Abstract

IoT consists of networks of sensors attached to objects andcommunication devices providing data that can be analyzedand used to initiate automated actionsIoT came into existence because, without human interactioncomputers were able to access data from objects and devices, but it was aimed to complement the human entered data as alimiting factor, and to achieve cost, accuracy and generalityfactors.WSN is a key enabler for IoT paradigm. Our aim is to monitoran underground drainage and manhole monitoring system(UDMS).The vital considerations of this design are low cost, lowmaintenance, fast deployment, and high number of sensors, long life-time and high quality of service. The proposed model provides a system of monitoring thewater level and atmospheric temperature and pressure inside amanhole and to check whether a manhole lid is open. It alsomonitors underground installed electric power lines.UDMS can remotely monitor current states of the manholes inreal time.

Introduction

About 20 years ago, the internet was just used for simplyfinding/searching the information. But now over the last 10years the internet has become very social, transactional andmobile. The term IoT was coined by professors of MIT. According toCISCO, Internet of Things consists of networks of sensorsattached to objects and communication devices providing datathat can be analyzed and used to initiate automated actions.According to chief general of Microsoft IoT means into theweb sensors, machines, devices in the cloud how they able towork together to deliver new services.According to CISCO Future Internet is the IoT. IoT isconnection of virtual world with the physical world i.e.connecting physical devices with the internet.RFID provides strong support for this IoT.(RFID technologiesand related identification technologies are the corner stones ofthe IoT. Related ID technologies means bar codes, NFCs etc)

M2M technologies also allows wireless and wired systems tocommunicate with other devices of the same type. Biggestbreakthrough of this IoT is making the physical world andinformation world together.

Here sensors play a vital role to bridge the gap betweenphysical world and information world.

The most of the cities adopted the underground drainagesystem and it should be in proper manner to maintain thecleanliness of cities. If the drainage maintenance is not properthe pure water gets contaminate with drainage water andinfectious diseases may get spread.

The drainage gets blocked during rainy season, it will createproblem for routine life. The traffic may get jammed, theenvironment becomes dirty, and totally it upsets the public.

So it is the duty of corporation to take care of cleanliness ofthe city. They should take special care about drainage system.

Page 10: Internet of Things for Underground Drainage and manhole Monitoring System for Metropolitan Cities

It is very common that drainage will get blocked due to somereasons. But the corporation official responds to this problemvery late. After getting blocked the public will notice this, butsome-times the public also careless and they dont inform theofficials.

After creation of some serious problem through public or someother Medias the news will go to officials and they respond toit thereafter. Until then the whole public of thatcorresponding area has to suffer.

Suppose if there should be a facility which would be there inMunicipal Corporation that the officials come to knowimmediately after blocking of drainage in which area and theexact place where it is blocked and it also informs if themanhole lid is open.

The time will be saved. The action can be taken quickly andman power will be saved.

So our main focus is monitoring manholes using sensors. Ifdrainage gets blocked and water overflows, it sensed by thesensor, then that sensor sends information via transmitter andthat signal is received by a particular receiver which is near tocorporation or corresponding offices.

Motivation

If the drainage maintenance is not proper the pure water getscontaminate with drainage water and infectious diseases mayget spread., it will create problem for routine life. The traffic may getjammed, the environment becomes dirty, and totally it upsetsthe publicIf the manhole lid is not closed properly there is a chance ofoccurrence of accidents and also people or animals may getfall into the drainage. This problem is very interesting, suppose imagine if we shouldhave a remote monitoring system to monitor the internalstates of the manhole, and then we can solve this problemefficientlyThese problems occur due to environmental changes like rainyseason etc. There are many other remote monitoring systems,[refer] they have adopted WSN to remotely monitor theconditions[refer crop monitoring journal patent].We can improve this problem by designing WSN platform IoTapplications.

Objective and Scope

The main objective of this project to keep the city clean, safety and healthy.

If the drainage maintenance is not proper it will createproblem for routine life, traffic may get jammed infectiousdiseases may get spread and there is a chance of occurrence ofaccidents.

The vital considerations of this design are low cost, lowmaintenance, fast deployment, and high number of sensors, long life-time and high quality of service.

Design

To overcome the problem of open drainage system, most ofthe cities were adopted the underground drainage system tokeep the city clean, safety and healthy.

This is a design of WSN platform for UDMS for IoTapplications.

Previous [patent] system fails to provide low cost, lowmaintenance, fast deployment, and high number of sensors, long life-time and high quality of service.

This design provides three way alert systems, which includeRoute map, LCD display and Speakers.

Conclusion

WSNs are considered as the key enablers for the IoT paradigm. However, due to the widening variety of applications, it isincreasingly difficult to define common requirements for the WSNnodes and platforms.

This model addresses all phases of the practical development of afull custom WSN platform for underground drainage and manholemonitoring system through IoT applications for metropolitan cities.

A real-life, demanding application is selected as reference to guidemost of node and platform solution exploration and theimplementation decisions.
