Hawkins Foundation • The Hawkins Foundation is a not-for-profit organization
whose purpose is to advance orthopaedic medicine and outcomes for patients through research and education.
• Working alongside the physicians of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas, the Hawkins Foundation provides a unique set of resources and infrastructure for education and research in the world of orthopaedics.
• The foundation partners with Proaxis Therapy, Greenville Health System, Clemson University, The University of South Carolina, Furman University and other individuals that contribute to the collaborative efforts to define value in orthopaedic medicine.
Differences • The Hawkins Foundation is an accredited CME

Hawkins Foundation Surgical Innovation Lab
• The innovation lab is a 5,000 Sq. Ft. Surgical Cadaveric Laboratory.
• It provides the prefect environment for orthopaedic research.
• Device companies can build models, test equipment and collaborate with surgeons and scientists who work on the same floor.
• Clemson University is one of the nation’s leading research institutions in medical device technology, has constructed biomedical labs, regenerative tissue labs, and supporting infrastructure to conduct ground breaking research with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas orthopaedic practice.
Education and Events
I was given the opportunity to intern with the Director of Education and Events, Mrs. Cecilia Hanna. By working with Mrs. Hanna, I was able to learn the necessary skills to assist with the Sports Medicine Fellows Program.
Workspace• My workspace at the
Hawkins Foundation was located next to the administrative assistant’s office-Mrs. Tina, Dr. Hawkins office, Mr. Hoyle and Mr. Hyman’s office.
• Down the hall were the offices of Mrs. Hanna and Dr. Tokish.
• By being located near everyone, I was able to experience and hear about all of the things going on throughout the clinic, as well as, the Hawkins Foundation.
Day to Day ActivitiesMy day-to-day activities varied in different tasks due to the role of Mrs. Hanna. Some of the tasks that I would be in charge of
are:
• Attending regular scheduled sessions (RSS) for continuing medical education hours (CME)
• Organizing the Hawkins Society database• Create RSS evaluation summaries• Create certificates• Create file folders and labels• Scan and copy documents• Document expense reports
Projects (examples on following slides)
The Hawkins Society Survey was my main project for my internship. The goal of the project was to identify each society member’s organization as a public or private practice. To gather all of the information, I had to research each society member’s company website, as well as, email or call the member to confirm whether they were a public or private practice. Another project I was in charge of was to create the event calendar for the month of June. The calendar would normally be filled with events such as journal club, where different organizations could “sponsor/host” the event where the fellows learn about different surgical procedures. This also included lab and academic learning sessions, where the fellows go in and discuss the surgeries, as well as, watch videos on the procedure. I was fortunate to attend a few of the Fellows Lab sessions, where they would get to practice what they had learned in the bioskills lab. The procedures were done on frozen cadavers so the fellows would be able to be invasive and learn from the practice. After the lab sessions were over, the fellows were to do an evaluation on how the lab went. One of my duties was to create an evaluation summary of all their lab evaluations from the lab sessions.

The CME hour spreadsheet is an Excel file that I needed to update each week to make sure that each doctor met their required hours in order to receive their certificate of completion when it came time to renew their license. Throughout my internship, there were different events that had occurred to where certificates needed to be created for the attendees. My duty to this involved creating the right certificate for the event with the correct hours that were met by each doctor and have them emailed to each specific doctor. My final project for the Hawkins Foundation was the Hail and Farewell Event. The event is to say farewell to the fellows from the following year and welcome in the new fellows that would be joining the society in August. My duties for the event were to schedule tee times for all the doctors on the morning of June 23rd, organize their luncheon after the round, then plan the dinner event that following evening, which included having to call Event Rentals to deliver all the supplies needed for the dinner. Also creating the invitation list, where we need to identify all the doctors that would be coming, as well as, their medical assistants that have helped them through the years.

ConclusionMy experience at the Hawkins
Foundation has been tremendous. By working with Mrs. Hanna, I have learned that there are many roles in a healthcare
organization. Many of which that I believe are opportunities I would love to pursue upon graduation in the following
of Spring 2017.
