Introduction

In this assignment, we are required to write a REPORT ON SITE VISIT for three modules which is Measurement I, Building Materials and Construction Technology I. The site visit was held on Wednesday, 23rd November 2016. The site is located in Taman Impian Murni (Lot 3607), Jalan Tanjung Balai (Lorong Haji Yusof) seksyen 30, 40460 Shah Alam, Selangor. This site visit was organized by Ms Ang Fuey Ling, Ms Aishah and Ms Azrina.

A few days before the site visit, lecturer informed us to go to the site by ourselves and wear proper attire such as long pants, sport shoes. Therefore, the entire student planned to carpool to the site. During the site visit day, we gathered in campus and went for a breakfast before going to the site. It took us about half hour to reach the destination. When we reached the site, the project manager, Lim Yong, then brief us about the detail of the site. The project manager talks about the kind of construction they are constructing.

This project was a construction of 42 units of houses which consists of double and triple-storey house and the cost for the whole construction costs about RM 1.1 Million. The duration of the construction for this project is about 18 months and it was planned to finish in October 2017.

Objective

To understand the construction process and the usage of construction equipment on site such as excavator, tower crane and etc.

Experiencing the construction process and identify different types of building material on site.

To understand the importance of safety in site and the site condition such as wearing safety helmet.

To increase our personal knowledge about the construction process.

To experience the actual working environment on site such as bad weather like raining and etc.

To witness different type of concrete frame such as beam, column stiffener and etc.

Communicate with the project manager about the site detail.

Observe a real working space and to let us understand easier by looking in a real construction site.

Technical observation

When we arrived to the construction site, I saw there are few temporary accommodations for the workers and a sample house for the clients to see. Furthermore, there are some temporary works and machines in the site. The temporary works are the scaffolding, formworks and etc. Moreover, the construction manager brought us around the site to let us know more about the site. When we entered the site the construction manager told us this project used piling because the soil is soft.

This site visit was a really good experience because we all get to witness all the workers working on the site and we can witness all the concrete structure in front of us. Furthermore, we get to know how they construct all the beam, column and slab.

5

Page 6: Introduction

The foundation used in this construction site is a special foundation because the surrounding soil is too soft. Therefore, they used raft piling foundation which connects directly to the ground beam and there is no pile cap for this foundation. The mesh fabric reinforcement (BRC) and also the reinforcement bar in the slab do not join together with the ground beam. The concrete used in this foundation is Concrete Grade 25. This type of foundation is economical because lesser pile is used.

This picture shows the non-suspended floor slab and the ground beam. This floor slab is on top of the ground beam, this is because the concrete of the floor slab is being poured after the ground beam has been constructed. This special foundation is constructed because the soil is soft and it is to avoid settlement.

Concrete frame structure

Concrete frame is a structure used to resist vertical forces which is gravity and lateral forces which is earthquakes and winds. Concrete frame structures are the most common type of modern building. This type of building consists of a frame of concrete. The horizontal member of this frame is called beams, and vertical members are called columns. While the flat planes of concrete called slabs.

Column (Vertical)

Attached Beam (Horizontal)

Page 8: Introduction

Column is the vertical support compression member that transfers all the loads to the earth independently. A column transmits the load from ceiling/roof slab and beam, including its own weight to the foundation. The main component in column is the reinforcement bar and concrete.

Formwork is the term given to either temporary or permanent molds into which concrete or similar material are poured. In the context of concrete construction, the falsework support the shuttering molds.

A ground beam is tied up at the column end and lying between two column. A ground beam is a reinforced concrete beam for supporting walls and joints.

Isolated beam is not attached to a floor slab, it stands alone. Normally this beam is located on the top which is the roof beam.

Concrete floor slab is common structural element of modern buildings. The horizontal slab is made of reinforced steel concrete.

Attached beam are the beam that attached to the floor slab. Some of the beam is made bigger to replace lintol.

Page 10: Introduction

MaterialThe material used to construct the concrete frame is reinforced concrete grade 25. The reinforcement bar is then tied together to form the column and beam before the concrete is poured on. While the floor slab are made of mesh fabric reinforcement (BRC).

The pictures above shows the reinforcement bar that used to construct the ground beam, column and floor slab in this construction. The main component of making concrete is cement which is used to build the concrete frame structure.

PHOTO AND DESCRIPTION

The pictures show the sand bricks wall on top of the door which cost 20 cent per bricks. Moreover, on top of the door frame is lintol. The function of lintol is to withstand the weight of the brick so that the door frame will not bend. Furthermore, the bond they used in this construction is stretcher bond.

This pictures shows clay brick which is better than the sand bricks because the clay bricks had better fire resistance compared to the sand bricks. They used for the wall that connected to the neighbor because it will slow down the burning speed to their neighbor house.

The construction manager told us about the plumbing system in the house. There are few types of pipes can be found in the house. For example, drainage pipe, cold water pipe, hot water pipe and vent pipe.

There is a drop in the slab to let the water to flow. This is to prevent water from flowing out.

Furthermore, the construction manager told us how they manage the electrical wire and water pipe by hiding all of them inside the wall and floor slab.

As you can see in the pictures, all the wires are covered by the PVC pipe because this is the requirement from the firefighter. The reason why they wanted to cover it is because it can prevent the owner from hacking the wire directly.

This picture show the starter bar which strengthen the concrete and support the column to be more stable.

The reinforcement bar in this picture is used to build staircase that connected to the 2nd floor of the house. They normally build the staircase after they finished building the 2nd floor.

Aluminum roofing is used in this house because it more durable and leak resistance but the drawback is it make lots of noise when its rain.

The picture shows the wall finishes, the right side of the wall is skim while the left side is not skim. Skim is a type of smoothening that smoothen the wall. The left side of the wall is not skim because its kitchen area and the right side is the living room area. Normally the used skim is recommended in bright or critical lighting.

The picture shows that the site is using independent scaffolding. Scaffolding is used temporary to let the worker work in a higher place.

Conclusion

I am grateful that I had a chance to experience a real life construction site because it make me understand more about construction site and I gain more knowledge in the construction field. It’s easier to understand the entire example that lecturer taught us in lecture than experiencing ourselves.

This site visit make me understands some part of the lecturer classes more clearly because there is real life example in front of me. Furthermore, I am able to read the drawing more clearly and identifying all the types of construction drawing. Moreover, the types of material they used in the construction are similar to the lecture I learnt in the classes and now I more understand about all the material. The construction worker has their ways of solving the problem just by gaining the experiencing from the past.

In this site visit, I learnt a lot of stuff and need special thanks to general manager, project manager and construction manager who guide us around and explain the entire construction question to us. Furthermore, they gave us a helmet and goodies bag for free.

In conclusion, I think that the site visit experience is good because we all get to experience the actual working environment on the site. This helped me to understand more about the construction site and to be more careful in the site. I hope there will be more site visit because this will benefit me in the future.
