Message of Chairman
I started IPHS last year, when I still
was the national officer of
standing committee on public
health (SCOPH) in former
IFMSA-IRAN (now called IMSA).
I gathered a team of my motivated
colleagues to help me with realization of
the concept of IPHS. Our first year to me
was a success, given the limited
circumstances and the time shortage that we
had. The experience of IPHS2013 kept us
tuned for a more serious and more elaborate
program for IPHS2014. It wasn’t more than
one month after IPHS2013 that the planning
and team building for IPHS2014 commenced.
During these past 6 months we have been busy,
busy, busy designing the program details and
providing it with proper services it needs. And
now on the verge of initiating this year’s
registration process, I am proud to say that we
have come up with a program that stands tall
amongst other regional public health
promoting events. I, on behalf of IPHS2014
Organizing Committee, hope to see each every
one of you at the opening ceremony of
IPHS2014.
Dr. Aidin Parnia
Founder & Chairman of IPHS
About Iran
Iran, Persia, Parsa, ... you have
heard them all, a country as old
as the history and as beautiful
as eyes can perceive. Here you
can visit glorious ancient
structures like Persepolis, you
can visit most amazing natural
beauties like Harra mangroves,
you can climb the Alborz
mount, or just have a cup of tea
in Hāfiz Garden, and you can
swim in the Caspian Sea. In
Iran you will experience
different cultures and religions,
with a hospitality you have
never seen before.
Iran is a country in southwest
Asia, country of mountains and
deserts. Eastern Iran is
dominated by a high plateau,
with large salt flats and vast
sand deserts. The plateau is
surrounded by even higher
mountains.
Tehran is the capital, the
country's largest city and the
political, cultural, commercial
and industrial center of the
nation. Iran is a regional power,
and holds an important position
in international energy security
and world economy as a result
of its large reserves of oil and
natural gas.
The majority of the population
speaks the Persian language,
which is also the official
language of the country, as well
as other Iranian languages or
dialects. Turkish languages and
dialects, most importantly Azeri
language, are spoken in
different areas in Iran.
Additionally, Arabic is spoken
in the southwest parts of the
country.
Iran's climate ranges from arid
or semiarid, to subtropical along
the Caspian coast and the
northern forests. From cold
weather in North West to hot
climate in the south, you can
find all 4 seasons by traveling
along Iran.
The currency in Iran, or the
money used, is called the Rial
(pronounced ‘reeyaal’).

About Isfahan
Amongst Iranian cities, Isfahan
is a unique jewel that still has a
noble and fascinating shining
after many historical ups and
downs and the passing of several
centuries. It is so fresh as if it has
come to life on this very day; and
yet it is so original and deep
rooted as if it has always been
there.
Isfahan's rich culture and
beautiful nature are in such a
wonderful harmony that they
seem to be each other's
reflection.
Isfahan may be a complete
manifestation of the Iranian-
Islamic civilization, culture and
arts that are as old as Iran herself.
The city of Isfahan links an age-
old fruitful past to the lively and
energetic world of today.
Isfahan has undergone an eye-
catching growth and
development in recent decades. It
has found the face of a modern
city with its increasing
population, expanding area and
new streets, buildings and
factories.
Major academic institutes like
Isfahan University of
Technology, Isfahan University,
the University of Medical
Sciences, Pardis University of
Arts, and several campuses of
Payam Nur and Islamic Azad
University in various cities of the
province have given a special
cultural and academic
importance to Isfahan.
Isfahan may also be well named
the city of Iranian handicrafts
and traditional arts. Carpet
weaving, engraving, miniature
painting, inlaid work, tile
making, brocade, calico and
enamelwork are among the most
important forms of art in Isfahan.
Due to its high potentials and
arts, it can be said that
ISFAHAN is a Museum in
which people Live.
MUI
Isfahan University of Medical
Sciences (MUI) is a university of
higher education in basic medical
sciences, clinical medical sciences
and health services in Iran.
Isfahan University of Medical
Sciences is one of the most
prestigious Iranian medical schools
and admission to the University is
limited to the top students who
pass the national entrance
examination administered yearly.
The university is located in
southern Isfahan; Hezarjarib Street.
Isfahan University of Medical
Sciences provides both
undergraduate and graduate
programs in 32 main departments.
The student body consists of about
12000 students from all the 30
Provinces of Iran and some foreign
countries.
The university was established in
1946 under the name "The Higher
Institute of Health" and later was
elevated to the "School of
Medicine".
Teme of Event “A window to the future of
health”. This is what we came up
with, to express the idea that is going
to dominate this year’s IPHS
programs. But why? Why this
particular theme? There are literally
hundreds of other stuff that can be
talked about public health. Why did
we choose to talk about the future?
The answer is simple … our
audience. Our audience are not going
to be the common oxygen-
consuming bicarbonate burning type
of brain. It is going to be the type of
brain that challenges,
questions, seeks
patterns and comes up with solutions
that shape the future. Not only its
future but also all the other’s as well.
So, yup, that’s where we are headed.
The educational events of IPHS2014
is going to take place in a series of
plans; starting from very basics,
going through several steps of a
successful public health program
design, and finishing with tips about
important modification to a program.
These will take place during 6 days
of group activities, engaging
workshops and exhilarating training
sessions. It’s going to be legen …
wait for it … dary.
Training Program This is where it gets interesting… All
we might know about public health is
its boring and tasteless statistics that
are dreaded by math-fearing medical
students all over the world. But
should it remain that way? Well we
believe our program is the first step
you can take to fall in love with the
concepts of public health and
become one of the critical minds of
future health providers that will
shape the world of medicine.
What is our objective? In one
word…A mini MPH program, which
is nowhere near a regular program of
this kind. The subjects that we try to
cover include the major fields of
MPH courses and are as follows:
- Public health biology and
Biostatistics
- Epidemiology and
Communication
- Leadership, systems thinking,
Health policy and management
- Social and behavioral sciences,
Cultures and diversity
- Professionalism and
Environmental Health
- Program delivery, Health
administration and service
delivery
Don’t be afraid of the titles, the daily
themes of the school consists of a
brief lecture note, followed by a
variety of engaging and innovative
group activities that ends with a
briefing at the end of each day. On
the last day before the closing
ceremony, we are going to have the
“TALK”.
Opening and Closing In 5th September 2014 an opening
ceremony will be held in Isfahan
tourism hotel (official
accommodation site) for
participants. During this ceremony
the most delicious Iranian foods
will be served. It is an opportunity
for participants and organizing
committee to get familiar to each
other in order to start training
sessions in a friendly environment
the next morning.
In 12th September, last day of
IPHS2014, after one week full of
learning and exciting educational
programs, closing ceremony will
be held in Shariati hall in Isfahan
University of medical sciences
with presence of participants,
professors, sponsors, and partners.
We won’t announce our plan for
closing ceremony to keep it
exciting, but we have intended a
happy ceremony full of fun in
appreciation of all participants and
anyone involved in IPHS2014.
Social Programs During the IPHS2014 week, two
official social programs will be
held. The 1st will be held on
Sunday, Sept 7, 2014 as the first
visit of participants from the city
of history and capital of Safavi
dynasty. After lunch time, we
will visit Naghsh-e-Jahan square,
the world’s largest limited
square. It was built by the
Safavids about 500 years ago. In
this program we will visit 3
monuments there. In the North
side of square, beautiful dome of
Sheikh Lotfolah mosque is
shining. It is one of the most
beautiful mosques in the world
due to unusual colors of its tiles.
In the Eastern side, Jame Abbase
mosque attracts any visitor with
its special architecture and
magnificent design. In Southern
side you can see huge building of
Ali Qapu palace, the governing
place of King Abbas.
After visiting Naghshe Jahan we
will visit two other places close
to the square, Chehel Sotoun
palace and museum of Natural
History. Chehel Sotoun palace
has a beautiful garden and an
interesting museum which you
will enjoy for sure. Museum of
Natural History is a place
that you may see a large variety
of animals by taxidermy.
The 2nd social program will be
held on Wednesday, Sep 10,
2014. After all these days full of
training sessions, we will try to
calm down and relax! We will
visit the amazing Garden Birds

number of bird species. After
Garden Birds we will visit Vank
church, an amazing historical
building with many old painting
on walls and museum of
Christianity.
