Movie/ Clip Summary Bella has just moved to forks and meets the school hottie Edward.Edward (vampire) refuses to kill humans and Bellas blood smells likehow a sizzling T-bone steak would to a homeless man, making it hardfor him to control himself. He can not read her mind like he caneveryone else, which also makes her a complete mystery. He isattracted to her but is worried about sucking her dry and exposing hisfamily. Clip Summary: In the clip, Bella and Edward have their first realconversation together in biology class after Edward has spent the pastweek ignoring her by staying out of school. Acquaintances: People we know by name and talk with when the opportunity arises, but with whom our interactions are limited. You know theresEx: Bella and Eric have known each other no way in hell Im dating youonly for a few weeks, they dont yet right? hang out outside of school and theirinteractions are limited. She is not yetcomfortable enough with him to callhim a friend. 5. Communication Vocabulary2. Turn Taking: alternatingbetween speaking and listeningin a conversation.Ex: Bella asks Edward where he has been for the last weekwhile Edward listens. Small Talk: Message exchanges oninconsequential topics that meet the social needsof participants with low amounts of risk.Ex: In order to try to start up a conversation withBella, Edward asks her how she isenjoying the rain. Asking aboutthe weather is a common way ofstarting a conversation withsomeone you dont know verywell since it doesnt apply to anything personal. 7. Communication Vocabulary4. Probing Question: Question by which weDoes he smellsearch for more information or try to resolve the onion omeletperceived inconsistences in a message.on my breath?Ex: Edward asks Bella why shechose to move to the wettest placein the continental US if she hates thecold and the rain so much. He is tryingto get more information about whyshe made that decision since he cannot read her mind and doesnt understand why she made that choice. Itdoesnt make sense to him. 8. Eye Contact: How and howmuch we look at the people withwhom we are communicating.Ex: There is a tremendous amountof eye contact in Bella and Edwards conversation and throughout theentire movie. (meadow staring scene) Edward is trying very hard tofigure Bella out and he is very attracted to her; he focuses intenselyon her when they are talking with those sweet golden eyes. Mmmmm 9. Self Disclosure: Sharing biographical data, personalideas and feelings with others.Ex: When Edward asks Bella why shedidnt move with her mother andstepfather, she says that he was abaseball player that moved aroundalot; because staying home with hermade her mom unhappy she moved inwith her father. This is personalinformation about herself and her family she has revealed to Edward so hecan understand her better. 10. Communication Vocabulary7. Topic Change: Method by which peopleintroduce new topics into a conversation.Ex: When Bella asks if movingto Forks has made her unhappy,she gets uncomfortable. She thenabruptly changes the topic fromherself to the fact that Edwardseyes have changed color sincethe last time she has seen him from black to gold. This is acompletely different topic from what they were discussing madepossible due to all the eye contact they maintained during theirconversations. (She noticed the difference) 11. Competent or No?I thought the communication between Bella and Edwardwas competent. Remained respectful Attentive to each other Showed genuine interest Asked honest questions and gave honest answersI can relate to Bella and Edward in regard to being hesitantabout talking about yourself. 12. ConclusionScene represents a good example of how most romanticcommunication in relationships begin, with simpleconversation, strong eye contact, and demonstrating sincereinterest.
