What is expansion card

Expansion card is a printed circuit board. It is installed in the computer that can add the functionality of the computer. For example we use the graphics card to add more 3D

graphics processing power. Fireware or USB port add fireware or USB expansion card

which provide additional connections. Most cards are installed in the PCI slot. Those are

PCI-X or PCI express. Graphics card may also installed in the AGB slot. Some cards

require open slots. Computer like Apple iMAC or other all in one machine cannot

accept expansion cards. Laptops does not use cards, but some accept removable

PCMCIA cards.

History of Expansion card

The first commercial computer which has expansion slot is the Micral N in the 1973. In tel Z80

based computer running on the CP/M had used industry standard architecture (ISA) bus. IBM MCA bus developed for the PS/2 in the 1987. In the 1997 compaq used ISA bus. In the 1993 Intel launched

PCI bus chip set for the P5 based pentium CPU. PCI introduced as a replacement of the ISA in the 1991.

Types of the Expansion cards

Expansion cards alternatively referred as the

add on card, internal card, interface adapter

and only card. It is an electronic board or

circuit added on to the expansion slot of the

motherboard of the computer. It adds to some ability of the computer. Using this additional

ability a computer can connect to another

computer in a network. Types of Expansion

card.

Interface Card

This card often says as the NIC. An

expansion board you insert in the computer,

so the computer can connect to the network. Most of this designed for the particular

network like protocol and media etc. Some

can able to handle the multiple network.

Types of the Interface cards.

ATA Bluetooth

Firewire

IDE

RAID

SCSI

ATA and Bluetooth

ATA

• It is the AT Attatchment, it is first approved in the may 12 1994. This interface used to connect various devices like hard drives CD ROM drives etc. It is backbone compatible, means new ATA drives apart from SATA use older ATA interfaces.

Bluetooth

• Bluetooth is the RF technology that operates on the 2.4 GHz and it’s range is the 32 meters. It has transfer rate is 1 Mbps. It is used for the computer can able to connect with the cell phone without wire.

Firewire and IDE

It is also referred to as the IEEE 1394. It is

invented by Apple in the 1995. It has also a

bus which has the bandwidth 400-800 Mbps

and the ability to handle the 63 unit on the

same bus. It is also as like as the USB. Like USB it has lot’s of the different devices such

as drives, camera etc.

IDE := It is the integrated drive electronics. It

is also known as the ATA or the parallel ATA and it has the parallel ATA only for IBM

compatible hard disk. It is different from

SCSI because it has controller for each

devices, each devices can directly connect

to the motherboard.

RAID and SCSI

RAID :=It stands for the Redundant Array of

Inexpensive Disk. RAID is connected to the

hard drive and speed up the performance of

the computer storage. It is mainly used in the

server and high performance computer.

SCSI := It is the small computer system

interface. It is the second most commonly

used interface for disk drive. It is capable to

support 8 to 16 devices. SCSI standard for parallel interface, it transfer information at

therate of 8 bit/sec. It also support seven

peripheral devices like CD-ROM, scanner etc.

It is mainly desigen for the Apple MAC but it

also used in the Unix and PC.

Modem

Modem is the modulator and demodulator. First it is released by AT&T in the 1960. It is a hardware device taht used by a computer to

transfer data over telephone lines. It translate the digital data to analog and

vice versa. Modem is called asynchoronous device because it transfer data in a stream of small packet. After receiving the packet

computer retrive the data from packet and reassemble it so that computer can use it. In this communication 1

byte is transferred in a one packet. It also use to connect the computer in

the broadband internet. Ex cable modem, DSL modem.

Network card

It is also called Network interface card. This network adapter is an expansion card that has enable the computer to connect home network.

It uses ethernet cable and RJ-45 connector. These cards are used in the laptop computer those do not have build in wireless network.

These cards found in computers those do not have integrated network on their motherboard.

Page 11: Introduction and types of network expansion card

Sound Card

This card is also referred as sound board or audio card. This expansion card provides the computer is the ability to produce sound through speaker. It is a peripheral card, generally it is not needed but

today almost every computer use it. It is integreted in the slot of the motherboard. Sound cards are also associated with color for unique

identifications.

Page 12: Introduction and types of network expansion card

Video Card

It is alternatively referred as

display adapter, graphics card or

video adapter etc. It is an internal

circuit allow monitor to display

images or video from computer.

These are connected with the

AGP, PCI on the motherboard.

Video card has three connection

on the back side VGA, S-Video

and DVI connector.

Page 13: Introduction and types of network expansion card

Video Capture Card

Those internal or external devices connect from

computer is capable of capturing video signal.

Using this device captured video is converted to the

stored video format. It allows you to store,

modify the video. External video captured device can connect to the computer

using USB port.

Conclusion

From above illustration expansion

cards are kyed, means they will go

to one direction. These cards are

designed for the particular

expansion slots. The back side of

the expansion card also a back

slot that allows computer to plug

into the card and interface with

computer. Apart from these cards

there are also etherent expansion

card like IBM 10GB 4 port

expansion.
