Colossians 1:9-10 9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

Three “How’s” to Avoid

1. Legalism – I am awesome because I follow rules.

2. Asceticism – I am awesome because of what I deny myself.

3. Mysticism – I am awesome because of my spiritual experience

Colossians 2:16-17 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Colossians 2:18a 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism …

“the doctrine that through the renunciation of the desires of the flesh and of pleasure in worldly

things and through self-mortification or self-denial one can reach a high spiritual or

intellectual state” - Websters

Colossians 2:18-19 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

Christian Mysticism Web Site:• While we honor the Scriptures, we want to know God

directly, not just through Scripture.• While we respect our heritage of teachings about

God, we want to know God directly, not through doctrines and teachings.

• While we gather in communal worship, we want to know God directly, not just through the Church.

Colossians 2:20-22 20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings?

Colossians 2:23 These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
