Interrelationships

Working together to remove the bad guy

Page 2: Interrelationships Working together to remove the bad guy.

Symbiosis• A close relationship between

two different species

Three kinds of symbiosis1.Mutualism2.Commensalism3.Parasitism

Page 3: Interrelationships Working together to remove the bad guy.

In each of these relationship organisms may provide different benefits.

1. food2. protection 3. cleaning4. transportation5. combination of above

Mutualism

• A close relationship where both organisms benefit

Sharing each others food

Page 5: Interrelationships Working together to remove the bad guy.

Mutualism• The clownfish is protected

from predators by living in the sea anemone. It develops immunity by touching a few tentacles over time and creates a mucus covering and thereby is protected from that particular sea anemone’s stinging cells.

• The sea anemone gets food

by having the clownfish attract predators. The clownfish also removes parasites and keeps water circulating near the sea anemone.

Commensalism

• A close relationship where one organism benefits and the other remains unharmed (does not benefit).

Inviting a hungry guest to share your food

Egret and Cattle

• The cattle scare up small rodents and insects that the egret feed on. The egrets don’t affect the cattle.

Parasitism

•A close relationship where one organism benefits and the other is harmed.

Steals all your food

Page 10: Interrelationships Working together to remove the bad guy.

Parasite• Live on or in other

organisms

• Example: tick

Host• The organism that the

parasite harms

• Example: dog

It would not be wise for a parasite to kill its host or benefit (food) source

What is the niche of a tick?

What is the niche of a tick? • To be a consumer and feed on

the blood of it’s host

Name that Symbiotic Relationship

• Mutualism win/win

• Commensalism win/doesn’t care

• Parasitism win/lose
