WhatisMobilitiesResearch?Mobilitiesresearchprovidesinsightintothesocialandmaterialpracticesofcontemporarymobilelives.Itexaminesthecomplexinterconnectionsbetweenphysicalandvirtual,communicativeandimaginativemobilities,andthemovementofpeople,objects,information,capital,resources.
SuccessthroughResearchMobilitiesresearchrichlyinformspolicy,practice,innovation.Theimpactofmobilitiesresearchonthetransport,tourism,andtechnologyindustries,urbanplanning,heritageandlowcarbonpolicyhasbeensignificant.Sincetheearly2000s,leadingcompaniesandorganisationshaveincreasedtheirsuccessthroughtheuseofmobilitiesresearch:
• toavoidwastingpreciousinvestmentthroughfaileddeploymentsofinadequatepoliciesortechnologies
• togeneratenewrevenueoradvantagesbyidentifyingunder-servedneeds
• toenvision,designandtestinnovativepolicies,productsandservicesthatfulfilunder-servedneeds
Mobilitiesresearchersinvestigatethedynamicsofmobilityregimesandsystems.Theyidentifyweaknessesandtroublesaswellasemergenttrends.Throughrigorous,oftencollaborative,experimentalandart-ordesign-basedresearchpracticethatcombinesqualitativeandquantitativeinvestigationswithcriticalevaluation,creative-constructiverecommendations,futuresthinkingandmaking,scenarios,andacommitmenttodeepengagementwithcommunities,policy-makers,designers,planners,engineers,technologydevelopers,mobilitiesresearchersseektoserveandextendsocieties’capabilities.
InspiringInnovationInadditiontoenhancingexistingconditions,mobilitiesresearchhasbroughtimprovementsandnewrevenuebyinspiringinnovativepolicy,productandservicecategories.EarlyexamplesofitspolicyandbusinessvalueincludethecontributionsofmobilitiesresearcherstotheUKGovernment’sForesightIntelligentInfrastructureFuturesProject.Morerecently,collaborationbetweentheUKEconomicandSocialResearch
Council’sSTEPsCentreandtheCentreforChineseAgriculturalPolicyinChinahasreviewedneedsfor,andadvancesin,lowcarboninnovation;whileresearchontheinformationalmobilitiesofmulti-agencydisasterriskgovernanceisshapingthedesignofcollaborationtechnologieswithAirbusDefenseandSpace,Saab,cloudserviceproviderslikeCNETandCloudSigmaintheBRIDGEandSecInCoReprojects;andtheestablishmentoftheMobileLivesForumbytheFrenchRailwaySNCFhasledtoglobalresearchonmobilitytransitions.Now,manyworld-leadingpolicy-makers,municipalities,andtechnologycompaniesrelyonmobilitiesresearchtocreatedifferentiatedpolicies,products,servicesandinnovativedesignsthatarerichlyinformedbyanunderstandingofthecomplexsocialandmaterialpracticesthatshapemobilitysystemsandchange.
