing and feminism, Gandhi’s ideas on modern medi-
cine, missionaries, state intervention and authoritarian-
ism, passive resistance etc. Melnitha Correa, BA student
delivered the vote of thanks.

National Webinar on “Migrant Lives Matter”
T he Ashakiran Jesuit Study House in collaboration
with the Department of Sociology, St Aloysius College
(Autonomous), Mangalore, organized a national webinar
on the theme “Migrant Lives Matter” on 17th October
2020. Rev. Fr. Martin Puthuserry SJ, Head of Labour
and Migration Unit, Indian Social Institute, Bangalore,
was the speaker of the day. Rev. Fr. Martin has done
and continues to do extensive study on the migrant
workers on India (with special concentration on the
Northern and Eastern part of the country) and thus had
enormous amount of
information and his
personal experiences
to share.
The webinar began
with a soulful prayer
by the Jesuit Broth-
ers followed by a
warm welcome to the
speaker and the par-
ticipants by Rev. Fr.
Alphonse Fernandes
SJ, Superior,
Ashakiran. The open-
ing remarks of the
webinar was made by
Rev. Fr. Dr Praveen
Martis SJ, Principal, St Aloysius College (Autonomous),
Mangalore. A very thought provoking message was made
by the Principal where he spoke about the woes of the
migrants which has been there always and was height-
ened during the Lockdown during COVID 19 and how St
Aloysius College has come forward in performing their
social responsibility in these trying times.
The speaker, Rev. Fr. Martin opened his talk stating
“Migrant woes ‘greatest manmade tragedy’ in India since
Partition” which is one of the most highlighted quotes in
recent times by the famous historian Ramachandra
Guha. He presented a completely new perspective to the
migrant situation by comparing their plight with two
historical events: firstly with the disturbing images of
mass migration during the partition of India in 1947 and
secondly, the exodus experiences of the people of Israel
from the slavery in Egypt (Biblical reference).
He went on to stress that in contemporary India decades
of rural distress has led to forced migration among land-
less agricultural labourers and marginal farmers. How-
ever, he pointed towards the fact that urban India did
not really care for these migrant labourers till the
COVID 19 lockdown was announced and the services of
these migrants were not available. And to add to it there
was complete failure and lack of preparedness by the
government during that time. However, despite the
struggle and hardships, these migrant labourers pre-
ferred taking all kinds of risk and trouble to get back to
their villages and hometowns. This was basically their
means of survival in their workplace was no longer avail-
able and the only way they could survive was getting
back to their homes where somehow they could manage
to live. Amidst all of this there was a ray of hope be-
cause when the government failed these poor and help-
less migrant labourers the common man played a
major role. Various NGOs, Civil Society, Educational
Institutions, Students etc. came forward to help.
Rev Fr Martin had four suggestions to give in order to
improve the erstwhile troubled situation of these mi-
grant workers: accepting them as fellow citizens; protec-
tion of their rights; including them in unorganised work-
ers’ social security boards; and providing them with
basic services and entitlements. The talk concluded with
the reference to the Constitution of India [Art.19] (1) (d)
and (e) which states, “all citizens shall have the right ...
to move freely throughout the territory of India; to reside
and settle in any part of the territory of India”. However,
this is possible only when everyone ensures that mi-
grants get justice and only then will they be ever able to
lead a dignified human life throughout the country.
The last part of the webinar, an interactive session, was
moderated by Ms Joan Rita O’Brien, HoD, Department
of Sociology, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Manga-
lore. The speaker took questions from participants
across the country and answered each of them with his
expertise and experience over the years and ended on a
very positive and optimistic note that Indians have the
never to give up spirit and that what has kept us all go-
ing during the difficult times of COVID 19.
The webinar was moderated by Bro. Dapulu Dukru and
the vote of thanks was delivered by Bro. Joseph Maxwell
Jeevakan.

World food day 2020 calls for global solidarity to help the
most vulnerable people recuperate and make food sys-
tems more sustainable and shock resilience . The COVID
-19 global health pandemic has been a time to reflect on
things we truly cherish and our most basic needs. In a
crisis like this it is more important that we take a mo-
ment to recognize the need of supporting our food heroes
-farmers and workers throughout the food system who
have been making sure that the food reaches us from
farm to fork. Hence, To commemorate the importance of
this day, PG Studies and Research In Food Science St.
Aloysius College, took immense pride in organizing a
National Webinar.

ceded by the scientific sessions on the two aspect of Food
Security and Nutrion viz hunger and over-nutrition. The
importance of types of fats and the technological meth-
ods for reducing fats in foods was beautifully dealt by the
first speaker of the day, Dr. A. Surendra Babu, Assis-
tant Professor, Hindustan Institute of Technology and
Science, Chennai. He emphasized that fat in foods is the
most predominating factor towards Over-nutrition or
obesity hence developing methods for its reduction would
mean a great contribution towards Nutrition Security.

Aloysius Jaalasanthe
S uccess and satisfaction of a work can also be defined
by how our work benefits our neighborhood and socie-
ty. One such way of experiencing it is through Social
entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship prompts and
brings the essence to drive social change which has ever-
lasting transformational benefit to the society as a
whole. It is a golden mixture of Commerce and high-
lighting social concern.
Keeping in mind the quintessence of Social entrepre-
neurship and the very purpose of our col-
lege, Entrepreneurship cell has created an online mar-
ket for our local and rural entrepreneurs by bringing
together the Producers and Consumers in and around
Mangaluru through our Noble project ALOYSIUS
JAALASANTHE. This has created a Win-Win situation for
both producers as well as the consumers wherein the
producers get an opportunity to market their home-
grown and homemade products such as pickles, papad,
extracting honey, vegetables etc., and on the other side
the consumers are availing the best quality local prod-
ucts in a convenient E- Shopping format. The Pandemic
COVID 19 has damaged the market and many Entrepre-
neurs have lost their livelihood. This forum makes a sin-
cere effort to create a market by bringing Producers and
Consumers together to create a self-reliant society. Our
students are part of this project through which they are
getting entrepreneurship ideas and skills.

National Webinar on “Covid-19, Galwan and the Vortex of India-China Relations”
T he Dept. of Political Science, St Aloysius College
(Autonomous), Mangaluru organized the National Webi-
nar titled “Covid-19, Galwan and the Vortex of India-
China Relations”. The webinar was held on September
04, 2020 from 1.45 to 3 p.m. Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ.,
the Principal of the College delivered his message where-
in he raised the important question on why the Galwan
incident and the esca-
lation of tensions be-
tween India and China
took place at a time
when the world was
grappling with the
pandemic covid-19.
Dr. Avinash Godbole,
Assistant Professor at
School of Liberal Arts
and Humanities,
Jindal Global Universi-
ty (Sonipat) addressed
the students on the
above theme. Analys-
ing the party cadres,
centralization of power
at the Polit bureau and
its implications to po-
litical system in China Dr. Godbole laid the background
of emergence of Covid-19 in Wuhan and the manner in
which China as a surveillance state controlled the pan-
demic to bring normalcy, particularly to its economy by
April 2020. He linked the pandemic to the current vortex
in India-China relations by focusing on the following
perspectives:1) The self-perception of China towards crit-
icism from the global public and its imagery of ‘world all-
out against China’ particularly after the Covid-19 spread
from the epicenter of Wuhan especially from the US. 2)
The need to go on war footing to contain the pandemic so
as to restart its economic that is largely 60% export-
oriented and therefore pose as a goodwill ambassador in
foreign countries. It’s restarting of the economy was fur-
ther possible given the then policy vacum across the
globe, paralysis in Europe, inability of the US to enforce
the new normal amongst its people, etc.
Dr Godbole maintained that Beijing’s behaviour as in
the Galwan crisis is like any other aggressive behavior
that the former has displayed with countries across the
East China Sea and the South China Sea or Taiwan.
This emanated strongly from its perception of being vic-
tim of world politics.
Galwan looks like an exception during Covid-19 times as
this has erupted as a crisis that has stalled the India-
China relations. This signals a major break in relations
as all the procedures broke down with China attempting
to change infrastructure and patrol points, with at-
tempts to reach higher points in Ladakh. Galwan ap-
peared so far as a symptom of border management
wherein India and China may not have anticipated cau-
salities. China has an attitude of state which wants to
establish transactional economic relations be it with In-
dia or others, applying pressure on countries like India
by playing with small countries within the neighborhood.
Since the Doklam standoff of 2017, relations
between India and China have remained symbolic and
have not made much headway ss suggested by the out-
comes of the Wuhan Summit between Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping. He argued
that China has hardly shown any interest in pursuing
any long-term engagement with any Indian corporate
units and have concentrated only on training their na-
tionals.
Dr. Godbole answered several questions largely coming
from the students and the faculty on QUAD, WTO, India
-US relations, rising powers, etc. The session was moder-
ated by Dr Rose Veera D’Souza the Dean of Faculty of
Arts and HOD, Dept. of Political Science. The entire pro-
gram was coordinated by the Asst. Prof. of the Dept. of
Political Science—Dr Joyce Sabina Lobo (Convenor), Mr

Fr Dionysius Vaz, SJ as the new Provincial of the Karna-
taka Jesuit Province, another good news gushes in with
the appointment of Fr Melwin Pinto, SJ as the new Rec-

around four and a half years. He left no stone unrolled to

sus by making him known to the people we come across
in our daily life,” he said.
