------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edition 44 26 October 2016 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Mount Gambier Italo Australian Club InterViews From the President Joe D'Agostino Over the years as a member of the Board I have set-up various folders on the left hand panel of my email inbox, where, apart from the general Club information, I have separate folders for anything to do with Soccer and Bocce. This week I was proud to start a new folder for Basketball. Nathan Koopman not only is a valuable soccer player for Inter but he is proving to be a great Club person. He has taken it upon himself to form an Inter team made up of all senior soccer players and entered it into the local competition. And in a déjà vu kind of way has turned back the clock to days gone by when our predecessor Inter soccer players did the same thing. We congratulate him for an excellent initiative and wish the boys the best of luck for the season. In a classic Inter way I was joined by many other Inter supporters (support apparently rarely seen at the basketball local competition) for their first game and they did us very proud, going down by 3 points only after 3 training runs. Love to see many others go out and support these guys flying the Club flag over the season. I was fortunate enough to attend the Mini-Roos presentation day and it was great to see all the enthusiastic young players proudly representing their Inter teams. The coaches and all involved, including the parents, should be commended on a great year. The Club’s future is in good hands. Unfortunately though, I wasn’t able to make the Club’s presentation night. Well done to all the sport committee and everyone who volunteered their services on that night, it all came together wonderfully and a great night was had by all; supporters and players. Congratulations to all the award recipients on the night but most importantly congratulations to all the teams, their coaches, team managers and all concerned for a very successful year. Don’t forget to give your name to Mr Capriotti to participate in the President’s Bocce Cup next month. Remember this competition is the only one played with open rules so fun will be had by all. The catering has various functions coming up and the Ladies Catering and Bar staff welcome any help you can give so please volunteer some of your valuable time, it will make it easier on everyone. Don’t forget the movie on the 30 th October which will be shown at the Club to raise funds for the Italian Earthquake Appeal, please join us for the movie and afternoon tea. Catch you at the Club. IAC website www.iacmountgambier.com.au (A little reminder that we are working on the website). We are very pleased to have Rob Cevalis and Stephen McRobert who are commencing work on further developing our club website. The Board, Soccer committee and Social committee have all given feedback for Rob on what our website might include and what it could provide to/ for our club and beyond. Stay tuned for details. The social and catering committee has catered for some big events in Sept/October. On the night of the statewide blackout we were getting ready to serve 230 people for Tenison’s Musical Futures. We were in total darkness, working with torches and phone lights, and I am proud to say that our committee members thought quickly, working hard to ensure that the event went ahead the night after, and everyone was happy with the service and food – so not all was lost but it was an experience we wouldn’t want to go through again! This month we have catered for two wakes, whilst it is sad, we were also honored to be chosen by the families to help them celebrate memories of their loved ones.
As we are heading towards the end of the year, there are two events that you cannot miss. On Sunday October 30th at 1:30pm we have an Italian Film (with English subtitles) and a scrumptious afternoon tea for you to enjoy, all for $10. The proceeds from this event will go towards the “Italian Earthquake Appeal”. The board is passionate about this event and hopes that we can raise a reasonable amount of money to go towards helping those in need. Please ring and book or collect a ticket from Teresa on 0417891811, numbers are required to help with catering. The next event is The Presidents Bocce Cup on Sunday November 20th. It will be a great day, come along and have some fun. Just ring Frank Capriotti to play in a team. If I don’t see you before, I will definitely see you all at the AGM on Sunday December 11th at 3pm. If you would like to become a Board Member and help the Club continue its successful journey, please nominate yourself. Regards from

BASKETBALL The idea of “INTER” playing basketball in the
offseason came about quite early on in the year. A
few of the senior players, including myself had
discussed it way back in May. As a group we
began to brainstorm our ideas.
We didn't want to just show up on a Tuesday
night at the local basketball stadium, wearing
some made up team jersey and just have a goof
around. Those interested agreed early on that we
should wear our colours, seek sponsorship and as
soon as our soccer season ends our basketball
training would begin.
I wrote a letter to the sports committee with full
The club following considerable discussion and review has decided reluctantly to cease the annual New Years Eve Dinner /Dance celebrations.
While we are saddened by this decision this however has been necessary due to a number of factors including our aging and reduced traditional member base and the significant cost and effort involved in running this event.
The club regrets this decision however like many other clubs faced with similar challenges this decision was unavoidable and reflects the reality of the current situation we are operating in.
