Italian Week The First Italian Week at Eastern Medi-
terranean University concluded on Fri-
day, October 25th after five intensive
days, which saw different EMU Faculties
and Departments and four Italian Univer-
sities gathering under the auspices of the
Italian Embassy. The week opened on
Tuesday 22 October with a lectio magis-
tralis held by His Excellency the Italian
Ambassador in Cyprus, Dr. Guido Cerboni who, in his speech, effectively summarized the
importance and historical origins of the role Italy has been playing in the creation and
development of the European Union. The program was diverse and included academic
events (like the lecture of Prof. Raffaella Simonelli of the Polytechnic University of Milan
delivered at the Faculty of Architecture), cultural gatherings (like the exhibition of Carlo
Carnevali held at the Faculty of Visual Arts) and two movie projections. However, the
high point of the week was, beyond any doubt, the seminar on the exchange opportuni-
ties with Italian universities, which boasted the participation of the representatives of the
Polytechnic University of Milan (Prof. Raffaella Simonelli), University of Venice (Prof. Mi-
chela Agazzi and Prof. Martina Frank), Academy of Arts of Perugia (Prof. Carlo Carnevali)
and University of Genoa (Prof. Michele Marsonet). The seminar stirred the interest of al-
most 100 post and undergraduate students some of whom, we hope, will spend time as
visiting students in Italy.
The Nigerian ambassador and consulate
in Turkey visited EMU ahead of the Ni-
gerian independence celebration as
part of their efforts to ensure the well-
being and comfort of the Nigerian stu-
dents living in North Cyprus. They were
warmly welcomed by the staff of EMU
higher administration.
