Microelectronics in Mobile Communications

• Radio section (present time)– Direct conversion or low IF– Up and converters circuits – in a single chip– LF functions – in two chips and separate

synthesizer or single CMOS device– Power supply – 3 V

Microelectronics in Mobile Communications

• Radio section (3G terminals)– Multimode and multiband operation– Wideband architectures– Programmable trackable filters– One chip implementation– Active control on power amplifier

Microelectronics in Mobile Communications

• Digital section (present time)– Single CMOS ASIC plus two standard ICs– ICs – SRAM and Flash memory– ASIC – speech coding and decoding,

synchronization, demodulation and etc.

CAD tools, mixed signal and RF methods of analysis

• System level special design tools (for example, AdvanceMS from Mentor)

• SPICE-like simulators for circuit level and mixed signal and RF designers

• Special CAD tools (ADS, SpectreRF, EldoRF, Microwave Office, PSP)

• Special numerical methods or platform methods: Shooting, Harmonic balance, Volterra series

Wireless Design Methodologies

• A lot of standards for personal communications

• Absence a good CAD tools

• Difficulties of using CAD tools

• Difficulties of transfer of specifications from system level to circuit level and implementations

• Absence of a good design methodologies

Wireless Design Methodologies

• Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technique– advances in A/D and D/A conversions (conversion of the

signals close to the antenna)

– growth in using of the DSP and FPGA devices (re-configurable hardware)

• Different frequency bands, different standards, different algorithms of demodulation and digital signal processing can be implemented by loading software into one hardware
