Introduction Thank you for taking the time to read the State Tournament Predictions Report. As I embark on year number eighteen – for which I have record – of doing this in some way, shape, or form … we can only reflect on how the first sixteen years have went in the way of predictions, since there was no individual state tournament last year. For those not up to speed on the present state of world affairs, right around the time of the district tournament last year there was lots of noise going around about the phenomenon known as COVID-19. Governor Mike DeWine had already started precautionary restrictions, most notably cancelling most aspects of the “Arnold Fest” and limiting others to all but competing participants. By the time Sunday and Monday came around after the district tournament, there were plans in place to have the state tournament but limit attendance to two spectators per qualifying athlete. However, by Thursday afternoon on March 12 th just as many athletes and coaches were making their trips into Columbus one day before the event was slated to start, the decision was made to postpone the state tournament. Said postponement became a cancellation six weeks later. The COVID-19 pandemic and the government policies related to it remain part of our lives eleven months later as another post-season of wrestling approaches. Heading into and even through the fall, there was concern about if there would be a wrestling season here in Ohio, and what it would look like. Despite the abnormal competitive climate – and what has been a circuitous season for many – we all should be grateful that the state government, the OHSAA, and the wrestling community has worked together to create the season that has taken place. Take a look around the country for some reasons why. New York is not going to have a scholastic wrestling season, Illinois and New Jersey are slated to start seasons in March but there is presently no plan for individual post-season tournaments in those states, Michigan just started its season in the middle of February without an announced plan for a state association sponsored post-season tournament, while Pennsylvania had a delayed start to its season along with more inconsistency in terms of events happening and a convoluted individual post-season series. The 2020 state tournament had no wrestler on track to win their fourth state title. It goes without saying that there will be no four-time state champions crowned in 2021, 2022, or 2023. No wrestler from the Class of 2021 won state titles in both 2018 and 2019; while Peyton Fenton (Elyria), Seth Shumate (Dublin Coffman), and Gavin Brown had won state titles in 2019 as freshmen. In total, the Buckeye State features 24 wrestlers to have won four state titles; the first of which was Mark Zimmer (Columbus DeSales), who won the first of his state titles on March 13 th in 1976. He tragically passed away after a three-year fight against ALS on February 16 th of this year. Due to Ohio State not wishing to host the state wrestling tournament because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the OHSAA has arranged for the state tournament to be held at three different Central Ohio high schools on Saturday March 13 th and Sunday March 14 th . Last year was supposed to be the first time that the state championships would be conducted on a Sunday since 1992, when they were held at the Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University. The state tournament being held at multiple sites has not happened since 1978 when the Class A state tournament was held at Otterbein College with Class AA and Class AAA being held at St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State University. However, by Thursday afternoon on March 12th just as many athletes and coaches were making their trips into Columbus one day before the event was slated to start, the decision was made to postpone the state tournament. No wrestler from the Class of 2021 won state titles in both 2018 and 2019; while Peyton Fenton (Elyria), Seth Shumate (Dublin Coffman), and Gavin Brown had won state titles in 2019 as freshmen. first of 33 individual state tournament team titles, and Brian Heffernan became the program’s first individual to win a state title, with 110 additional happening in the years since. Eleven wrestlers enter the 2021 post-season having already won a state title in their careers. Joining the three listed above as 2019 state champions are Padraic Gallagher (St. Edward), Garrett Lautzenheiser (Louisville), Alek Martin (St. Paris Graham), Zack Mattin (Delta), Dustin Norris (Cincinnati LaSalle), and Davin Rhoads (Loisville); while Casey Barnett (Milan Edison) and Victor Voinovich (Brecksville) won state titles back in 2018 when they were freshmen. Looking at the team landscape, all three divisions have a relatively clear favorite in the individual state tournament. St. Edward had won four consecutive titles in the individual tournament entering last year, and is in position to add yet another to their staggering stretch of dominance. More interesting is a potentially tight three-team battle for second place between Wadsworth (2010 state champions), Brecksville (2018 state runners-up), and Dublin Coffman. Should Dublin Coffman emerge in second place, they would become the highest finishing team from the Central District in the history of the big-school classification (also including the single-class event in years prior to 1971). Before the cancellation of last year’s event, the 19-year reign of St. Paris Graham was in jeopardy. Louisville had knocked off the Falcons in the dual team state final, and had an equal number of state qualifiers for the individual tournament. However, here in 2021 expect the Falcons to reign supreme and do so in relatively dominant fashion over projected runner-up Louisville. The cancellation of last year’s state tournament hit Milan Edison really hard in Division III. The Chargers had just won their second dual team title (first was in 2017), and were travelling to the Schott with ten wrestlers, which was two more than the next most and four more than any other team. They never were champions in the individual state tournament, but finished third the two previous years. This year, Milan Edison is projected to have their highest finish in the individual state tournament, but that is expected to be a second place standing behind Legacy Christian. The scary thing for the rest of Division III is that the Knights have zero seniors among their ranked wrestlers. One of the obvious purposes for writing this report is to predict (hopefully correctly) who wins the state title in each of the 42 weight classes (14 in each of the three divisions). Let’s see how that has played out over the years that trend data is available. 2004- DI 8/14, DII 10/14, DIIII 10/14 (TOTAL = 28) 2005- DI 9/14, DII 9/14, DIII 3(or4)/14 (TOTAL = 21 or 22) 2006- DI 10/14, DII 9/14, DIII 7(or8)/14 (TOTAL = 26 or 27) 2007- DI 10/14, DII 8/14, DIII 9/14 (TOTAL = 27) 2008- DI 9/14, DII 8/14, DIII 9/14 (TOTAL = 26) 2009- DI 12/14, DII 9/14, DIII 9/14 (TOTAL = 30) 2010- DI 9/14, DII 10/14, DIII 10(or11)/14 (TOTAL = 29 or 30) 2011- DI 8(or9)/14, DII 8/14, DIII 11/14 (TOTAL = 27 or 28) 2012- DI 11/14, DII 10/14, DIII 7(or8)/14 (TOTAL = 28 or 29) 2013- DI 9/14, DII 9/14, DIII 9/14 (TOTAL = 27) 2014- DI 9/14, DII 9/14, DIII 9/14 (TOTAL = 27) 2015- DI 5/14, DII 10/14, DIII 13/14 (TOTAL = 28) 2016- DI 7/14, DII 8/14, DIII 10/14 (TOTAL = 25); note: DI and DII each had one case where projected champ did not make weight at sectional, and the second-ranked kid won the title 2017 – DI 7/14, DII 10/14, DIII 9/14 (TOTAL = 26)

Page 3: Introduction State Tournament Predictions Report of doing ...

2018 – DI 9/14, DII 8/14, DIII 7/14 (TOTAL = 24) 2019 – DI 6/14, DII 8/14, DIII 9(or10)/14 (TOTAL = 23 or 24) 2020 – NO STATE TOURNAMENT OCCURRED Where were the other champs ranked? (note this may not be perfect): 2nd- 121, 3rd- 60, 4th- 23, 5th- 16, 6th- 7, 7th- 3, 8th- 3, 9th- 2, 10th – 2, >10- 4 Each weight class breakdown starts with an ordinal listing of the top 16 wrestlers. Following that ranking, is a listing of the top five (or more) wrestlers at each of the district tournaments; note that four wrestlers at each district tournament site, of which there are four per division, earn state tournament qualification. Due to the non-normal nature of this season, there is going to be no written commentary to go with the ranking structure. In addition to being an attempt to accurately predict the champion (and those towards the top) of each weight class, there are two other primary objectives in the creation of this report: (1) an attempt to accurate gauge the composition of each district tournament weight class (2) to provide fans with a barometer for what might happen over the next few weeks. Please note that this report was researched during the week-long period of February 10th to February 16th. There is a week left of wrestling in the regular season, though it not one in which every team has a competition scheduled. It is also important to note the impact of the JakesWrestling database, without which the rankings process could not be completed. Also, remember that come the state series, it is a new season. The rankings and summaries carry the value of understanding where one person sees things at this point in time, and also an entertainment factor. However, as the writer of this report, I feel it is important to state: (1) there are matches to be wrestled for a reason (2) it is the upsets, the unexpected, and the thrillers that define state series wrestling (3) if I was somewhat perfect, there would be a different line of employment for me (i.e. psychic or bookie). In all the years prior, I would indicate that two predictions are guaranteed to be correct. However, last year showed that even those could be rendered wrong: *The state tournament will be staged on March 13th and 14th at three different high schools in Central Ohio; Hilliard Darby for Division I, Marengo Highland for Division II, and Marion Harding for Division III. *42 wrestlers will be crowned as champions, 14 weight classes across 3 divisions. All others … I can make no guarantees. Best of luck on the remainder of the season, hope you all achieve the levels of success you wish for, and enjoy the reading!

District Tournament Site Analysis Last year (2020) was the first year of the (two-year) enrollment cycle, which will actually go into a third year due to the structural mess that the 2020-21 school year has been across the state. 2020 saw notable changes in district compositions across each division, along with the shift of teams going up and down divisions. Obviously, there is going to be no statistics for state tournament performance across the districts this year. In Division I, the central district lost its fifth sectional, and is back at four sectionals. That sectional shifted to northern Ohio, where it was picked up by the northeast district. This year’s northern composition involves an all-northeast district at North Canton with the mixed district at Perrysburg. Mentor features the sectionals hosted by Euclid, Austintown Fitch, Brecksville, and Wadsworth; while Perrysburg features sectionals hosted by Oregon Clay, Strongsville, Midview (a northeast sectional with a few northwest teams), and St. Edward (which in essence was the “new” sectional). The Central and Southwest district tournaments are self-contained. Division II features a notable composition change for the southern part of the state. The Wilmington district now features three southwest district sectionals and one central district sectional; while the Gallia district features two east sectionals and two southeast sectionals. The structure of the northern district tournaments was unchanged from 2019 to 2020 in terms of there being an all-northeast district (formerly at Alliance, now at Perry (Lake County)) with a mixed district that features three northwest sectionals plus one northeast sectional. However, a critical change from 2020 to 2021 is that teams that fill three of the northeast district sectionals were able to pick between a sectional that fed to Norwalk (hosted by Beachwood) and sectionals feeding to Perry (hosted by Lake Catholic and Painesville Harvey). Three of the top four teams that could have went to Norwalk from this northeast group of teams chose to do so. Akron SVSM, Aurora, and Medina Buckeye are going to Norwalk; Akron SVSM and Aurora previously were in the all-northeast district. This significantly balances the quality between Norwalk and Perry. Things remained mostly the same for Division III in 2020 (and now 2021) as they did back in 2019, though there were slight changes between 2019 and 2020. All northeast district teams will compete in one district tournament; four of the five northwest district sectionals will compete in one district tournament; the southwest district remains featuring three southwest district sectionals and one northwest district sectional, though there will be no southeast district teams feeding into one of the southwest district sectionals this year; while the mixed central/east/southeast district (hosted this year by Coshocton) will feature a southeast district sectional, two east district sectionals, and one central district sectional. That mixed district composition differs from 2019 where there were two central district sectionals, a self-contained east district sectional, and a mixed east/southeast sectional. When looking at the below district tournament statistics, keep in mind that each site should have the following marks from an expected value standpoint: overall record of 105-105, with a 52.5-52.5 mark in championship bracket matches, and 14 wrestlers going two-and-out. Below are four years of records for each district at the state tournament. DIV I - All Northeast (North Canton) 2019: 107-106, 50.2% (overall); 53-55, 49.1% (championship only); 13 (two-and-out) 2018: 108-109, 49.8%; 56-53, 51.4%; 10
