Using appropriate Tense remains a guessing gameo No Tenses model that effectively shows how to apply them directly from the

mindo Using the appropriate helping verb and/or verb is a cause of much confusiono The models taught in schools cause learners to form a wrong sub-conscious

perception of Tenseso Thus learners rely on, ‘But it sounds right!’

Concord has random applications and tend to confuseo When to use ‘is’ or ‘are’ causes great confusion i.e. Either the girls or the boy

is/are there.

Mispronunciations of specific sounds and words in English within the South African context

o The puzzling phonetically spelled ‘ə’ sound, as in ‘bin’ (not ‘bien’) o Where to place the emphasis on multi-syllable English words becomes

confusing because of home language inclinations i.e. economics or economics?

Different English aspects as well as terminology confusei.e. Parts of Speech, Parts of Sentences, Figures of Speech; words such

as ‘Auxiliary Verbs’

ISSUES FOR LEARNERS WHO HAVE ENGLISH AS A 2ND OR 3RD LANGUAGE
