Introduction

Goals and focus of TSCM

•  Focus: design and organisation of flows of goods and services and related flows of money and information in supply chains and transportation networks.

•  Objectives include: –  Understand similarities in the behaviour of transport

company belonging to different sectors. –  Learn to analyse and solve logistical problems at a

company level and at a supply chain level –  Develop solution approaches to design supply chains. –  Understand the impacts of government regulation on

transport and supply chain management.

•  Three core courses to get in depth knowledge of transportation and supply chain management.

•  Specialization courses that focus in more detail on either the transport sector or SCM.

•  Micro and meso perspective (e.g., transport and logistics processes)

•  Macro perspective (e.g., government regulations and environment)

•  Real-life supply chains and transportation networks will be studied in several courses.

Period 1: DL & SCM and TEM

•  DL & SCM: –  Review key concepts and trends in a supply chain –  Discuss tools for analysing + redesigning supply

chains –  Discuss integration with commercial issues –  Focus on interrelation from strategic to operational

level

•  Transport Economics and Management: –  Discussion of economic foundations of pricing and

network strategies in transport sectors, –  Discuss the implications for the transport policy

Period 2: DMSC

•  Decision Making in Supply Chains aims to provide you with knowledge and experience in decision making support tools (spreadsheet, simulation) to deal with complex logistics decision problems in supply chains.

•  Simulation is a technique to model proposed or existing processes. A simulation model gives the opportunity to make key decisions quickly before implementing changes in an existing system or building a new system.

A case: designing an airport

•  With simulation we can address questions as: –  How to organize and design all processes such that

customers are satisfied and operating costs are minimized?

–  How many employees are required at each of the processes?

–  How to avoid bottlenecks in the airport?

Specialization courses (period 2)

•  Network Analysis –  Basic applied network theory –  Government interventions in network sectors –  Clustering and spill-over effects between firms –  Network sectors (e.g. telecom, transportation, energy) –  The economics behind standard setting

•  Supply Chain Execution & Geo-Logistics –  Warehouse Management –  Transport Management –  GIS (geographic information systems) –  RFID, GPS

Research Seminars period 3 & 4

•  Research Seminar (I) is a practical project where you can show your skills in identifying, analysing and solving real-world problems.

•  In Research Seminar (II) we present an overview of suitable research methods that you can use in designing your research framework. –  Start of writing your master thesis

Specialization courses (period 4)

•  Distribution Logistics & InterOrganisational Systems –  Transport planning & management –  Collaborative planning –  Smart supply networks
