Academy of New Media • is a department with 8 part-time working staff-
members, located at the Vice Rectorate for Studies and Teaching
• offers services and initiatives to motivate teachers to use New Media and enhance their competence development
• develops methods, educational strategies and high-quality solutions aiming at continuous innovation in learning
• shares and expands its expertise within the university, with partners and networks
Academy of New Media • Development (models, projects, scenarios,
platforms and services) • Knowledge transfer (consulting, workshops,
guidelines and recommendations) • Events and publications • Cooperation with universities, economy and other
organizations • Awarding the “ELCH” (E-Learning Champion) for
initiatives and projects that particularly support New Media for teaching and learning
MOOC?
• MASSIVE (attending students do not know each other)
• OPEN (freely accessible for everyone, but content is not free)
• ONLINE (accessible every time and everywhere)
• COURSE (structured like lectures)
Austrian MOOC-Platform
• Two universities, one goal • 60.000 € public funding /
150.000 € costs (60.000 € p.a.) • 3.700 registered users (so far) • 10 courses until the end of 2014 • xMOOC (videos, quizzes, forums) • www.imoox.at
Students
• 50% older than 35 years • 71% employed • 57% have a bachelor degree
(at least) • 10% finish the MOOC • 10% want a certificate • 85% are satisfied with the platform
Distinctiveness
• “Education for everybody” as the general theme
• All course materials are offered as Open Educational Resources
• Didactical approach
Open Educational Resources?
• Educational resources that can be freely used and modified
• Using Creative Commons licenses • Business model that suits taxpayers • Avoidance of copyright issues
Findings
• Consistent design and course structure means consistent didactic methods
• Different lecturers means different approaches
• Less personal resources means more smart guidelines
Why did we do it?
• Always trying to be the first • Advertising tool • Support of the life-long-learning-
strategy • Test run for using MOOCs in the
form of regular lectures • Test run for developing promising
MOOC-business models
