• What can Cl do to be like a noble gas?– Which is more likely?– What will be its charge?

• What can Mg do to be like a noble gas?– Which is more likely?– What will be its charge?

Ionic Bonding

• Always a metal with a non-metal

• Metal forms a positive ion, cation

• Non-metal forms a negative ion, anion

• Combine at ratios to have neutral charge

• Formula just gives ratio not molecule!

• Keep together

• Often use parenthesis
