If so, what are you doing in this field? In some regions, oil palm cultivation has caused and continues to cause deforestation, threating bio-diversity and contributes global warming emissions. For this reason Italmatch Chemicals is committed to replace where possible palm oil with other types of vegetable oil (sunflower, olive, soybean or rapeseed oil) and at the same time obtain Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and Mass Balance certification , the world’s leading certification system for palm oil produced in accordance with principles of sustainability. Health, Safety & Environment are of extreme importance especially for a Chemical Company: can you please give us an overview of your commitment in these fields? Italmatch Chemicals is proud to be a participating member of Responsible Care program, a global, voluntary initiative developed autonomously by the chemical industry for the chemical industry. This program asks chemical industry to improve the environmental, health, safety and security knowledge, minimise waste and reduce risks during chemical transportation and storage. How did you face the challenge of REACH? REACH regulation had a big impact on the entire chemical sector. Instead of seeing this as an obstacle, we have acknowledged that REACH will lead to better levels of safety, fewer accidents, higher productivity and greater competitiveness at a global level. Therefore, we will continue to take all necessary actions to register the relevant substances as stipulated by REACH in order to secure the supply of our products all around the world. How important are R&D and Innovation for Italmatch Chemicals? Our goal is to grow our Personal Care business unit by selling added value to our customers helping them to be successful in their markets. We want to become a reliable Partner more than a Supplier. R&D and Innovation play a key role in this strategy therefore we are investing in it through internal development, external cooperation and also acquisitions that could expand our current technologies or even adding know-how not available in house. What new ingredients are in the pipeline? In the Arese plant we have completed the production trials of two new EO free polyglycerol ester emulsifiers while in our Naples plant trials are on the way to scale up some polyquaternium conditioning polymers. Other interesting development projects are in the field of synthetic rheology polymers and opacifiers. Finally yet importantly, in our Zaragoza plant our R&D is working to expand our oleochemicals portfolio with the addition of some natural esterquats and new emollient esters of vegetal origin looking also at palm oil alternatives. How are you addressing the growing need for sustainable ingredients? We fully support this need: we owe it to the future generations. We already started the procedure to get our Zaragozza and Arese plants RSPO and Mass Balance certified and the plan is to complete it in the first quarter of this year. Many of our products are of natural origin and we are looking at palm oil alternatives for our new developments. In the plants where we produce synthetic polymers we are continuously investing to reduce the energetic consumption and we are developing new biodegradable polymers. INTERVIEW A word with... Eng. DR. RUGGERO SALA, PERSONAL CARE BUSINESS UNIT DIRECTOR Why Italmatch Chemicals has approached the world of Personal Care? After more than 20 years in this industry and having joined Italmatch Chemicals 4 years ago, I discovered some chemistries available within our group coming from past acquisitions such as Akzo Nobel, Undesa, Solutia and largely used by the Personal Care Industry. Based on that and a market search on our competitiveness I prepared and presented to the Board a 3Y Business Plan that has been approved. We then decided to invest into this prestigious market by setting up a new business unit with dedicated resources and full alignment to the Italmatch Chemicals corporate strategy. After an in depth verification on the quality and having tested all the products in the various Skin, Hair and Toiletries applications, we created a new registered brand name Dapracare, with the pay off “Ingredients of choice for Personal Care”, a catalogue and a launch package. Commodities or Specialties? What are your thoughts and plans for the future? In the current portfolio we have both commodities and specialties used as Emollients, Emulsifiers, Biodegradable conditioning agents, Thickeners, Foam Booster & Consistency giving factors, Pearling & Anticaking & Complexing agents. Our plans for the future is twofold: 1) fill our developments pipeline with new products that should become commercial starting from Q2 2017; 2) look for acquisitions and/or alliances that should increase the specialties part and bring in house additional competences to accelerate the needed growth. We are present in 15 countries with 12 manufacturing sites in Italy, Spain, Germany, UK, China, Japan and USA. What are your core strengths? We have a broad product portfolio with more than 15 different chemistries, strong expertise across markets, short time Project Development and close and committed Partnership approach for technical joint developments. How are you organized? We have 5 business units: Flame retarders & Plastics, Lubricants, Water & Oil management, Performance Products and the newly created Personal Care led by Ruggero Sala. Italmatch Chemicals has combined a robust internal R&D programme with acquisitions in order to position itself for profitable growth. 5 R&D centers and a regional sales organization are serving the 2000 customers & partners globally R&D includes both development of new chemical molecules as well as applicative. What are the daily challenges of a Chemical Company of your size and complexity? In the last 10 years, Italmatch Chemicals has grown considerably, from 60 to over 350 million € thanks to internal growth and through acquisitions in Italy and internationally. Integration of the acquired companies is a critical task and the cultural and organizational changes that all the company has to go through are difficult challenges. The reward for our efforts is the large number of exciting opportunities that are opening to us thanks to the global coverage and the technological differentiation of the company and the extensive value growth of the acquired entities.
