3IOWA ROYAL SHORTHORN SALE
2013 Iowa Shorthorn Association Honored BreederLonny Flack Family, Oak View Shorthorns
The first registered Shorthorns to grace the pastures of the Flack farm were purchased in 1964from the Jim Fitzgerald Family of State Center, Iowa. The original Flack herd went by the name of Circle FShorthorns until the name was changed to Oakview Shorthorns in 1969. Alvin and Donna Flack, parents ofLonny Flack, purchased what is now the home farm in 1968 and the Shorthorn herd was named OakviewShorthorns due to the numerous majestic oak trees on the farm. Alvin and Donna Flack were previouslyHonored Breeders of the Iowa Royal/Iowa Beef Expo about 25 years ago. The first heifer shown by the fami-ly was Captain's Lavender 3rd, shown by Randy Flack at the Story County Fair in 1964. Lonny showed hisfirst heifer, also at the Story County Fair, Clara 141st, in 1965. She had been purchased on order from Meadow View Ranchesby ASA field man Ted Aegerter for $200. The first heifer exhibited at the Iowa State Fair was Brentwood Village Maid 9th, purchased from RogerAppelgate, in 1967. The Flack Family has shown Shorthorns at the Iowa State Fair every year since. Oakview Shorthorns consigned their first cattleto the Iowa Royal/Beef Expo in 1973 and has missed only three years since. Shorthorns have always been a true family affair with the Flack Family.Lonny's older brother, Randy, and sisters Jane and Susan all showed cattle at numerous state and local shows. Randy taught us all the value ofpatience with animals, Jane enjoyed going to the shows, but I don't think ever truly bonded with her projects, and Susan was the youngest, so shehad to participate. I think she enjoyed it, too. Lonny and Kathie's children all took part in the Shorthorn project. Even Kathie, a town girl, got in onthe act. Less than two weeks after Lonny and Kathie's wedding, we showed eight head at the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids. Kathie was talked intoholding a heifer in the best six head class. No sooner did she take the lead strap in her hand than the heifer sneezed all over the front of her shirt.Needless to say, Kathie's show career was over, though we did talk her into preparing tails later on. Children, Betsy, Andrea, and Bradley all showedcattle at many fairs including the Iowa and Minnesota State Fairs, Kansas City, and Louisville. Bradley is the only family member to show at theNational Junior Shorthorn Show when it was in Iowa a few years ago. The family stays busy with Church and family events. Grandchildren, Nolan,Maddie, Alex, Ben, Johnathan, Katie, and Megan keep us moving with many, many school programs, athletic games, dance recitals, piano concerts, and just plain family get togethers. We will continue to raise Shorthorns and show at the Iowa State Fair as long as we are able. Priorities havechanged over the years, though. I used to so look forward to show day for the excitement and competition, I now most prize the trip to Ye Olde Millwith the grandchildren as soon as we are done showing. We have been fortunate to have had half a dozen or so top selling females at the IowaRoyal and feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing that we have helped many new or young breeders get started in the business along the way.Although we don't really get too serious about showing any more, we have collected more ribbons and trophies than I can count. We even have twoof the silver trays the Iowa Shorthorn Breeders Association used to award the exhibitor of the Champion Bull at the Iowa State Fair. I really don'tknow where any of these things are today. I am blessed to know that my family and friends are more closely at hand.
Real time bidding is available via the internet. Live audio and livevideo will allow buyers to bid on animals just as if they were present at the sale. Buyers must create an account prior to the sale. Go towww.iowabeefexpo.com or to www.LiveAuctions.tv to create anaccount and register for a buyer number. Iowa Beef ExpoHeifer Award
The Iowa Beef Breeds Council has started a program inwhich each breed holding a sale at the Iowa Beef Expowill have the opportunity to present a $500 Iowa BeefExpo Heifer Award sponsored by the Iowa Beef BreedsCouncil to a junior exhibitor who purchased and exhibiteda heifer from their breed sale. Each breed association hasbeen asked to develop their own criteria for this award.Listed below are the two requirements of the Iowa BeefBreeds Council.
The Iowa Beef Breeds Council will award $500 to the junior exhibitor of the highest ranking heifer purchasedfrom each breed sale at the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo andexhibited at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Heifers will beranked at the discretion of each breed association underthe following conditions:
1. The heifer must have been purchased in an Iowa BeefExpo sanctioned sale and exhibited by a junior at the2012 Iowa State Fair.
2. Only one heifer per breed sale (11 total) will be awarded. Therefore, high and low percentage cattlewill be considered for one award. Furthermore, cattlewith multiple breed registrations may only be awardedby the breed association which sold those cattle at the2012 Iowa Beef Expo.

There aren’t many opportunities to obtain a herd sire with genetics fromacross the big pond. Cody found this bull’s sire, Spry’s All Gold, when hewas in Australia and her was excited about what the bull could offer here in the states. All Gold isproducing sound, functional, eye appealing cattle that have a ton of performance, just exactlywhat we expected. It is with great excitement that we bring this son, LSF Tasmania, to the IowaRoyal. Tasmania’s dam, GCF Silver Rose, has consistently produced some of our best calvesevery year and she went big time when we flushed her to All Gold. This bull exemplifies theAustralian philosophy that cattle should be functional, easy keeping, and hard working. Tasmaniahas sound feet and legs, is explosive through his chest, and is big testicled. We are so excitedabout this mating that we are keeping one of his flush mates. Semen sales on All Gold have beenclosed. This is your chance for a new different pedigree behind a stylish bull.
