    Body Plan

    Polyp: mouth-up;

    sessile

    Medusa: mouth-down;

    free-moving (drifting

    and contractions)

    Body plan can be life-

    long, or have both

    plans in two stages of

    development.

    Body Cavity

    Diploblastic: two germ layers.

Ectoderm and Endoderm Some can be considered triploblastic.

    Less-developed mesoderm

    Overall, lack body cavity.

    Gastrovascular cavity: site of digestion.

    Body Symmetry

    Cnidarians have radial symmetry.

Radial Symmetry- They radiate from thecenter and if divided through the central axis

it will be symmetrical. It does not have a

head or rear or left or right.

    12/26

    Digestion

    1) Tentacles take in prey. Enters through the

mouth.2) Prey enters the gastrovascular cavity.

    3) Nutrients stored in food vacuoles in

    gastrodermal cells.

    4) Undigested remains pushed out through

    anus.

    Locomotion/Musculature

Cnidarians use tentacles for locomotion andalso for feeding and defense.

Their tentacles are equipped with cnidocytes, which are unique cells that function indefense and capture of prey. It injects poisoninto the prey.

Some forms of Cnidaria are positionedpermanently on the ground while some floataround using their tentacles.

    Skeletal System

    Has hydrostatic "skeleton" some with

external or internal skeletons of calciumcarbonate or organic material.

Meslogea is the endoskeleton while chitin is

    their exoskeleton.

    Sensory/Nervous Features

Cnidaria has a very simple nervous system, they have what is known as a nerve net.

These nerves are mostly in epidermisconnected to the gastrodermis.

Their nerve net is not centralized and is only

associated with simple sensory structures. Because it is not centralized they can detect

and respond to a stimuli equally from alldirections.

    Reproduction

Has both asexual and sexual reproduction, but does not undergo alternation of

generations. The polyp stage is asexual and the medusa

    sage is sexual.

These two stages alternate and one

    produces the other.

    Gas Exchange

Cnidarians do not have/need a respiratory

system. Their skin is thin enough to diffuse in and out

    of the body.

    Quiz Question #1

What is the type of body cavity of Cnidarians?

    Annmarie Mendoza

  • 7/27/2019 Invertebrata Asli

    20/26

    Quiz Question #1 Answer

Cnidarians are diploblastic. They cannot have a

body cavity because they do not have amesoderm.

    Quiz Question #2

Cnidarians come in two body plans. What are

they and how are they different?

    Annmarie Mendoza

    22/26

    Quiz Question #2 Answer

Cnidarians can either be in polyp form or

medusa form.Polyps are sessile, with their tentacles and

    mouth/anus pointing upwards.

Medusa are free-moving, with their tentacles

    and mouth/anus pointing downward.
