Introduction of new grammar structures in a communicative classroom..
Goals: Share some models of classroom activities to introduce a new
grammar structure, using a communicative-on task approach Create activity easy for students to follow and to comprehend
using L2 Provide with activities to use immediately within a real-life
language context Walk away with valuable ideas to create their own
communicative activities to present new grammar structures based on their students interest and group characteristics
Grammar in the L2 classroom 1) Explicit instruction > grammar rules are clearly defined. “grammar as a goal” Supporters believe that
“making rules explicit is not only beneficial but also imperative in a classroom environment” (Brandl 2008)
2) Implicit instruction > grammar is understood though not directly addressed. Krashen (1982, 1985)
Terrell (1977) “learners can acquire language naturally if they receive sufficient comprehensible input from the teachers”
A middle position: An emphasis of communication
“The question is not if grammar should be taught but rather what and how grammar should be taught” (Van Patten 1988).
Students to be able to use grammar in their real-life language.
In our language classrooms, we want to …
Create situations with a meaningful communicative contexts
Immediately use the new L2 structure.
Easy presentation > comprehend in the L2.
Practice outside of the classroom
