The Crucible

Written in 1953

It is a dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials (same era as The Minister’s Black Veil)

It is based on true events; therefore, a lot of the characters in the play were in fact real people

The play won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1953

The Crucible ProblemsMiller used this play to respond to McCarthyism, when the U.S. government blacklisted accused communists (he thought it was stupid)

As a result, Miller was brought in for questioning by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956

He was convicted of “contempt of Congress” for refusing to identify others present at meetings he had attended
