DOES HISTORY CONFIRM WATER BAPTISM IN JESUS NAME?

BRITANNICA ENCYCLOPEDIA ,11th edition,vol.3,pg. 365 Baptism was changed from the name of Jesus to words Father, Son & Holy Ghost in 2nd Century.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA. Vol 2 page 263 -Here the authors acknowledge that the baptismal formula was changed by their church.

DOES THE ABOVE CONTRADICT MATTHEW 28:19? ____! The word name in this scripture is in the singular denoting one name. That name was Jesus.

Why Should Everyone Be Baptized?

• Because God commanded it

• TO Become the sons of God

• TO HAVE THEIR SINS WASHED AWAY

JOHN 20:28 Thomas said he was his Lord and his God.

John 14:9 Jesus said when you have seen him you have seen the Father. John 10:30 I and my Father are one.

Scripture reveals that we must have the New Birth and that each one of us should know that Jesus is the Christ

WHY I HAVE TO BE BAPTIZED?

Baptism consists of 3 elements

1-Spirit 2-Water 3-The Blood1 John 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water,

and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Fulfillment of John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

• A “burial” or “immersion” in water or Spirit– Rom. 6:3-4 “…therefore we were buried with

Him through baptism into death,…”– John 3:23 “.. And John also was baptizing in

Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit is evidenced by speaking in tongues in every place where a

description is given• They spoke in Tongues when they received the

Holy Ghost• Disciples in Upper Room Acts 2:4 And they were all filled

with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

• Gentiles Acts 10:45-46 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. [46] For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

• Disciples of John the Baptist Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

• Was replaced by baptism instituted by Christ in the great commission

Luke 24:45,47 {45} Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, {47} And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Mark 16:15-16 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. [16] He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Some were re-baptized who had been under the baptism of John – Acts 19:1-5

• Peter – Cornelius – Acts 10:47-48 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, just as we have?

• Phillip – the eunuch – Acts 8:36-38 “And both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water and he baptized him.”

Baptism Must be done in Jesus Name

• Acts 2:38 Peter – on Pentecost “Then Peter said to them ‘Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ…”

• Ananias – to Saul “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”

• Acts 19:4-5 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. [5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

• Col. 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Faith is Essential

• John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

• Acts 8:36-37 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? [37] And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

• Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Why Should Everyone Be Baptized?

• Because God commanded it

• TO HAVE THEIR SINS WASHED AWAY
