Summer 2013Where scholarship meets curiosity, ingenuity and inquiry

Introduction

These internship opportunities are available to students who want to focus on a particular area of interest for approximately four weeks during the summer.

Hands-on learning and access to professionals are at the center of this experience.

A variety of fields of study are available to choose from as students undertake the application process for internships in Science, Humanities, Medicine, the Arts, Public Health and Public Policy.

Marymount will offer a number of internships in several different fields, ranging from Neuroscience to Art Conservation and Animation to Public Policy and Public Health, in sites throughout the Los Angeles area.

Consider using this summer to deepen your knowledge of a field or to learn about something completely new.

The impact on a girl’s future made in high school when she is exposed to a mentor is unparalleled. Girls need to see and be encouraged by leaders and to have experience in “real world” settings as they seek to discover their future. As we say: “Girls have to see it to be it.” It is our pleasure to present to you these opportunities, which will take place at UCLA, a world-class research institution right across the street from us, and at other universities and centers throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Application Process

Identify one or several internship opportunities you are interested in and carefully complete the application form.

Submit application to Ms. McQueen by Monday, March 18, 2013.

Students who are selected as “Finalists” for the program will interview for prospective internships.

Final decisions will be made by or prior to Friday, April 19, 2013.

UCLA Medical School - Department of Neuroscience Multiple Sclerosis Program Mentor: Dr. Rhonda VoskuhlDr. Voskuhl is a widely recognized expert in the study of the immunology of Multiple Sclerosis.

Overview & Requirements: • Lab work with Dr. Voskuhl• Participation in lectures and patient rounds• Exposure to the many facets of medical research • Open to one student

UCLA Cedars-Sinai Medical Center - Department of Neuroscience Multiple Sclerosis Program Mentor: Dr. Nancy L. SicotteDr. Sicotte is MS Program Director & Director of the Neurology Residency Training Program at Cedars-Sinai. She focuses her research on the mechanisms underlying the progression of multiple sclerosis and is the principal investigator on numerous MS clinical trials.

Overview & Requirements: • Work closely in Dr. Sicotte’s lab and conduct patient intake for an ongoing clinical trial• Labwork at Cedars-Sinai• Interest in PRE MED • Five-week internship - mid/late June to mid/late July• Open to one student selected by Dr. Sicotte

Science & Medicine

UCLA Department of Pulmonary and Critical CareMentor: Dr. Chris CooperDr. Cooper is Professor of Medicine and Physiology in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Director of the Clinical Exercise Physiology Laboratory.

Overview & Requirements: • Work in a medical laboratory where studies are being conducted using human subjects in order

to determine the most effective ways to treat pulmonary disease and to address lung function in different environments.

• Work directly with other interns, college and medical students as well as fellows involved with work in Dr. Cooper’s lab at UCLA’s medical school.

• Dates to be agreed upon with Dr. Cooper but are likely to be mid to late June to mid to late July four to five days a week - 25-30 hours per week.

Homeland Security Department of Homeland SecurityOffice of the Mayor of Los AngelesMentor: Eileen DeckerMs. Decker is Deputy Mayor for Homeland Security and Public Safety. She formerly served as a federal prosecutor for 14 years, specializing in terrorism prosecutions as well as an attorney with Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher focusing on business litigation in state and federal courts.

“The Conference is the annual meeting of local Homeland Security and emergency management professionals from the Nation’s largest metropolitan areas. It has become the best attended and most highly anticipated homeland security and emergency management conference of the year as it focuses on all emergency response disciplines at all levels of government.”

Overview & Requirements: • Assisting the National Homeland Security Association with the planning and hosting of the

National Homeland Security Conference that takes place in early June as well as day-to-day operations allowing interns to gain an understanding of the operations of this department as it seeks to address myriad public safety and security issues in the greater Los Angeles area

UCLA Women’s Health Education & Resource CenterMentor: Julie A. Friedman, MPH, CHESMs. Friedman is Director of the Iris Cantor UCLA Women’s Health Education and Resource Center. She is very knowledgeable in the conception, planning, execution and evaluation of evidence-based community initiatives such as women’s health, child development and community health advocacy.

Overview & Requirements:• Work on a project focused on women’s health and the environment • Assist in identifying patient and consumer education materials• Helping to prepare a structured format to get feedback on the materials from members of the

community who come from diverse backgrounds• Assisting in the planning of a fall conference • Dates to be agreed upon with Julie Friedman but are likely to be mid June to late July and

approximately 25 hours per week• Open to rising Juniors and Seniors

Overview & Requirements:• Experience will include daily contact with patients at Clinica Oscar Romero• Shadow doctors and provide direct service and care to patients• Must be fluent in Spanish or have a very strong command of the Spanish language to

communicate with patients and staff at the clinic• A unique internship experience for students interested in medicine and the many challenges

facing health care professionals in large cities such as Los Angeles• Six-week internship• Early to mid June until the end of July (could also be late June to mid August)• Open to one student

Clinica Oscar RomeroMentor: Dr. Maria Ayala“The management, staff, and Board of Clinica Msr. Oscar A. Romero are mission-driven to provide quality health care, health education, and community advocacy on behalf of the underserved men, women and children of Greater Los Angeles. Health care is a human right and Clinica Romero works to ensure access to it for all people regardless of their ability to pay. A majority of the administrative, clinical and counseling staff are from the ethnic communities served by Clinica Romero, which guarantees solidarity of purpose, ability to communicate and empathic care.”

Homeland Security Public Health & Public Policy

UCLA Department of HistoryMentor: Dr. Brenda StevensonDr. Brenda Stevenson has been the Chair of the Department of History at UCLA and currently holds the position of Chair of the Interdepartmental Program in Afro-American Studies at UCLA.

Overview & Requirements:• A summer seminar course with Dr. Stevenson at UCLA with a focus on American History,

specifically an examination of slavery using primary sources• The seminar will include research and research writing• Must be highly motivated and strong in the area of history and research • Mid June - late July• Open to two students

The Getty Conservation InstituteMentor: Ms. Susan Macdonald, GCI Field Projects Head

“The Getty Conservation Institute works to advance conservation practice in the visual arts, broadly interpreted to include objects, collections, architecture, and sites. It serves the conservtion community through scientific research, education and training, model field projects, and the broad dissemination of the results of both its own work and the work of others in the field. In all its endeavors, the Conservation Institute focuses on the creation and dissemination of knowledge that will benefit the professionals and organizations responsible for the conservation of the world’s cultural heritage.”

Overview & Requirements:• Experience work with Ms. Macdonald, the GCI Field Projects Head• Develop a project and/or area of focus based on the work that the Institute does and the

student’s interests relative to this work• Four-week internship• Open to two students

Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television, Animation DepartmentMentor: José Garcia-Moreno, Animation Department ChairMr. Garcia-Moreno is the Chair of the Department of Animation for Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television. As a recipient of both a Fulbright Scholarship and a MacArthur Foundation Grant, he has created award-winning works recognized in the most important film festivals in the world.

Overview & Requirements:• The opportunity to participate in an animation workshop working directly with

José Garcia-Moreno • Learn the fundamentals of film animation including the creation of an animated short film• Basic knowledge of the “animation thinking” process• Mastery of the process applied to the production of a series of different storyboard projects• Use of the notions of character, setting and plot• Conceptualization of composition, camera shots and angles• Learn how to convey visual ideas in an aesthetically pleasing manner• Workshop held June 17 to July 12, three days a week, four hours a day• Open to ten students

UCLA Nano Science Camp The California Nano Science Institute (CNSI)

An exclusive summer workshop for high school students who would like to further their knowledge in advance science and technology.

The five-day program will include hands-on experiments developed by UCLA graduate and postdoctoral researchers. Student activities include lectures, scientific instrumentation training and science career mentorship along the unique opportunity to “explore science inquiries similar to those investigated by UCLA scientists in ongoing research projects and to perform experiments using vigorous scientific methodology and techniques.”

UCLA Neuroscience Camp

The summer program is an instructional course for introducing basic neuroscience and related experiments, techniques, and analytical tools.

Open to three selected high school students, ages 16 years or older, for a one-week internship.

The Marymount High School Internship Program was established to provide outstanding high school students with opportunities to work closely with academic, medical and arts-related professionals over approximately four weeks during the summer. Theseinternships will provide an opportunity for students to engage in hands-on learning in a variety of settings.

To be eligible to apply for the program, students must be sixteen years of age (as of June 13, 2013) and a rising 11th or 12th grader at Marymount High School although some opportunites are available to rising 10th graders. See brochure for details.
