I wonder whether you’ve seen therecent advertising campaign thatposes the question “The meaning oflife is ….”. Underneath runs the strapline “Fill in the blanks at alpha.org”.For the past two decades, ALPHAhas been the friendly, non-threaten-ing context through which manypeople have been introduced to theChristian faith and been helped tofind answers to many of their spiritualquestions. In our own area of Inver-ness as well as throughout thecountry, many new alpha courses willbe launched and you can find onenear to you by logging on towww.alpha.org
I was in my teens when I discoveredthe answer to the question “Themeaning of life is ….” I was just likemany teenagers who weren‘t in-volved in anything particularly bad ordestructive. But I already knew thatthere was something missing frommy life. I didn’t know who or what thatwas. Paul H. Johnston said “God hasshaped a peculiar vacuum inside us- a vacuum shaped like God. Nothingcan satisfy that vacuum except God
Himself. You can put money, homes, wealth, power, fame or anything youwant into the vacuum, but it doesn’tfit, Only God fills it, fits it and satisfiesit.” I was trying to fill the vacuum inmy life with things that brought mepleasure. The church and Jesusdidn’t have any place in my life butmeeting with committed Christians atschool and observing their livescreated a curiosity within me. Therewas something attractive about them. They had something I knew I didn’thave and I wanted to find out whatthat was. There were lots of ques-tions asked and we had many dis-cussions. It didn’t take me long todiscover that what was missing frommy life was a personal relationshipwith Jesus Christ.
I knew a little about Jesus as a his-torical person but I didn’t know Himpersonally in my life. The more I readthe Bible and spent time with com-mitted Christians, the more I discov-ered about myself, about God andabout Jesus. I really didn’t needanyone to tell me I was a sinner. Iknew that from my own experience.
But I did discover how much Godloved me and how Jesus dealt withmy sin so that I could become a newperson and have a new start in life.
Jesus said in John 10:10 “Mypurpose is to give life in all its full-ness.” Now I’m getting closer to re-tirement, I can tell you I’ve proved thetruth of this for myself over theseyears. There wasn’t any ALPHA whenI was a teenager but I’m thankful forpeople who took time to answer myquestions and discuss the things Ifound difficult to accept until I invitedJesus to take control of my life andbecome my Lord and Saviour.
If you are looking for answers to life’sgreat questions, I encourage you tofind an ALPHA course near to you orto visit a church where you are giventhe freedom to ask your questions. You’ll find a warm welcome and Ipray that you also may be able to dis-cover the answer to “The meaning oflife is …”

‘As safe as houses’ - a phrase that we often hear to reflect something that is beyond risk and a solid investment. In thelast few years the national media would have us believe that the property market is no longer ‘as safe as houses’. Buthow much of this is scaremongering to make a good story, and how much of it is actually based in truth.
Below is a table of house values across the whole of the UK including Scotland, which shows price movements overthe past 35 years, moving from an average house price (adjusted to take into account inflation) in 1975 of £75,188 tothe current level of £168,719. We can see from the graph that there has been a general movement upward with occa-sional periods of falling prices, most notably in the period 1990 to 1995, and then 2007 to the present time. But it canbe seen that these periods are generally temporary and in the past growth has returned relatively quickly.
So what has been happening in Scotland? In the graph to the right we see that averagehouse prices in Scotland overall have risenfrom approximately £75,000 at the begin-ning of 2000 to approximately £162,000 atthe end of June 2010.
More regionally still, in 2010 it now appearsthat Glasgow, Edinburgh and the CentralBelt have now begun moving into a morestable growth situation with the rest of Scot-land (including the North more generally andthe Moray Firth Coast in particular) hot ontheir heels (source Lloyds TSB Scotland).
Property professionals in the Moray Firthregion have reported increased levels ofsales activity generally, with prices startingto firm up.

Thai Steamed Scottish Salmon
Over the summer months we have beenplaying with the fusion of some differentflavours from around the world. One of themost popular dishes we have created is ThaiSteamed Scottish Salmon, which is a very quick& easy dish to create, healthy and cost effec-tive. If you do not like salmon you can use troutor a good thick white fish such as cod.
Serves 2 peopleCooking time – 20 minutesPreparation time – 30 minutes
Ingredients
1 bunch of fresh corianderSome fresh mint leavesTeaspoon of ginger3 teaspoons of garlicPinch salt & pepper2 limes, juiced up1 large red chiili, deseeded and finelychopped (wash your hands thoroughly after handling the chilli!)1 large pudding spoon of fish sauce (if you don’t have fish sauce, use a fish stock cube with a splash of dry sherry)2 scottish salmon fillets
Method
In a food processor, throw in the coriander, mint, ginger, garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, chill-ies, salt & pepper and blend until smooth.
Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dishand pour the sauce over, making sure thesalmon is well covered. Leave for 30 minutesin the fridge.
Set up your steamer and add a little limejuice to the water. Place the marinated salmonin the steamer, take a spoonful of the marinadeand pour over the top of the salmon. Steam forapprox. 20 minutes.
Once the fish has been steamed, servewith noodles or rice and some stir fried veg-etables.

City Flood Defences - Update
the head of transport and infra-
structure provided a detailed pres-
entation to members regarding
development Phases i and ii of the
downstream sections of the south
West channel. the history of flood-
ing in inverness was outlined and
the types of flooding which affect the
city explained in further detail. it
was emphasised that in inverness
the important factor is the combina-
tion of tidal surges and weather-
related flooding. it was further
clarified that the dwarf wall design
for the flood defences would be at-
tractive and in keeping with the ex-
isting streetscape designs, so as to
not be detrimental to the riverscape.
• the new flood Plan must include a
regular maintenance schedule and
this would improve the management
of sites;
• a new flood team had been es-
tablished and would be consulted
during the planning process for new
developments. in future, greater em-
phasis would be placed on the pro-
vision of advice on new
developments and in particular
keeping developments away from
flood plains. the flood team would
also ensure suDs schemes and at-
tenuation Ponds are in place; all with
the help of 3-D planning
• new regulations are about to be
published, clarifying who is respon-
sible for the maintenance of attenu-
ation Ponds/suDs schemes and
these would be monitored
• it was noted that gullies needed to
be emptied of weeds and litter and
this was part of a tecs cyclical
maintenance programme. mr r
evans to be alerted to this.
Scotland’s Housing Expo
the following was highlighted:
• there would be 52 houses on 27
plots with a variety of styles, includ-
ing flats, semi detached and bunga-
lows. 20 of these would be
affordable and managed by albyn
housing
• each of the houses had a theme,
for example highland council’s plot
would demonstrate recycling in the
home environment
• 6 contractors had been employed
on site
• there would be workshops, semi-
nars, lectures and exhibitions
throughout the event
• the economic benefits to inver-
ness had been estimated at
between £550,000 and £680,000
with 30,000 visitors expected
extracts from the minutes of the meeting of 7th June 2010 of inverness city committee
Parliament Blog ”“"So, you are onholiday, then!"he asked, grin-ning broadly."No, in recess," Ireplied. "That'spolitician speak
for holiday" he claimed, beforeadding, in a nudge-nudge wink-wink kind of way: "more time to turnthe sprinkler on the duck pondhouse, eh?"... "No, actually the onlyducks I have are the collection ofyellow plastic ones my two year olddaughter plays with in the bath, to-gether with her mini motoriseddolphin which swims up and downits length.........
This was at the more sceptical endof the many exchanges I haveenjoyed, over the past month, spending recess time visiting localsmall businesses in Inverness and
Nairn. As a Government Minister Iam out of the constituency a lot so Iwas keen, as local MSP, to gain anup to date impression of what is ontheir mind. Whilst I am sure we willnot forsake M & S and the EastgateShopping Centre, the Old Town ofInverness and the narrow shoppingstreets of Nairn have a great deal tooffer. They are not only underratedbut also under visited. As someonewho has over the years, regularlyused many of the shops there, Iwould make this plea to Spotlightreaders: Give the old shops a try,or another chance, if you have gotout of the way of using them. Thereis a diverse array of goods and serv-ices, many specialised, and many ofthe items that you will simply notsee in the UK multiples, efficientthough they are. If we don’t usethem, we may lose them.
P a r l i a m e n t ’ssummer recess isupon us, but –this year espe-cially – the busi-ness ofG o v e r n m e n t
goes on.
While there will still need to be afew visits to London, it is a greatrelief after some of the most hecticmonths of my life to be able to spenda bit of time with the whole familyback in the Highlands.
Every year since I was first elected,I’ve used this period to hold advicesurgeries in many of the smallercommunities which I am fortunateto represent.
As well as being a chance to raisethe kinds of problems facing indi-
viduals that regularly come up at mysurgeries in Inverness, Nairn andall over the Strath, surgeries in eachvillage hopefully offer people thechance to come and speak to meabout more general concerns too –both locally and nationally.
Given the choice between theendless succession of meetings inWhitehall and an August afternoonspent working my way down LochNess-side from Dores to Foyers,Whitebridge and Gorthleck, I cer-tainly know which is preferable!
So please do look out for details inthe press and come along and seeme if you would like to.
