The reserves of iron ore in the state, are estimated at more than 9000 Million tons, the bulk of which is magnetite ore.
The Karnataka Mineral Policy 2008 emphasises priority to the applicants who propose establishment of industries for value addition.

Infrastructure initiative by the StateInfrastructure initiative by the State
• “Special Industrial Zone for Steel” – in the districts viz. Bellay, Koppal, Raichur, Bagalkot & Haveri to be developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
• “Steel Hub of India” – a planned and integrated development of Steel Driven Industrial Urban Complex, in an area 580.70 sq. mtr. of land is being developed by VADA (Vijaynagara Area Development Authority) in Bellary District. The hub provides comprehensive Infrastructure support for the new steel industries.
• “Special Industrial Zone for Steel” – in the districts viz. Bellay, Koppal, Raichur, Bagalkot & Haveri to be developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
