Commons will also be a place to share
ideas, get news and stay in touch with
the geospatial community in Minnesota
Current situation: many websites
Inefficient• for users: no central browse list; different interfaces and features
• for publishers: maintaining separate sites; sites becoming outdated
Commons will replace
and improve upon these sites
Why another GIS site?!?

Comment on resources
A publisher is an organization that shares their
geospatial resources on the Commons
Publisher requirements
• Publisher should be an organization, not an individual
• Publisher should be the authoritative source for the resources they are
publishing
• Publisher needs to provide documented and organized resources
– Metadata
– Standardized folder structure (Geospatial Data Resource Site)
Be a publisher
Why publish your resources on the Commons?
• More people will find your resources
• More resources will make the site more useful
• You could eliminate your organization’s GIS download page
Please join in!!

*We’re improving the publishing process, and will be
ready for publishers in early 2015 – stay tuned!
The Commons is built on a strong foundation
• Internal Infrastructure – DNR’s GDRS system• ensures the whole system and the data resources in it
will be kept as up-to-date as possible
• Commons website built using CKAN • widely used open source portal software
