Intro. We chose nuclear power because it is a

type of power that we don’t need certain weather.

We also chose nuclear power because it doesn’t release harmful gases into the air.

There is waste but we know how to make nuclear power without creating nuclear waste its just not finished yet.

How nuclear power works. A nuclear power plant is basically a steam

power plant that is fueled by a radioactive element, like uranium or plutonium. The energy that is made when you split the atoms is used to heat water that turns to steam; then the steam travels up a pipe to turn turbines and when the turbines turn it creates electricity. Some nuclear power is generated using Uranium, which is a metal mined in various parts of the world.

Dangers.

Many people are not careful enough so things like this happen and this is why people are scared.

Past meltdowns, Power nuclear rector deaths, mishaps, safety procedure breaches, venting of radioactive gasses, dumping of radioactive water. The danger of terrorism.

Dangers cont.

Though I think people should not say that nuclear power is the bad thing, it is the people that are doing the bad things and making nuclear dangerous.

Cost.

The cost to make a nuclear power plant can go from one billion to five billion dollars, power plants are solid reinforced concrete; some of the walls in power plants can be two or three meters thick.

For people buying power off of the power plants it can be quiet cheap because the fuel is plentiful.

Cost cont.

The cost of power from a nuclear plant is 8.4 U.S cents per Kw-h which is around 11.5 New Zealand cents.

Nuclear power plant.

Around the world we have small villages that we could use a small nuclear reactor from a submarine to power them. This would also be possible in New Zealand because a nuclear submarine reactor would not cost a major amount of money.

New Zealand & Nuclear.

Some people don’t realize we already have some forms of nuclear radiation in New Zealand. Hospitals use a atom of some kind that releases small amounts of radiation that they use to kill cancer.

We need to open our minds to the idea of letting nuclear power into New Zealand.

Many people have commented that bringing nuclear to NZ could start a nuclear war. I don’t think so. The rest of the world has nuclear, they could bomb us using nuclear power if they wanted, it wouldn’t matter if we had nuclear power or not; though if we did they might think twice about bombing us.
