There is still snow and ice covering the fields in much of the U.S., but the calendar says it’s March, and that means baseball season is right around corner. For volunteer managers and coaches it’s time to dust off the equipment bag and get organized. Today’s Lineup is an app for coaches and managers that can save valuable time and make the game management process a lot faster. Every year tens of thousands of volunteers give their personal time to manage and coach youth baseball. Each may commit 50 hours or more of personal time to coach and manage a team for one season just to their share the love the game. Today’s Lineup is an app that was developed to save time and simplify pre-game management so coaches can keep their focus on the field.

Organizing a game, especially a fair game, can mean hours of prep time. “I was up late, the night before every game, plugging in my lineup and planning my

position players inning by inning in Excel,” says the app’s creator, Joe Bond. “Who missed last game? Who sat out first? Who started in outfield? It was like a big game of baseball Sudoku.” Fair play is important in youth baseball leagues, especially in the early, formative years. Most youth and Little League systems assert that fair play should be the rule not the exception. “You want to give each player enough time to succeed in their best positions, yet rotate players through infield/outfield as your local league rules might suggest. If you’ve got 11 or 12 players you have to equitably plan who is sitting out each inning, strategize your best game and develop players in the process,” says Bond. “And if you coach more than one team, trying to keep it all straight is a job in itself.” He knew there was a better way. No stranger to user Interface design, Bond, knew that game planning would be faster and easier with an intuitive, well-designed mobile app. He searched the app store and didn’t find any existing apps that made the process easier or accomplished what he needed. “I knew I could make a lineup much faster if I could take advantage of the touch screen motion of the iPhone to move players up and down in the lineup.”

His idea became Today’s Lineup; a simple yet elegant baseball lineup generator that also lets you set position players inning by inning. Smartphone and tablet touch screens let you make quick changes in your lineup. You can see the possibilities and focus on game strategy rather than the mechanics of cutting and pasting names. Then you can save and share your lineups as a PDF or compatible excel file for your league, your fellow coaches or your opposing team.
