I found that I got better answering questions in ipl2 as I did each question. I was a bit uncomfortable in
the beginning thinking I wouldn’t get the formatting correct and/or miss something else when
answering real, “live” questions as opposed to the practice one I did. The following are my three
questions answered in ipl2 with two out of the three containing feedback.
Question 1
There was a series of TV commercials that aired in the late 1990's, that featured a virtual white
void room that was same as the one shown in the movie "The Matrix".
Can you find out exactly when these commercials were airing on TV, and exactly which
companies used this feature in their commercials?

Greetings from ipl2 and thank you for your question.
I understand you are interested you are trying to find a series
of TV commercials that aired in the late
3 Ipl2 Final Project
1990's which featured a virtual white void room that was same as
the one shown in the movie "The Matrix.” Also, you would like to
know when the commercials were airing on TV, and which companies
used the virtual white void room in their commercials.
I’ve found two possible results which were found by using Google (http://www.google.com) by
typing in “TV Commercials virtual white room.” According to the website, the two possible
companies are The Gap and Carmax. However, based on my research, it is AutoTrader and not
Carmax like the website states. To locate this information, click on the “Advertising” tab
located under the Examples section. From what I can tell, this website is a wiki, was created by
TV Tropes Foundation, LLC, and provided the best answers to your questions.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhiteVoidRoom
I found many videos on YouTube for The Gap by typing in “gap
commercial 1990.” The commercials aired on tv from 1997 to 1999.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4kfS4rQi3M
Based on numerous searches through Google (http://www.google.com), I was unable to
determine if Carmax ever used the virtual white void room in their commercials. I searched for
other similar companies that dealt with used car sales and found that AutoTrader used the
virtual white void room. I located a commercial that AutoTrader did through YouTube. The
year of this tv commercial was 2000.

I was also able to locate another AutoTrader tv commercial that
aired in the 1990s by searching YouTube. While it doesn’t give a
specific year in the 1990s, it would most likely be close to the
video above which was in 2000.

In the TV Tropes website, there are additional companies in the
Advertising section that have used virtual white void room that
weren’t in the 1990s if you would like to know more companies.
There are also many other examples found within the tabs of the
virtual white void room on the website.

Brian,
Thank you for taking on this interesting question about late
1990s commercials. I can see that you did your homework.
As far as I can tell, you included all of the six mandatory
elements in your response, but they aren’t in the order that the
6 Ipl2 Final Project
training manual dictates, with the six mandatory elements in
rough order. Adhering to this form, while it may feel like
coloring inside the lines, helps responses be more readable to
our patrons, and sets up a standard for what to expect when you
request help from the ipl2.
Please revisit the training manual and take a look specifically
at the example answers.
http://training.ipl.org/backroom/refvols/students/module1.html#samplequestions
In your answer, you jump from one possible commercial
(autotrader/carmax), to another (gap) and back again. In the
future, try to keep your answer as straightforward, and linear as
possible.
One more thing, I see you used the phrase “based on my research”,
but didn’t explain what you did to research this distinction. If
you have reason to believe it was autotrader and not carfax, and
your reason isn’t on the page you sent the patron, you need to
explain why you think so.
I love that you pointed out to the patron that the TV tropes
website has additional information they might find useful. Great
idea, and a good job over all.

Sources I consulted and strategies I used: I spent approximately 3 hours finding and evaluating resource as well as writing up my response. I started using ipl2: Information You Can Trust and was getting nowhere. I couldn’t find any website that would help my response to the person. I ended up conducting a Google search for “TV Commercials virtual white room” when I found a website called TV Tropes. It explained all the commercials that utilized the virtual white room and the companies that used them. I found two possible answers to his question: Carmax and The Gap. I ended up doing another search with The Gap and virtual white room which gave me links to some commercials which I posted in the answer. I ended doing more searching and found that it wasn’t Carmax but AutoTrader that had the virtual white room car commercials. I let the person know about this finding. Critique indicating my level of satisfaction with my answer: I think I did fairly well for the first official question by giving access to basic information as well as providing videos of the commercials so the person had a visual reference. I just hope the patron got what he needed. What I would do differently in the future: Looking back especially with the feedback, I didn’t back up my research with finding it was AutoTrader and not Carmax that utilized the virtual white room. I also jumped around more than I should’ve but I know I can keep things more linear the next time around.

Greetings from ipl2 and thank you for your question.
I understand you are looking for Ole Kirk Christiansen's
religious affiliation who was a toymaker and the original
owner/designer of LEGO (1934). I have found a few sources that I
hope will answer your question.
1. A website called Worth a Bowed Head has the first chapter of a
book called The Lego Principle by Joey Bonifacio about the
history of Lego and its founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen. Towards
the middle of the website, there’s a text box that has the first
chapter of the book. It states that he was a Christian and a
member of the Danish Christian movement called Indre Mission
which was an offshoot of the Danish Lutheran Church.
Source:
http://worthabowedhead.wordpress.com/tag/church-discipleship/
While the source is a blog, it does contain the first chapter of
the book where the information was located. I believe it’s a
good source.
15 Ipl2 Final Project
2. I also found an article on a listserv entitled: Ole Kirk
Christiansen - The early years by Jim Hughes which also stated
that Ole Kirk Christiansen’s religious affiliation was Christian
and a member of the Indre Mission.
Source:
http://news.lugnet.com/general/?n=54288
While a listserv isn’t always the best source of information, a
list of the reference materials used is at the end of the article
which are mostly books from what I can tell would back up the
information I provided.
3. I located another source that provided a timeline of Ole Kirk
Christiansen’s life within a website called Brick Fetish. Brick
Fetish provides a history of Lego as well as the whole
Christiansen family. If needed, there is a whole section of
bibliographies. Located in the section, 1916—Billund
Maskinsnedkeri og Tømreforretning, the webpage states that
Christiansen was a devout follower of the Indre Mission which is
the offshoot of the Danish Lutheran Church.

I believe this website is a great source for Ole Kirk
Christiansen’s life as well as the history of Lego. I trust this
16 Ipl2 Final Project
website. I located all three resources by searching in
http://www.google.com
and using the keywords of Ole Kirk Christiansen and religion.
I hope the sources provided have answered your question. Please
don’t hesitate to write back if you have any additional
questions. Thank you for visiting ipl2 and using the service.
Hi Brian,
Thank you so much for your feedback request I would be happy to
provide that for you! This is a great question! You did a great
job with the greeting and welcoming the patron to ipl2 as well as
rephrasing their question to let them know you understood it.
To answer your question, listservs are typically okay to
recommend as resources as many of them are run by professionals
in a given field. It’s usually helpful to find out who is behind
the listserv for instance, is it run by volunteers that are in a
particular field or by volunteers in the general public? More
information on a good strategy to evaluate sources can be found
here:
http://training.ipl.org/backroom/refvols/students/module5.html
The one thing I would like to mention for you to do in the future
is to remember to add the disclaimers we have available for any
website that has community-generated content; be it a blog, a fan
site like Brick Fetish or something as well-known as Wikipedia.
17 Ipl2 Final Project
It’s important to let the patron know of such sites because they
may not be fully accurate or they may have some bias. It’s not
really enough to tell the patron that we trust the site; we want
to also add a little bit about why we trust it. This will also
save you from having to say that something might not be the best
source of information, it’s much better to paste the disclaimer
than to say something might not be a good source. More
information on the different disclaimers can be found here:
http://training.ipl.org/backroom/refvols/students/module1.html#disclaimerscripts
That aside, your format was great, your links were live and easy
to find and you made sure to address the patron’s question when
giving them resources to try; I especially liked the timeline at
Brick Fetish. Your answer was set up nicely and easy to follow.
You remembered to remind the patron to contact us for further
assistance, thanked them for using our service and closed the
email nicely. Overall, you are on the right track. Thank you for
all your hard work!
Sincerely,
Jen D.

enlightened me on research techniques. I appreciate your quick and thorough reply!

LOG:
Sources I consulted and strategies I used:
I spent approximately 2 1/2 hours finding and evaluating resource as well as writing up
my response. I started using ipl2: Information You Can Trust and found nothing that would help
me with my response. I conducted a search on Google with using the search terms of “Ole Kirk
Christiansen” and “religion.” I found a blog that contained a first chapter of the book which
talked about Ole Kirk Christiansen’s religious life. I also found a listserv posting which also
backed up what the website where the first chapter of the book was in. Lastly, I found a
website called Brick Fetish which gave a timeline of the history of Lego as well as the family
history of the Christiansens.
Critique indicating my level of satisfaction with my answer:
This took longer than I thought simply because of trying to locate the resource. Despite
putting in the search keywords, I thought I’d found a website which really didn’t provide me
with the actual answer. I have to say I was really happy that I got a response from the patron
that asked the question and made me feel good that I was able to help. First and only response
from a patron on ipl2. Of course, I only asked three questions but who knows what the future
holds in my ipl2 experience.
What I would do differently in the future:
With the Brick Fetish website, I didn’t realize it was a form of a wiki. I don’t know if I
was happy that it was a source that actually gave me information that I needed after all the
other searches turned up little or it seemed legit but I listed it. I’ll have to be more careful in
the future.
Final Reflection
With these questions in the format of in-person and/or a live chat, I think I would only
be able to give one source. The first question about the white void room took a long time to do
and I don’t think a patron would want to stand around in an in-person encounter. They would
also probably disconnect from a live chat because it would take too long and people tend to get
impatient if the answer isn’t given to them right away. I would have to say when I used the
videos of the commercials in the sources for the first question, I wouldn’t really be able to do it
so much with the in-person encounter but I would be able to do it with the live chat encounter
(if the person was still there when I had the answer). The second wasn’t too bad since it only
took an hour and I think I would be able to provide a more than one source. The third one took
a while too and the patience of the patron might wear thin if they expect more than one
source. Finding the first source didn’t take too long and if the patron was okay with one, it
would be fine in an in-person or a live chat encounter.
19 Ipl2 Final Project
Email reference is here to stay. It comes in especially handy if you are doing a research
project especially if a patron wants a more detailed search. I also think time is a factor since we
all seem to lead very busy lives and it’s easier just to send off an email for a question rather
than waiting for a response in-person or on the phone. Based on personal experience, I’d
rather email a research question then have to wait for a response in-person or on the phone. I
know I would get a more thought out, detailed response going this route. Email reference
would especially come in handy if you were on the west coast for example and an east coast
library had expertise in a certain local history that you didn’t want to call or couldn’t physically
go there to get answered. The email reference service could do your research and email your
response to you. It can be used for the ready reference questions but I see those being handled
by phone, in-person, and live chat encounters. In my opinion, I don’t see email reference being
used for directional help either. That’s an in-person type of question. No one is really going to
call you up and ask where your copiers or restrooms are.
Overall, I have learned a lot more than I thought I was going to with this project. I
learned more of what sources are accepted and why or why not they are. I knew Wikipedias
were shaky but wasn’t sure on listservs which I got my response from the third question I
answers in ipl2. I learned that there are so many different ways to do searches and not to
always rely on Google. There are other sources such as the ipl2 you can use which has a wealth
of websites that can help answer a question or even point you in the right direction. I learned
too that you have to have patience when researching questions that take a long time to answer
where the answers aren’t easily found. You have to do some digging and know what is relevant
and not. I would have to say from what I notice with the patron’s need by date really wasn’t a
specific date. Most where “no need by” which allows the researching not to feel “rushed”
when coming up with a response. The patron would get a more thought out response instead
of a quickly thrown together response that may or may not be up to par.
This experience will be beneficial to my search skills when conducting online searches
from the simpler ready reference to the more detailed research questions. It is not only
beneficial to patrons needing answers but for myself in my professional work. I may need
information on grants or articles on technology trends that are beneficial to the library I work at
(or even manage later in life).
