5Enhanced Drilling Introduction & Capability Document
Enhanced Drilling is a provider of specialist drilling technology and services to the international offshore oil and gas industry.
The company’s head office is in Straume (near Bergen), Norway.
Offices and workshops globally include Aberdeen in the UK, Houston in the US, Perth in Australia and Baku, Azerbaijan. There are also
workshop facilities in St John’s, Canada, as well as an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Enhanced Drilling has, for more than 25 years, built an enviable track record and world-class reputation for its innovative offshore drilling technology and services which have been deployed on more than 600 wells. The company’s cornerstone solutions are:
EC-DRILL® - THE SIMPLE SOLUTION TO DRILLING THROUGH NARROW PRESSURE WINDOWS
EC-Drill® is a Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) system based on a Dual Gradient Drilling (DGD) method. It can be used in both shallow and deep wa-ter (including depleted wells), either from a jack-up, platform or a floating drilling vessel.
A long-standing challenge solved EC-Drill® solves a long-standing challenge commonly associated with deep-water wells – drilling through a narrow pore/fracture gradient pressure window. It is a field proven, simple-yet-smart extension of conventional drilling - meaning familiarity for a small project team, with the advantage of a short training period. EC-Drill® does not use a rotating control device (RCD) and utilises the rig’s LP drilling riser and subsea BOP. Its top-side footprint is limited, meaning easy rig integration.
Seamless BHP managementUsing a Subsea Pump Module (SPM) connected to the drilling riser at a specified water depth, the
fluid level inside the drilling riser can be adjusted to change bottom hole pressure.
The system reduces BHP by reducing the riser level in a controlled manner. This way, Equivalent Circulating Density effect (ECD) can be eliminated - invaluable when drilling narrow pressure windows, especially in the reservoir section.
Enhanced safety - early kick/loss detectionAn intrinsic benefit of the system is early kick/loss detection regardless of heave, pitch or roll. The riser level is measured using highly accurate pressure sensors /gauges (+/- 0.1psi relative accuracy), which enables safe operations when the riser mud level is drawn down. The riser then functions as a trip tank.
Operates where back-pressure MPD is not optimalEC-Drill® is also suited for drilling in low pressure environments typically associated with depleted fields, where conventional MPD techniques with back pressure are less suitable.
SIMPLE YET SMART EC-Drill® is a field proven extension of conventional drilling
EC-DRILL® - FLEXIBLY EXPANDING THE DRILLING OPERATING ENVELOPE
A tight Pore Pressure-Fracture Gradient window, normally associated with deep-water or depleted reservoirs, all too often rules out conventional drilling as a viable option. At the very least it can heavily restrict a viable well design.
As can be seen from the Conventional Drilling illustration below, time spent in the pay zone (if this is even possible) is heavily restricted. The result is reduced net pay and reserves.
In some cases conventional MPD may, under the right conditions, offer a slight improvement over conventional drilling. However, EC-Drill® is truly unique in that it intrinsically delivers the benefits of both MPD and DGD.
EC-Drill® is, by design, a simple but smart extension of conventional drilling practice. It is the one system providing the highest level of flexibility and as a result an unequalled, expanded, flexible drilling operating envelope: all with a single mud system and one mud gradient.

7Enhanced Drilling Introduction & Capability Document
The EC-Drill® principle was first used in 2008 in shallow water in Egypt for BP. The first deepwater applications followed offshore Cuba in 2012 for three different operators: Petronas, Petrobras and PDVSA.
In total, EC-Drill® has been used by five major operating companies and has attained Statoil Technology Readiness Level 7-status, the definition of which includes:
PROVEN TECHNOLOGY:• Technology integrated into intended operating system. • The technology has successfully operated with acceptable performance and reliability within the predefined criteria.• Release candidate (RC) version integrated into intended operational environment. • The software has successfully operated with acceptable performance and reliability within the predefined criteria and is ready for mass release.
Additionally, EC-Drill has been cleared for use on both DNV and ABS rigs - BSEE certified for all stages in the well.
The pilot for a new generation EC-Drill® was conducted in 2014 on the Troll Field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. EC-Drill® was used in the drilling of three branches of a well. Drilling of the 8½” section started from the COSL Innovator on 10 March, concluding on 30 April. During this period, 9.5km of sandstone was pumped.
EC-Drill® made it possible for Statoil to minimise losses, while the amount of drilling mud used was reduced by approximately 70 per cent in relation to comparable wells.
Following this pilot, Statoil introduced EC-Drill® to the Gulf of Mexico.
EC-DRILL® ADDRESSES CHALLENGES INCLUDING:
• Drilling Depleted Reservoirs • Gain/Loss Detection• Mud Losses• Control Pressure During Cementing Operations – avoid losses• Limited Horizontal Reach• Drilling Narrow Pore Pressure - Fracture Gradient Windows • Casing, Liner & Completion Running – Mitigates Surge / Swab• Complex casing design• Low Rate Of Penetration (ROP)• Poor Hole Cleaning• Time Associated With MW Changes• Time Consuming Inflow Testing
EC-DRILL® BENEFITS
• Real time control of mud level and therefore Bottom Hole Pressure• Early gain / loss detection• Inflow testing in a fraction of the time of conventional method• ECD management during drilling, running casing and cementing - unique amongst MPD products• Extended reservoir exposure in horizontal wells - further opportunities in the payzone• Reduce mud losses• Improved hole cleaning means both higher flow rates and mud weight• Reduced risk of stuck pipe and formation damage - stay on schedule
HSE BENEFITS
• Early Gain / Loss detection• Mud is the primary well barrier (barrier envelope unchanged)• Always statically overbalanced• Conventional (familiar) well control procedures and drilling methodology• Fail-safe system

RMR® - RISERLESS MUD RECOVERY SYSTEM
Riserless Mud Recovery (RMR®) is a risk-reduction system that allows you to drill a better, more stable top hole safely, quickly and with less environmental impact. The system is an innovative way to return mud and cuttings to the rig before the marine riser is run, without discharge to the seabed: there is no ‘Pump and Dump’.
As of February 2015, RMR® had been used to drill more than 220 wells worldwide.
RMR® BENEFITS INCLUDE:• Primary well control before BOP / riser installed• Check for shallow hazard influx without a pilot hole• Improved hole stability• Deeper surface casing
• Fewer casing strings• Top-hole mud-log data and cuttings• No cement top-up jobs required• Zero discharge at seabed
SAFETY ADVANTAGES OF RMR® INCLUDE:• Primary well control• No gas influx / shallow water flow• Safe identification of gas• Better conductor / Xmas tree stability• Mud volume control in surface hole• Fast gain / loss indication• Real-time visual monitoring of well• No ‘Pump & Dump’• Lower risk of undermining well / template• No ‘smothering’ of seabed by cuttings
STAY ON SCHEDULE WITH RMR®The RMR® system from Enhanced Drilling gives primary well control, weighted mud is in the hole at all times, plus the mud volume is monitored so any gains or mud losses can be seen early.
RMR® improves the quality of the surface-casing cementing job by providing a gauge hole and allowing the monitoring of the cement returns. The result? A more stable wellhead and Xmas Tree.
Using RMR® with mud reduces the risk of undermining the seabed by washing out loose sand and minimises the formation of reactive clays.
The chances of a structure collapse due to undermining the templates are greatly reduced.
Because of the improved stability of the surface hole when RMR® and mud is used, the surface casing may be able to be set deeper. It’s possible that the well
can be drilled with one less casing string.
The RMR® system enables the return of drilling fluid and cuttings from the seabed back to the rig, thereby enabling expensive, engineered fluids to be used as there are no discharges to the sea.
It also enables precise volume control to be implemented on the top holes.
By using the RMR® system, an operator has eliminated a 20” casing, and success-fully set 13 5/8” surface casing down to more than 2,350 meters (7,710ft).
A large number of successful drilling operations all over the world have proven the RMR® technology to be a highly beneficial solution for drilling top holes in difficult downhole conditions, as well as reducing conductor/casing strings.
SAFER, FASTER, CLEANER TOP-HOLE DRILLING RMR® has been used on more than 220 wells worldwide (as of February 2015)

MPC is a risk-reduction tool that enables the successful isolation of high-pressure, unconsolidated water/gas bearing formations with high-performance cement.
The wellbore pressure can be managed in such a way that unwanted fluid exchanges between the wellbore and casing annulus are avoided during circulation of cement slurry and its setting time.
With MPC, precise control over the pressure and return flow is possible to keep the wellbore pressure profile within the drilling pressure window.
A major operator used the system in the Caspian Sea off a semi-sub and was able to meet its top-hole objectives with MPC - previous attempts in the area at controlling gas via conventional cementing technique had resulted in gas leakage after cementing.
This was not the case with MPC. No gas flow either during or after cementing was experienced. The well did not become underbalanced at any time during cement setting.
CHALLENGES SOLVEDMPC is the answer to two major problems encountered with conventional cementing techniques:• Effective cement slurry placement in a Narrow Pressure Window scenario
• Gas flow after cementing.
Other advantages include:
• Enhanced safety thanks to the system’s rapid kick/ loss detection.
• Significant cost and time savings thanks to efficient mitigation of pressure-regime related issues
• Ability to set deeper surface casing
• Superior wellbore integrity
• Reduced logistics requirements
• Simple, effective design and operation
MPC - MANAGED PRESSURE CEMENTING SYSTEM
COMPLEMENTARY TO RMR® SYSTEM MPC provides precise control over the pressure and return flow is possible to keep the wellbore pressure profile within the drilling pressure window
