Koichi SHIBUKAWA, Masahiro AIZAWA, and Toshiyuki SUZUKI. 2020. Comparative mor-phology, validity, and limits of the genus Inu Snyder, 1909 (Gobiiformes, Oxudercidae), with comments on the diversification of the related interstice-dwelling goby genera in Japan. Bull. Mus. Nat. Env. Hist. Shizuoka, (13): 79–116.

ABSTRACT The interstice-dwelling goby genus Inu Snyder, 1909, known only from the Japanese waters, is redefined as valid. Due to its superficial resemblance, Inu has been regarded as a junior subjective synonym of the other littoral goby genus Luciogobius Gill, 1859 by several researchers. Inu is, however, distinguished from Luciogobius by having, e.g., a pair of distinct, rounded or truncate plate-like mental flaps (vs. mental flap typically forming an indistinct bump, except for a single species), numerous minute spinous tubercles along posterior margin of dorsal fin (vs. absent in Luciogobius), intermuscular bones comprising laterally-directed pleurals and weak epineurals (vs. epineurals usually absent or, if present, fewer and greatly reduced in size), frontal not contacted with parasphenoid (vs. partially contacted), non- or much less-developed zygapophysis at anterobentral corner of centrum of respective caudal vertebrae (vs. well developed), and a dark-colored vertical bar just behind caudal-fin base (may be indistinct in dusky individuals vs. absent). Its putative closest, Clariger Jordan and Snyder, 1901, is merely distinguished from Inu by having first dorsal fin with three spines; further researches are needed for resolving the limits of these two genera. Inu is composed of following three valid species, in addition to at least two undescribed species: I. ama Snyder, 1909; I. koma Snyder, 1909; I. saikaiensis (Dôtu, 1957). Specializations in morphological characters, carrying diversification of Inu and allies (Astrabe Jordan and Snyder, 1901, Clariger, and Luciogobius) amongst interstices of intertidal and adjacent subtidal gravel bottoms in Japan, are also commented.
