Please read and refer to the following chapters in Inside MapInfo Professional

(these chapters are on the network and in BOX)

Chapter 1: Introducing MapInfo ProfessionalChapter 2: A Whirlwind Tour

Chapter 5: Displaying MapsChapter 9: Preparing Hardcopy Output (Pages 348-351) and

Chapter 4 Map Design found in ”Geographic Information Systems –Applications in Forestry and Nat. Res. Mgt.”). These two chapters

provide many helpful hints for designing preparing map layouts

Please read and refer to the following presentations for information and assistance with MapInfo and lab write-ups:

To grasp an understanding of GIS one should read each chapter and perform the in chapter sample exercises prior to completing the exercise at the end of the chapter.

The files referenced are from the CD-ROM that accompany “Inside MapInfo Professional”. You should find a copy of these files in a folder titled “Samples” on the network drive:

N:\Class_folder_web\SFR400\Samples or

“Box” Samples

Note: When citing the source of these files in a layout you should state that they are from “Inside MapInfo Professional companion CD”. These files are not provided from MapInfo nor from the University of Maine.

There are two methods of copying files to your workspace.

First - set your directory preferences for Tables and Workspaces to your folder on the “D: Your name\Lab1 ” drive as follows:Pro >Options > Directories

Method 1: this method requires that the user select all of the necessary sub-files

Using Windows Explorer select all of the sub-files from the source directory on the server or in “Box” and copy them

Paste all of the files into your working directory on your local D:drive.

Method 2: the program manages all of the sub-files needed for a given GIS layer

First - set your directory preferences for Tables and Workspaces to your folder on the “D: your name\Lab1” drive as follows:Pro >Options > Directories

Then open the necessary map tables (layers).Save the files to your local drive. Save all of the San Francisco files and University files to your lab1 folder Important note – open all of the California files and save them to your lab1 folder, then close all of your files that are open.Once all of the open of California have files have been closed you should open and save the files for the second map of the University.

Once the files have been saved, choose:Close all the open files

Reopen the files from your work folder and now you will be able to edit and /or modify the individual files

How to Open Tables (layers)

Once all of the files for a project (e.g. Map1) have been opened from your D: drive, save the desktop configuration to a workspace: e.g. Map1-1.wor to the same folder where your files are stored.

Please refer to pages 75-77 (Ch.3) Inside MapInfo Professional text, and Introduction to MapInfo.ppt for assistance with workspaces.

Be sure to save the workspace before exiting the program; and be sure that the workspace is being saved to the proper place (i.e. the same folder as your files are saved on the “D:Your name\Lab 1” in your designated folder. MapInfo, like other GIS programs, is very specific where files and data layers are stored!) Be careful not to overwrite someone else's data.

Save a Workspace

After reading and performing the various sample exercises within Chapter 5, complete the “end-of-chapter” exercise starting on page 194.

Submit the final map, as depicted on page 195. However, you will have to include additional information as this is not a complete map: Include all of the required map elements (Title, Scale, North Arrow, Notes, Source(s), disclaimer, etc..).

For a location Map, you may use the California counties layer

For the final report Print a Color hardcopy of your finished layout.

Final Output 1: Map Layout 1

Page 11: Introduction to MapInfo 16 and Layout - University of Maineapollo.umenfa.maine.edu/SFR400/s/Lab Exercise-1.pdf · Introduction to MapInfo 16.ppt (Introduction to MapInfo) ... Create

Create a map of the Old Town/Orono area using as many or as few of the layers listed above.

Incorporate ALL of the required map elements (see Maps.ppt for the list) on the map layout.• For the location diagram you may wish to use the Old Town and /or Orono

files along with their respective road files.

• You may wish to customize the map layout to make it easier to interpret. Following are some suggested changes:

• Change colors

• Change line types/styles

• Addition of labels

For the final report Print a Color hardcopy of this layout as well

Final Output 2: Map Layout 2

Maps:

1. Map Layout 1 – A complete map following the steps outlined on page 194-195 found in chapter 5 of Inside MapInfo Professional plus all of the necessary map elements.

2. Map Layout 2 – A complete map of your design using any or all of the data layers for the Old Town/Orono area. You choose the theme of this layout.

3. Color maps for Layout 1 and Layout 2

4. No more than a one page summary, in bullet form, listing what you did beyond the required minimum.

5. Review the Map Grading Checklist prior to submitting your report.

6. This report will be due week of February 5-8, 2018 by the end of your lab period. This gives you two weeks to complete the exercise. You should not wait until the last minute to complete the report.

7. Reminder, do not staple your lab report.

Save all of your work!

It is helpful to backup your work to a mini-disk (thumb drive)

To make it easy to identify your thumb drive should it become lost, create a file that contains your name and contact information and save this file with your full name.

Then should you happen misplace your thumb drive, check with Louis ….misplaced thumb-drives usually find their way to 208 Nutting.

Good Luck

Don’t Forget!!
