• Kiran Balagani, Ph.D., is principal investigator on a project called “Investigating Cognitive Rhythms as a New Modality for Continuous Authentication,” which will be funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA).

• Xiaohui (Sean) Cui, Ph.D., has been granted two multi-year awards by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Breakthroughs in Validating Identities

Dr. Balagani, along with co-principal investigators Vir Phoha, Ph.D., of Louisiana Tech University, and Andrew Rosenberg, Ph.D., of The City University of New York (Queens College), will work with eight student researchers to develop a novel cognition-centric paradigm for continuously validating the identities of computer users.

Detecting Pandemic Diseases

• Dr. Cui is leading the “Bio-threat Web 2.0 Data Retrieval and Analytics” research as principal investigator; the grant will support NYIT faculty and students in developing a novel intelligent surveillance tool for pandemic disease detection by harnessing social media.

• Dr. Cui is also leading the Department of Defense research project at NYIT titled, “Exploring Verification and Validation Approaches for Agent-Based Disease Spread Models,” designed to study how factors like population, location, and transportation models impact disease spread.
