Aims of this module

This module aims to provide you with:

• self-awareness of your career prospects whilst preparing

you for your final MSc dissertation

• helps to organise your study effectively in order to achieve

your strategic goals

• an introduction to research and the required skills needed to

undertake a Masters dissertation

Strategy

•  A range of teaching and learning strategies may be employed,

including lectures, guest speakers, group work, role-play,

independent supported learning and collaborative work.

•  A student centred approach will be adopted including,

involving an independent supported learning environment.

 At the end of this module, you should be able to:

•  Critically reflect on performance, plan and put into practice strategies

for improvement for study planning and career development

•  Demonstrate an ability to use technical and educational resources

including presentational software effectively and apply differentapproaches to the collection of data and information

•  Demonstrate an ability to produce technical presentation and

documentation to professional standard

•  Demonstrate a critical and practical understanding of the methods

employed in research and an awareness of ethical and access issuesrelated to research and industrial collaboration and utilisation of data.

Topics we will cover  

• Correct referencing in reports

•  Reflect on and discuss the expectations of a Masters Level

 Award

•  Transferable skills that will assist the student in their futurecareer planning including obtaining a placement and for

further postgraduate study eg. development of personal

presentation skills, conducting interviews to assist in

research and producing technical reports

•  Refine skills in project planning, organisation of study

materials, presentation and dissemination of research,

research proposal specification, techniques of research

report writing

Topics we will cover  

•  Methods and skills of literature research, gathering of datafrom a range of sources, selecting and using appropriate

technologies available (e.g. library, digital library, Internet

facilities and other sources).

•  The professional issues ever present in the environment,

including health and safety, standards, ethical and social

issues, professional bodies.

•  Techniques required to analyse data and to present the

results in a suitable format.

•  Research proposal specification, regulations andsupervisor's role.

•  A student will demonstrate a wide range of professional and

IT skills such as producing technical documents, research

papers and outline project proposals and plans.

• Contains a short (about 200 words) description

of the research

• Preliminary research problems

•  Aims and objectives

• The outcome of the research

• Include your references using Harvard

The Proposal  – 45%

• Details your intended dissertation

• Detailed specification of a maximum of 10 pages

(see proposal format)

• Needs to include an introduction, project

background, project aims and objectives,

intellectual challenge, research programme,

deliverables, and resources• Include a Gantt chart project plan (for

dissertation duration of 24 weeks)

Literature Review  – 45%

• You need to write a literature review of 3000 words

• To do so must do a thorough literature search

• Literature review should show a grasp of the ‘body ofknowledge’

• Cover established theories and latest trends• Must show familiarity with authors and ‘Schools of

thought’ 

• Will include many relevant references

• Need to use Harvard referencing, examples at:
