Introducon If you are thinking about donang to a registered polical enty (polical party, constuency associaon, candidate, nominaon contestant or leadership contestant) or planning to aend a fundraising event held by a polical enty, this guide provides an overview of the rules set out by the Elecon Finances and Contribuons Disclosure Act (EFCDA). What is a contribuon? A contribuon is a donaon of money, real property, goods or services, or the use of real property, goods or services, provided for the benefit of a polical enty, without returned compensaon from the polical enty to the donor. What contribuons are disclosed? An individual who contributes more than $250 in any calendar year will have their name and contribution(s) publicly disclosed, as required by the EFCDA. The information is available on the Elections Alberta website and in the public files maintained at Elections Alberta's office. Fundraising Events Only a individual who is ordinarily resident in Alberta is allowed to purchase a ticket or pay admission to a fundraising event held by a political entity. A portion of the price paid is considered a contribution; the portion is set by the political entity based on EFCDA rules. A prohibited enty is not allowed to reimburse a person for the cket or admission price, as it would be a violaon of the EFCDA. When can a contribuon be made? Who is eligible to contribute? Only an individual who is ordinarily resident in Alberta may make a contribution to a registered political entity. Corporaons, unincorporated associaons, and organizaons are prohibited enes, and therefore prohibited from making contribuons. This also includes trade unions and employee organizaons, as defined by the EFCDA. How much can be contributed? Starting January 1, 2020, an individual can contribute a maximum of $4,243 per calendar year ($4,000 per calendar year for 2019 and previous years) to one or a combination of the following political entities: • polical pares • constuency associaons • candidates • nominaon contestants • leadership contestants • Volunteer labour provided by a person who does not receive from his or her employer, or any other person, compensaon or paid me off to volunteer. • Audit and professional services provided free of charge for work relang to compliance with the EFCDA. What is not a contribuon? A contribuon is allowed to be made: • to a polical party at any me • to a constuency associaon at any me except during a campaign period for an elecon • to a candidate only during a campaign period for an elecon • to a leadership contestant only during a campaign period for the leadership contestant • to a nominaon contestant only during a campaign period for the nominaon contestant
